OK so I've just moved my mission character away from where I was doing missions. A *long* way away. Then realised I had an important mission offer that I forgot about.
I haven't accepted the mission, it's still just sat there unaccepted in my journal. It's a crappy mission with a crappy reward and I really can't be bothered to travel 29 jumps to do it just for the standings.
If I just let it expire will I lose standings?
Thanks for any info :) ________________________________________________________________

if the mission is not accepted, then it will expire without any negative effect on you standing. does not matter if storyline, important storyline or regular mission.

Incorrect. If you have offered mission you have 7 days to either accept it and complete it or decline it. If you ask for mission, but do not accept or decline it you will still get standings hit if it expires.

Yes you will lose faction standing and you will lose more than you would gain by completing it, so it's your call if faction standing is important.

Hmm OK, I didn't ASK for the mission, the agent mailed me saying they had a mission for me. That's all. I haven't spoken to that agent, I haven't even been to their system!
You sure I'll get a standings hit if I just ignore the mail? Seems a little messed up if that's the case :( ________________________________________________________________

Yes you will. It has been offered to you so you will either travel to the agent and tell him to stuff it or travel to the agent and complete it. Anything you can see in mission journal has timer with it.

Yesterday, a "Shipyard Theft" level 4 mission expired for me. I feared to loose faction standing, but totally forgot to decline the mission. It was a great relief, when I checked my standings. No losses with the Minmatar Security Services (the agent's corp), the Minmatar Republic (the corp's faction) or any other corp or faction. I didn't check if it changed the standing with that specific agent.
It seems that you don't loose any faction or corp standing, when you just ignore storyline missions. Just don't accept them and let them expire afterwards.

In my mission running career, I have let about 100 special mission agent offers expire, with no standings loss, as long as you don't speak to the agent you won't lose standings..
Was Blood Raider, Sansha, Amarr , And Gallente missions
On the other hand, normal agents, if you do not decline it before offer expires you WILL lose standings.
And once you accept a mission, if you don't complete it in time you lose a lot of standings if time runs out, but about half if you quite. (say you lost cargo due to gank etc)

I accidentally let 4 unaccepted storylines expire last Wednesday and my Caldari State standing remained unaffected, at a stately 9.92 so I might have some idea what I'm talking about.

I am doing mission with Carthum to be able to use R&D agents. I am not interested in Amarr standing. I already let 4 or 5 different storylines (normal and important ones) expire and I got NO (zero, nill) standing loss either with Carthum or Amarr empire.

*sigh*
It's NOT a Caldari problem because it's NOT a problem.
This is for Storyline missions only. If you totally ignore the offer, after seven days it will time out and you'll get a snotty evemail from the agent but you do NOT lose any standings for simply not accepting a Storyline mission.
My Caldari storyline agent gave me that silly 40,000m3 mission to low sec last week, I just ignored it and now it's gone away with no loss in standings.

On those regular multi-part missions where u automatically get the offer of the next part after completing the prior part--don't let those expire or u will get standing loss.. U must reject instead...U can however, ignore R&D agent mission offers with impunity.

You can refuse 1 Storyline mission every 24 hours, with no ill effects (letting it expire gives standing loss, but not as much as failing a mission) ---

This
As long as it is not accepted, before it expired, there is not faction loss.
