Actually that would be a nice thing to do. Split the tournament in classes where only specified ship classes fight against each other but the highest class should be with mixed ships like it is now.

If you are only going to have X slots for competitors we need a way to figure out who gets them other then by who *****s the forum the most.
I vote you take signups, then have every team send out an interceptor pilot. Drop ALL of them at random distances from a marker and let them qualify based on survival time.

I would suggest finding ways to give the commenter's more information to remove alot to a guess work comments about ship fits in order to have them comment on possible tactics and stratagem likely to be employed.
A simple solution would be to equip all the camera operators with ship scanners and prior to the fight occurring scan the participants and give that info to the commenter's.
if the devs could make tools that provide info about who's doing what to whom info to the commentators that woud also be great info to talk about.
