My advice is to do both Mining and Missions. If you are new to the game, this will take a long time to train but it is worth it because if you only do one, you will get bored of it very quickly. If you train both, you can switch. Sometimes you will want to watch tv and be semi-afk. You can do that while mining. Even if it is just in a Retriever which doesn't take long to train for.
As far as being profitable. Yeah it can be but i think lvl 4's are a faster money maker. Especially if you loot and Salvage.

Originally by: Maximada theres a million better ways in eve to make isk other than mining, i highly recomend against it.
ask yourself......
is it worth it? is it enjoyable? how can i increase my profits?
Industry in eve as a whole sucks and badly needs a complete rework. Never going to happen though. Is mining profitable? It turns time into isk with little overhead, so arguably yes, but it's probably the most boring and risky way to do it.

How are you defining profitable?
If you are meaning isk per hour that you can make, mining might not be the most profitable thing you can do in the game when comparing isk over time. The most profitable isk vs time that I've ever heard of is scamming. But that takes creativity, luck, and trashing your reputation.
The next most profitable thing I'm aware of would be playing the Jita buy and sell game.
Piracy and suicide gankings can also be highly lucerative but it's purely luck, based upon opportunity and skill.
Mining, Ratting, Mission running, are all Eve's version of Blue collar jobs that give you a garanteed salary vs your time put into it.
The oportunities mentioned above would be like your CEO's. They're the creative bussiness owners that put it all on the line and can get supper rich or go bust.
So unless your actions are costing you isk, anything you do in game is profitable.

Mining is still okay as long as you produce with the minerals. Mining would be better if so many of the idiots out there didn't abide by the following maxim:
"If I mine it myself, it's free. I also happen to be an idiot."

Mining can be profitable. The trick is to insert yourself into every step of product production and skill so as to be efficient at every aspect. It is possible to become quite good at mining, refining, and module/ship production. Add to that the ability to run missions quickly and you will find that every time you log in you will have something interesting and profitable to do. The margins on some modules are so great that inefficiency in mining, refining, production, and marketing are masked. This will allow you plenty of time to skill for the more fun aspects of Eve such as shooting at evil-doers! Additionally, you really don't need to be in a corp or leave empire to do this(although a group of like minded ppl can seriously make bank).
