It looks like ATI has released Catalyst 4.4.
Has anyone tried it yet? Does it fix the dreaded VPU bug when launching EVE?

Edited by: Sheriff Justice on 08/04/2004 05:10:22 So far 4.4 seems alright. I checked a couple of highway gates with heavy traffic and it didnt seem to lag or freeze. I will say it is definetly running smoother than 4.3. Unless I see any problems or major benchmark declines Ill likely keep the 4.4.
Hope that helps.
Whats the VPU bug u mention? Ill check it out.
edit: After a full night of playing I didnt get any slowdowns as I did on occassion with the 4.3 So far so good.

I have an Ati and am running 4.3 , Im a PC nublar so didnt know it would be good to downgrade to 4.1
I guess I will go get 4.4 tonight , do I just install over the top of 4.3 ie just download and install or is their voodoo ritual I have to do beforehand ?
So HMV consider Andy Williams and Dean Martin to be "easy listening" do they? Tell that to my mate Dave, he's been deaf for 20 years.

Estios,
4.4 Catalyst drivers are GOOD! I'm getting very nice performance out of them.
you have to uninstall your previous version first of all - Add/Remove Programs then click ATI Uninstall Software Utility.
That removes all ATI drivers etc from your HD.
Reboot, cancel the automatic driver installation process by windows, double-click the 4.4 driver file and you're all set.

Do it in this order. 1.) Uninstall the 4.3 control panel and reboot 2.) Uninstall the 4.3 driver and reboot 3.) When prompted with "Add new hardware wizard" hit cancel 4.) Double click on the 4.4 driver Icon and install,, then reboot 5.) Double click on the 4.4 control panel Icon and install,,, then reboot
When your done, right click on ur desktop, properties, settings, advanced, options, and at the top of the dialogue box it should say "Catlyst Version 04.4"
All Done.

What types of problems are u having with 4.4? Maybe we could help fix them.
It does seem that what works for 9800's doesnt always work with their other products and viceversa. That being said it is entirely possible the 4.4 will work fine for 9800 but cause problems for your 9200. Also, not to dumb it down but did u uninstall/install correct? How may times have u changed drivers? Perhaps theres alot of old junk left on ur system causing the problems.

Yeah I got the same thing on my 9200 when running 4.4 drivers,
"The VPU has reset the graphics accelerator because it was no longer responding to the display driver"
Then the screen kept going blank and returning with that message and a sick looking EVE splash screen. Had to reboot each time, just ended up installing the 4.1 drivers and it works fine.

Crap.
I guess I'll wait for 4.5 then. I really wish this bug would get fixed.
ATTN CCP: If this bug isn't your problem, but rather ATI's, please inform them so that we can at least see it in the release notes for the drivers.

Argh... the 4.4 drivers still dont work with my 8500 Radeon. It's a stupid game to wait for ccp or ati to fix it :(

Edited by: Cormeus Vanks on 09/04/2004 04:56:13 I just sent an e-mail to ATI about this. CCP better be reading this thread and talking to ATI about it. It seems all R200 (Radeon 8500, 9200) based cards have been suffering from this problem since Catalyst 4.2.

Yep works fine on my 9800 pro, as EVE's the only game I play I cannot vouch for any other, but everything on my machine, especially Directory Opus works great.

So what the verdict guys? upgrade to 4.4 or not?
Currently I'm running 4.3 on my 9600Pro.

If you have the 9800, upgrade. 9200 and below, don't. 9600, I don't know. Just try it and see I guess.

ATI Radeon 9800 Pro here and definitely worth the upgrade - everything just seems smoother.
I've even upped the Anistropic to 8x without a hitch.

The game freezes at the character screen with catalyst 4.4, so it's back to catalyst 3.1 for me, since 3.1 renders correctly the characters with hair on at least on ATI IGP 340M.

I had those "VPU Has recovered" error messages, traced it back to a poor AGP driver on my VIA mobo.
Installed the latest drivers for my mobo and have not had one yet.
I am using the newest ATi & VIA drivers without problems

I have a radeon 8500. I tried for about 3 hrs to get a driver to work. I read another post about the remove tool from ati. I was removing the driver through add/remove and it didnt work. I removed with that tool and reinstalled v4.1 catalyst driver, and it works great. So anyone with the 8500(and 9000 i believe is the same prob) download that tool and remove with it, then put 4.1 in. It fixed mine. Hope this helps.

Same problem here. I have the ATI Radeon 9200 and 4.4 just keeps erroring when trying to load game. Uninstalled 4.4 and installed 4.1 and works fine.

9200 here...seems to be that anything older than a 9600 gets these VPU resets, so perhaps CCP would be kind enough to stick a notice somewhere obvious that Catalyst 4.1 is the latest driver that works with their both their game, and these cards. Even better would be to get it fixed, as there are serious performance boosts using these newer drivers |

People are whingeing about ATI problems but what chipset/board are you guys running specifically that are having problems? I'm running a 9800XT, a mate is running a 9800 Pro, and we are having NO TROUBLE WHATSOEVER WITH THE 4.3 drivers... and we're both running 6xAA and 16X Antistropic, on 1600x1200. I've heard the 9600s are having issues full stop, and dont really care about any of the other boards myself as I am running an XT why should I? Get a decent graphics card and stop complaining :
