Edited by: Tania Russ on 25/02/2008 16:57:28 Edited by: Tania Russ on 25/02/2008 16:56:09 High sec kamikaze style piracy has become a real problem for those of us who actually build stuff and accomplish something worthwhile in Eve, as opposed to pirates, who basically don't accomplish anything but stealing other people's stuff.
Basically, this is how it works: a pirate or two or twenty attacks you, in your freighter and thinking you're safe because of all the Concord ships about, and blow you up. You find yourself in a pod, staring at two or more other pirate people likewise in pods. By the time you get back to your wreck in another hastily bought freighter, their buddies have looted all the wrecks and all your hard-earned stuff is gone. This really sucks.
Here is a fun way to combat these sorts of shenanigans, and the best part is, even a noob can do it.
Buy a frigate with a high scan resolution, like say the Gallente Atron. Fit it out with two rail guns, two scan boosters, and perhaps a low fitting power core or something to boost ship power output a bit if necessary. Total fitting cost? About a million, if that. Get cheap scanner scripts as well.
Here's the interesting part. Fitted suchly, and with decent signature analysis skill level, you can lock a pod in about 1.5 seconds. So, the plan is this: you wait until one of your fellow hapless builders is being brutalized as outlined above. You quickly lock the pod of one or more pirates and fire before they can warp away from the scene of the carnage. The sad part is, the Concord idiots will pop your little Atron for handing out this justice, (they're the "lawmen", they should be protecting commerce, they don't, they suck, but anyways) but as long as you're quick on the draw you can get away in your little pod before anyone can think to get revenge on you in return. Total cost for you? Like I said, around a million. No sweat.
As implants are ridiculously expensive, and really so are clones for higher end pirate players, the cost of replacing said goodies on the part of the pirates will be high, which may cause them to rethink their evil ways. In any event it will cause them shame, pain and chagrin, which would be the basic object! :) Total cost for pirates: maybe around $100 mill or more depending where they got their implants and what type.
So go to it fellow people who hate pirates! And have fun. I want to see lots of pirate corpses floating about high sec trade lanes.

Edited by: Tania Russ on 25/02/2008 17:16:34 Well I think they are bascially operating with impunity in high sec ganking situations like this, which would mean most of them are actually using their implants, why not? Who is podding them so far? But likely, you're right, they would have to stop using implants for these ops after a while if this sort of thing caught on. Oh well. I'd still keep doing it just for the fun and satisfaction of it all. :)

You *could* cost the pirates a couple of mill for a new clone, but if you really want to grief them, don't pop the pods, POP THE WRECKS!
Pop the freighter wreck and the pirates will make nothing for their trouble. THAT is the way to discourage them.
CONCORD provide consequences, not safety; only you can do that. |

To the OP - when you finally convince your friend to reduce his standing significantly by popping my pod (so much so, that after a few podkillings, he/she is no longer allowed back into hisec) I will tip my hat to you...
...for showing the noob that you are. I don't pirate in implants, and spending any amount ISK for a rejuvenated clone is peanuts. That, coupled with the many millions of ISK in items from your torn shell of an autopiloted ship (which I scanned before the endeavour, by the way) makes me smile, so very much.

I once lost a pod when I hadn't updated it. I lost frigates 5, and ended up with frigate 4 at 98%, took me all of 4 hours to get it back.

If freighter pilots would stop being newbs, flying solo on autopilot through high traffic zones, this wouldn't be an issue.
If you are sitting there in a ship, watching all this...why didn't you just act the scout to begin with and save him instead of popping pods....besides, as others have suggested...pop the wreck, the pilot isn't going to get it as any good bomb camp has a freighter in the wings and popping a couple pirates isn't going to stop it from jumping in to get the loot. Pop the wreck and all their effort is wasted...and you don't take a major sec risk...not to mention, the hauler pilot might thank you for at least keeping the pirates from making a profit off their stupidity. Soooo, tell me something. Who would you sell all that stuff that you build to if there weren't someone out there to destroy the stuff people already have? The pirates and PvPers actually ENABLE you to do what you do and without them you'd quickly be up to your ears in stock that nobody needs.

Edited by: isdisco3 on 25/02/2008 19:00:53 Having read the OP, I have suddenly found my chosen profession in eve to be pointless, without meaning or merit, and completely unfulfilling in every possible aspect. I have led a shameful, wasted eve career wherein by leeching off of other, nicer players, I have ruined countless happy mining expeditions, numberless missioners simply trying to pop that last annoying NPC battlecruiser, and have scared many a ratting bs into either ejection or explosion. This is going to change.
From here on out, I promise to do nothing other than help other people. I promise to fit all my battleships with miner ii's and go mine veldspar, perhaps even assisting other fellow miners with their work. I promise to inform everyone in local of the entrance of mean piwates or can flippers, and I promise to petition endlessly for making highsec completely safe in every possible regard by banning all offensive weapons of any kind in those areas.
Just kidding
That said, scheming to pop the pods of people who highsec gank you is quite awesome imo. If you can't prevent the gank (which you can, by the way), you might as well make them pay.

Another fun thing for your ALT to do while waiting around in highsec for fit to hit the shan would be simply to broadcast the locations of anything that looks like a gatecamp on local. Make yourself as annoying as possible for the pirates. Good times. :)

And as regards security risks, pshaw. Obviously you're not using your main for something like this. Make your noob alt a fighter who can handle an Atron from the start, get him out there podding, when his sec drops, terminate him and start over. Simple. :)

THe ultimate, and hilarious, thing that could come from all this would be the hypothetical conversations going on between the pirates. "Ok here he comes..." "Crap! THere's an Atron here!" "I'm not in a JC guys! Abort! Abort!"

I think it's kind of a failure on the part of the game mechanics that people who are industrial in nature would have to resort to something like this to get a little of their own in. Let's face it, what can someone do? Join the pirates and pick on other people? That would give me little satisfaction, in fact I'd just be disgusted with myself in the same way I'm disgusted with the bullies who pick on others and take their crap. There will always be war in lowsec, which is the main source of sales and which drives the economy, not highsec piracy, good grief (somebody said without pirates we'd have no-one to sell to, which is crap) and I have no problem with that. The fact is there's no way other than shenanigans like this to get a little satisfaction against idiots who play just to grief others. We've been doing it for a bit, it's fun. I wanted to encourage others to do it too. I can understand why pirates wuldn't like it, of course. Sorry, you're gonna get podded occasionally. (Sniff, sniff) Here's a tissue. There, there.
