I've read threads about how great it would be to make eve piloting more hands-on, (tie)fighter-like space sim style. While this could be very fun, it seems impractical due to bandwidth limitations.
So instead I propose that EVE's space could be opened up with a simple addition: Manual, short range warps. It could be as simple as whatever direction your ship is facing, right click-warp-100Km, 150Km, 200Km & 250Km. This would give combat a whole new, more mobile and hands-on dimension.

The idea about not being able to warp 250km or manualy warp is that people wont constantly go around warping making safespots whereever they choose like outside of a ship scanners range. This also limits the size of a system by making the furthest planet the fartest once can warp. And 250k is something an mwd can perfectly do.

MWD is all well and good for use while having active control over direction & but the main warp drive of course needs coordinates for any large distance warp, but the ships scanner could tell if a short 250Km jump in any given direction was obstructed, so why not use it for tactical repositioning? I think this is a hack (rig?) my character would think of trying to make happen.

I agree, ships should not be able to manually warp far at all, and that it should perhaps involve an extra prep-time to get going to stop ships warping around at first sign of trouble in a fight. I mean it rather to allow ships with very slow manual thrusters to be able to reposition from the warp-in location near whatever point of interest without taking an age, but a min or two.

Edited by: Shamblingform on 07/03/2008 17:13:11 ... also, imagine one fleet warps to a station they think their WT corp is near, the defending group have setup position 150km away from station. There is no movement for a long moment, then the group that just arrived sends some fast ships in to harass and perhaps break formation of defending group. The defenders hold tight until the FC gang warps to the rear of attacking group, that now has some ships traveling fast @ 70Km away from where their main group is about to be dumped on etc etc. The possibilities are endless.

That would seriously hurt those who use MWDs and pay the penalties for equiping them (25% cap penalty is huge), this would allow you to jump on those who have fitted their ships for the ability to get into a position they want... Also, warping like that breaks all locks, negates incoming missles etc... that could become overpowered very quickly... Make it require a midslot module with the 25% cap penalty to do your manual warps and it would be fair (or remove both penalties) ç¦ |

Good point and idea for the mod. And this way, it would still be advantageous to have MWD speed to allow for formation adjustment if they were trying to jump your rear. MWD = short-range, fully-manual control VS SWC(short warp controls) = medium-range partial(sequence) control.
Flexable & fast or Committed & even faster over 100Km-250km

Back in the day, couldn't you warp in any direction, just set a distance and hit warp? Or like a max cap warp or something. I remember a friend telling me about it, how to make SS way away from the core of the system, so it was hard as hell to probe out.
