Yo, I've been using a normal jet can, but I don't like how frequently I have to haul, as I've only been playing for a week, and they disappear after like a hour so I was wondering if I buy a secure normal container, can I dump it in the belt with my hauler, then mine till it's full, then do a normal hauling trip or two? Or does this method not work.

A giant secure container (GSC) currently lasts forever. At least if it is anchored.
But since a GSC is only 3900 m3, while a jet can is 27500 m3 you would probably found that you will have to haul even more often.
If the only reason you are hauling from the jet can is the one hour limit, remember that you can easily eject a new jet can and move everything into that. The new jet can will then last for another hour.
PS: Let us skip the whole "jet cans lasts for X hours"-debate

Things are about to change for secure / anchored containers as mentioned in a recent dev blog...

This makes me so happy. So very happy:
Anchorable containers will from now on have a 30 day lifetime from last usage. This means that once you anchor a container it will gain an "Expires In:" attribute. If this container enters downtime with 0 days left it will be removed from space. Last usage is either when it was last anchored or opened. This means that as long as you take care of your space cache every month, it will be safe. However, if you leave an unanchored container it will be removed immediately the next down time. The same exception applies to anchorable containers as to generic junk (see below).
There are some belts where there is virtually no room whatsoever to lay down my own GSC, due to the scores upon scores of abandoned GSCs that are cluttering up space. I can't wait for this problem to end...along with those advertisements for corps that have been defunct for eons.

A normal jetcan works for 2 hours, to the second. A secure can (less space, can only anchor without anything else within 5k), lasts for as long as you have it anchored in .7 space or lower (you can launch it in above space, but cannot anchor...so it disappears at DT.

It would be nice to get some stats of CCP of the number of containers cleared up in the first sweep when this is implemented.
wk.
ps. Now if I can just remember where I anchored that can with the Ragnarok blueprint in, I'll be ok!

So do people actually do that - anchor cans full of stuff in the middle of nowhere as a secret stash? Why not just leave it in a station - or is this people in lowsec who haven't got stations/POS anywhere accesible?

It's mainly used in 0.0 where there are few stations and stations may get camped for long periods.
