I have a theory, try not to look surprised. Maybe you notice these things, maybe not. Here it is..
Presently, you've got groups like TRI and GS ganking people in empire. No, do not complain.
GS is hitting Exhumer pilots with can flagging, and TRI is suiciding into pimped out Caldari Navy Ravens. On its own, there is not much to talk about. This stuff happens every day.
Two large alliances doing it at the same time is suspicious. When you factor in recent events, you get a possible reasoning for it.
Recruitment.
If you're an experienced PVPer considering a change, looking for groups that do PVP isn't exactly narrowing things down. Rational people will go where they think they'll have the greatest fun. Most of the time, this means going to the alliance that enjoys ****ing others off.
BoB, MC, Ev0ke, KIA and Outbreak became popular choices because they fought with everyone, everywhere. TRI is a popular choice for going against the plans of others, and burning many allied bridges. GoonSwarm has its own language for describing how incredibly easy going they are. RA is up there because they only show up when there's big stuff to kill, and the whole russians = vodka = drunk = comedy stereotype.
The part that explains the empire ganking, is the situation with Tortugans and BoB.
With the Tortugans, many of the alternative choices to BoB disappeared when they got involved in exactly the same kind of warfare. As a result of alienating their core principles and sacrificing some independence, each group suffered internal casualties. In the end it was not as fun as they had imagined. Now they've split ways again, reverting to their previous course of flying around killing stuff wherever they want. How much credibility they get for advertising their 'no politics, no bs' stance is going to stay questionable for a while.
As for the second reason.. When it comes to recruitment today, joining BoB ensures all your PVP desires come true. However, them being backed into a corner makes you consider the increased risks of internal drama and other nasty tension. Even if it never manifests, people looking to join feel like they're gambling somehow.
But when it became apparent the BoB NOL defense was very enthusiastic and GoonSwarm activity is on a downspin, it prompted a reaction by GS. TRI members must of felt it was some kind of preemptive move to poach players leaving the other groups, by asserting themselves as "the most fun alliance ever" through empire ganks.
Whether or not this war ends soon, people feel like it might/should. Alliances are noticing this, and being very opportunistic about it. An important part of the war now is seeing who can poach members the best. It could have just as much impact on bringing it to an end as all the ships killed ever did.
And like I said, it's just a theory. This is how I've interpreted current events, and there is no real evidence to prove it one way or the other. I'm just very amused that for once, the casualties are actually innocent.
Damn carebears. _______________________________ http://epicwords.net/ |

Oh, I know it's not new. The theory is to explain the recent empire ganks, and nothing more.
Only difference now is you're trying extra hard to be chill. _______________________________ http://epicwords.net/ |

I don't need cheerleaders or sidekicks when it comes to CAOD. Just say you agree, or go die in a fire. It's really that simple.

Nowhere, because Syndicate is irrelevant as hell even when I'm there :| _______________________________ http://epicwords.net/ |

All I did was try to explain some current events with TRI and GS. If you really want to generalize:
- all major alliances care about their image - all major alliances will attention *****
Ganking in empire is just one way to keep your alliance on people's minds. I never implied empire ganking would attract hardcore pvpers on its own, this is like a tiebreaker more than anything when you're trying to chose between two pvp-heavy groups.
It isn't a master plan either, and there are other better examples. Most people are consciously aware of stuff that'll get their alliance some public attention.
CAOD is a better example, because you don't get kills or money for posting. There's also a good chance it'll aggravate you if you actually spend time reading, so it's not even a fun place to be sometimes.
For all the career ****posters in GoonSwarm..
- most of them wouldn't be doing it on their own, or come to CAOD at all - some of them go straight to reply, and never visit the thread again - a few are sharing threads and tag teaming
Unless these incredibly funny people are getting paid to waste their time every day, they're tryin' to represent. Cause most of their recruits are pubbies who join SA for GS.

I would believe individuals.
But I don't believe for one second, that two big alliances are completely indifferent to the drama and attention they'd get from empire ganks.
Doing it at the same time, roleplaying it, advertising it on a website... "You're stupid its for fun!", "NO WAY ITS ALL ABOUT THE ISK!". Yeah, even if you like the smell of your own farts, that's still crap you're smelling.
If someone is actually stupid enough to get angry over my theory, it's because I didn't imply their e-confidence and e-morale was shattered. That would've been so much easier to troll than "you care what others think", and "you're trying hard to impress".
It's not really a secret, but alliance people always try to hide it. Every established group has twirled for the public at some point, and at least recruitment is one of the better reasons.
What is so bad about admitting you'd like to wear makeup, put on a dress, dance for others, and be loved? Seriously. _______________________________ http://epicwords.net/ |
