If you want to have an alt you can train as well as your main char, get a second account guys.
Scrapping alts on one account will not stop people from playing more that one in-game character, so this argument is rather pointless imho.

Yes.
Honestly: it would hurt scammers more than those playing fair. Sure it would make the life of a PvPer's business character harder, but we would get over with that.
I would love to make alts public if there would be a chance to stop scammers that way, but damn they would just use alt accounts, and there is no way to identify those. :/
Then again:

I don't know. Probably not, as it would be unfair to those having only one account.
Confused? Yes i am. Before writing this post, i tought the answer is clear. Spending just a few minutes to think about possible consequences and result of making accounts visible made clear how complicated the problem is. --------------------------------------------- *Comments in this post are mine and mine only and are not the views held by Mercenary Forces Corp* |

Quote: Alts do cause a lot of the problems in EVE, mainly because in an alt you are unaccountable for anything you do. I think this might be a good idea, but only some people should be able to see alts, like corp ceo's. Or maybe you could even make it a profession of sorts, investigating or something along those lines. Then people could hire 'investigators' to find alts of a person. Maybe a good level 4 agent could provide a service like this?
i agree with some of this but a CEO could easly post all your alts on the forums for everyone to see...but a nice RP'ing idea u got there. ------------------------------------------------ A Plague is comming.... |

(in answer to thread title) No, realistically, alts should not be visible or traceable imo.
Personally however, I'd really like to play in an atmosphere where alts *are* visible and traceable but too many people don't care about the characters, only the player behind the character. If chars were treated based on their individual merits and actions then yeah it would be cool to have it all out in the open, but unfortunately many people can't see beyond the "that's so-and-so's alt so I don't like him" syndrome, irrespective of the behaviour of the character in question. I don't see any way round this so I guess it's best to keep it hidden :(.

Thanks. I always think of the enormous DB the devs keep for EVE, with their detailed logs and everything, and I realize we use almost none of this vast resource of information. How cool would it be to have a sort of 'private investigator' profession, a very specialized one that you'd have to really work at to be good in (hell, maybe even make it like the Jovians, where Concord personally has to invite you to be an investigator). Such investigators could then be hired to do anything from find alts of a person, to tracking assets, to getting intelligence on enemy corps.
I think CCP has always wanted corporations to have tools like this, to make it possible to find out who commited a corp theft and so on, but has never found a good way to implement them. Maybe this is it?

Quote: I had a corp that was hit hard by alts taking advantage of my trust and good nature. Corp theft sucks...but CCP seems to let it be part of the game...however the discussion regarding alts is a valid one.
Regarding this and the scammers, it all comes down to common sense. If you let anyone into your corp and give them access to sensitive areas then you're asking for trouble. If you buy a BP or a ship without making sure it's what you want by doing a show info before accepting the deal, then you deserve to be scammed.
Scamming and (alot of) Corp theft can be cured by common sense. You also have to take into account that not only do people actually play there alts, but people also use alts to spy with. Kind of throws spying straight out of the window if you know what the main character is...

The reason you can train only 1 character at a time is exactly the same as in any other mmorpg. In other rpg's you can play only 1 character at a time, hack&slashing through hordes of monsters, but you DO have more character space on the same account. This roughly translates as being able to train only 1 character at a time in EVE.
You can say till your blue in the face but some people won't listen...
