While I don't agree with all that Mardig said in his post, I have to agree that Learning skills contribute little to the game. It is a major deterrent to new players.
I have done some recruiting and I've seen many new players come in, play for a while, and then be told that they are pretty much wasting their time unless they get those learning skills over with soon. It would seem that the only function of the learning skills is to weed out the impatient folks at an early stage (in retrospect perhaps this isn't necessarily a bad thing, but still a bad game design choice in my opinion).
we've all done it: you just join the game, you're all excited to fly new ships and kill things, and you're given two choices: continue to learn skills at less than half the speed of us 'learned' individuals, or sit your rear down and learn skills for two months that do nought more than make it go faster. For two critical months you're stuck running level 2 missions in a Caracal (for example) because it's all you can do. Why are these skills here? Am I missing something crucial? Can't we just start with cranked attributes?
Perhaps the option should be available for allowing those who'd like to invest the time to gain a learning edge over the rest. But completing most of the current learning skill set gives a far too drastic advantage. Perhaps a single set of 5, high-ranked skills for each attribute should replace the current ones where those keen on it can gain only a very few attribute points.
Similarly to those of us, who I assume are the majority, that have left the final level of the advanced learning skills untrained, most people will leave said skills alone (perhaps require level 5 of the skill to gain any bonus to attributes, say 2 or 3 points) except for those group of hardliners that grind em out for the long haul (just as there are some who have indeed done the whole 5+ million skillpoints in learning).
