I came of DAoC as well. Welcome to eve, the biggest differance you'll find between EvE the Dn'D based MMORPG's is the amount of time you'll need to play.
EvE you can truely play as much or as little as you wish, your charater advances while your off line, so you only need to log in often enough to start new skills. Grouping is much different that other games, while it's far better to play in groups, your not restricted (much if at all) by not being in one.
You spend your time doing what you want... I'll get into that more below.
Your role is by your own chosing, you can be a Tank, or a support charater, and switch back and forth as you like. Along with many other roles. Your not trapped into any role, you won't find out after a 4 months of getting to level X, you really don't like what class X does at the highend.
The highend game of EvE, is PvP, a little simlar to DAoC, but no RP's. Currently players can take stations from each other, and soon there will be a new "magor" patch that will allow for player owned stuctors. It's a pretty good time to get started playing EvE.

I highly recemened you do all the training missions. They will give you a sample of things you can do.
I'd recemend you do some agent missions while you wait for your 1st few skills to level. Frigates are fast, and you need little skills for agent mission, plus they will show you around the game and give some good cash.
You'll need to spend some time making money for ships while your skills develope.
You can:
Mine - easy money, not real exciting
Agent missions - you can run allot of these AFK, great for working people with kids.
Hunt Rats - you get a bounty for killing rats, and they drop loot you can sell, or recycle for minerals.

Yes, they spawn in .8 security systems and below. Do not go below .5 for "ratting" unless you have a curser. If you right click on the them they will have a bounty. The higher the bounty the meaner they are. I'd start with 2K rats, and when you good at killing them move up.

Police will not help you under .4. The highend game lives out in 0.0 and is open PvP.
Unlike DAoC, there is no realm imbalance, in open PvP if to many people join a certain corp or allaince they often pull themselfs apart. What fun is a war game with no one to shoot?
There are no 300 hibs, running around to kill 10 mids. While at times some alliances or corps may have more than others, open PvP is a much better system, people aline themselfs with others as they choose, your not trapped on a team.
If one team become to powerfull, nature has a way of balancing things out.

Not really. You can use the forums here, there is also a recruitment channel in game.
