I really get sick of tired of hearing alot about the the Ivy/Uni blob. As the one in charge of the Ivy League Navy, I'd like to set the record straight once and for all.
1. The Ivy League operates as a fleet, organized and with a clear command structure during operations. This is not a random blob squished together running about as a mob.
2. There are a great many of us, which allows us to field large fleets. It is our policy that any of our pilots can join essentially any fleet operation, as anything from a tackler/Scout to an ECM cruiser pilot to even Fleet Commander. Yes, we allow students to form and run fleets during war time. There is no better way for them to get leadership experience. We accept their mistakes and teach them what went wrong and how to avoid it next time.
3. We do not fight fair. This seems to be the main sticking point for so many, that it's unfair for us to outnumber you 20-80 to 1. My reply is this. Go play WOW if you're looking for a fair fight. Do you really expect anyone to fight fair? This is EVE, a harsh and unforgiving place and fair fights happen only by accident.
So if you expect to fight the Uni and the Ivy League Navy, accept the following facts:
1. We are Legion! 2. ECM is our friend, we love it. 3. The teachers are mean, we fly T2 ships, we're crusty and old and we like to kill things. 4. Eve Uni students are like a cute bunch of kittens, eager and playful. But I love seeing how absolutely ravenous and bloodthirsty they get, shouting "WARBEER!" and "YARR!" when a dec rolls in. And best of all, it really is special, seeing a group of the much derided 'noobs' rip apart 2 to even 4 year old players without mercy and playing with the bloody chunks of meat left, screaming for more.
So whining about blobs wins no points from me, I do not fight fair, and I don't teach my students to fight fair either. I do not view war as some sort of honorable contest. We fight to win and we will use every single advantage EVE offers us ruthlessly and without a shred of mercy to those who threaten us.
As one of our targets once said, "And then they blotted out the overview..."

Kill on, E-Uni pilots.

Eve University has gone from modest friendly people on a wellmeaning crusade to ... [insert anything similar to anything else in Eve].
It's your prerogative to blob, and teach your "students" to do likewise, it's within the world of Eve. Maybe they even feel successful killing 4 years old players with their meager 250 guns vs 8. It would do nothing for me - and never has.
Some people like to blob, others like to fight with small mobile units, and to each his own. One thing is certain - you learn very little from blobbing.

If someone attacks your blob they should expect that everyone in your blob will fire back. If you won't fight until you have a huge numerical advantage, you've become every other large alliance in the game today...enjoy.

When you can train up your guys to fight 5 vs 30 or 20 vs 80 and win with few or no losses you are no longer blobbing until then you are.

Teach your students some real skills in solo and small gang work. It will end up being a lot more useful, then sitting in a large blobs. Sad to see a good idea go the way of other alliances. No wonder Eve has lost it's way when it comes to small gang fighting.

In my 5 months and 4 wars in the uni I learnt a whole lot about blobbing and very little about pvp...
The uni needs to rethink their pvp training and give more small gang tactics because honestly, thats gonna be 80% of an EvE players pvp experience.

It's a blob, don't care how organized it is, it's one giant frikkin blob.
Now, by all means field large fleets, but when you show an ability to field these fleets, you get no pity if people war decc you, defend yourselves and don't whine on the forum.

I'm pretty sure you are a blob. If you were a fleet you wouldn't have 40 ships one one side of a gate and 40 more on the other side trying to lock down system that has three other gates.
The ECM part I agree with. You all do know how to use that ECM (along with sensor boosters). But dang, if you want to lock a system down at least cover the other gates.

The fact that EvE University fights in big numbers during wartime is taken out of context here and most of the people posting donÆt really know what they are talking about. So here comes the enlightenment:
Since EvE University is a corporation aimed to aid the new players in EvE they are not a PvP corporation. They work best in peace time and when they get war decced all classes have to hold. That leads to the general aim of the University to end wars as fast as possible to return to their usual business. That being said when fighting any alliance in EvE the University will face pilots with higher skill points and on average more experienced in pvp. The only valid way to end a war as fast as possible is demoralize the opponent. And what better way than to blob out their home system and denying them access to space in general. If you take into consideration those facts it makes absolute sense to bring as many pilots as possible during wartime to end it fast and return to teaching new students the variety of EvE.
That does not mean that EvE University only teaches blobbing to their students. There are plenty of small scale PvP squads (ranging for frigates to BS gangs) in the ILN lead by older members to teach players the dos and donÆts of small gang fights. These squads operate regularly during peacetime and allow a very unique and in-depth training for each member.

No one was whining here. Silentbrick just pointed out that we are not a random blob coming together by accident and decide to camp a gate but when we are at war our fleet organisation and effectiveness is at a high level. And if you would have looked at the killboards from the recent ôcampaignsö against the University you would have seen that there is absolutely no reason for the ILN fleet admiral to whine o7

Sounds like EvE-U is preparing their pilots for what the vast majorities of eve-wars are. Blob v. Blob.

Edited by: Willington on 05/03/2008 22:10:31 Edited by: Willington on 05/03/2008 22:06:20 I once was part of a gang that started in Fountain and had some system one or two regions north as destination. I think it was something like 4c or 4-c.
We engaged, already heavily outnumbered, only to encouter 20 other people next door. The enemies only comment in local after killing two or three ships and loosing one or two was:
"No blob, no win. gf"
And I think it's a pity. That was no fight. That was no fun, but it wasn't something that bothered us either. It was just like... "Wow. Congratulations on that move... "
With all respect: Teach your students as good as you can, because more pvpers is what eve needs. Myself - and I think i can speak of our whole alliance - is a great fan of both Eve University and Agony Unleashed. We often encouter fleets of the latter, but only rarely manage to get a fight, which is a pity, because their leaders have tremendous knowledge and recognize that we mostly have a handful of other ships nearby which would tear them apart, probably. Which is indeed problematic: If you have 20 in your gang and encounter a 10 man gang - would you ever say to your mates you 10, come with me, the rest, stay here? Of course not, but building large blobs is often wrong from the beginning.
So please do NOT teach them to join huge Carebear-Alliances (Q: How do I recognize one? A: They mention "0.0 access, ratting, complex, mining and pvp" in their recruitment-threads) fielding 13 drakes (absolutely horrible pvp-ship, btw), 5 Caracals, 5 Ravens, a Thorax and a Huginn when it comes to fight off a gang of 3 hacs. Teach them that quality goes over quantity. Nothing is better than having won (or at least held the field afterwards) against someone outnumbering you 3:1. If you cannot bring high quality ships, fair enough, nothing wrong with that. Not everyone can to have 20m sp+. But once again: PLEASE do not convey the "No blob no win" attitude. That is NOT how eve works today. That is NOT how eve will work in tue future! Ever!
I must quote one great pvper and one of my idols. Why? Because he looses one or two BS a day, never gives up and jumps into camps being hilariously much stronger than him (or his max. 4 man gang):
"Stop whining on the forums. Stop accepting ideas that pvp is dead. Small gang pvp is alive and well. Leave your fleet. And go find it."

If you fight fair, you are not fighting to win.
I have no comment on the quality of students out of Eve-U, simply because I have no idea. But if eve-u is teaching its students to win wars, then yes, outnumbering the opponent is an entirely valid tactic.
It might not make the best small gang PVPer, but then again, theres always guys like Agony for that sort of thing (I think?). But if these students have any hope of hitting the 0.0 big league, then knowing fleet discipline, and how a large coordinated action works is part of the parcel.
Of course empire honor wars are fun and all, but they don't actually matter. Frankly, Empire wars are the squabbling of dogs for the scraps of the masters plate. Thats why 0.0 alliances tend to not even notice when some random empire pirate corp goes up and wardecs them. If you want a seat at the table, you need to bring an army of soldiers, not a small gang of brawlers. -----------

One thing about Eve-Uni, the people who war dec them know what awaits them then they war dec the Uni anyway. Then when they lose to the 40-2 odds, they cry foul. This is a simple statement...if you dont war dec them, great. If you do, then when you get overrun, think to yourself, "why did we war dec these guys knowing what the outcome will be?" and know it's your own fault.

What I don't understand is statements like these:
"That leads to the general aim of the University to end wars as fast as possible to return to their usual business."
"But I love seeing how absolutely ravenous and bloodthirsty they get, shouting "WARBEER!" and "YARR!" when a dec rolls in".
Basically You are saying: "We love fights - but we will try to end them quickly by putting everything on hold, and get our organized fleet going, so we can make the others run by the sight of us - so we can get back to business as quickly as possible. Seems rather oxymoronic.
Maybe the answers to my questions lies within the history of Eve University - where they have always been thought of as the soft targets, and now Silentbrick wants to state that this is no longer the case - as to avoid future war decs - maybe.

Tbh, I've been dubious of the "training value" that E-uni has given its members for a while now, going back a year + when I first fought them and the ecm/damps blobs of around 20+ (Privs glory days). Imo, these latest tactics just confirm it, you really aren't teaching them anything skill related at all, except some finger exercises or the need to fit sensor booster so you actually make it on to #50 on the KM.
From what I've seen, E-uni "training" is pure ****. Any mediocre pvp corp could teach them better, at least then they would have to develop some tactics outside of huge numbers or huge EW.
If you really want to teach your people something, keep the gangs lower than 20. Small/med gang warfare is not only much more fun, but comprises the bulk of Eve PvP.
