First I want to apologize if there's another similar post or I'm writing in the wrong forum. I just got access to lvl 3 missions and I'm a bit afraid that my Caracal will not be up for the task.I also want to mention that I'm quite new to the game and therefore I can't afford t2 gear or rigs on my ship (due to sp/money issues). Yesterday I tried my first l3 mission and I actually completed it with this setup.
High: 5x arbalest standard ML (fitted with standard light missiles) Med: 1x 10mn AB, 2x LSE (T1 regolith), 1x Invulnerability field Low: 2x BCU named 2x Light Scout Drones
I noticed that although my firing range is about 40 km I don't seem to have the sufficient DPS to effectively disperse the heavy NPCs. I brought down a 200k NPC in about 15-20 salvos. My shields lasted ok since it wasn't a really hard mission but I'm not sure how will it perform against more difficult ones. I'm considering replacing the 2 arbies with heavy launchers for more DPS (my powergrid doesn't allow for more heavy launchers with the current setup) and 1 PDU in the low slots.
So my question is,, do you think I have a chance of running missions in a Caracal considering that I'm a 1'5 mil SP player or should I consider moving to BC (drake since I'm very much into missiles). Thanx in advance for the replies.

My advice would be to stick to level 2 missions and bring up your Drake skills (shields / Heavy Missiles / BC skills) ... There are about 10 threads on Drake setups. both Active and passive tank and will take a little time to train for.
Missiles rock but you'll want to look into Heavy missiles soon, so spend time on them :) Mission step-ups are crazy really 2-3 is big .. 3-4 was killer for me! So dont be worried about taking some time before the jump :)
Good luck in your Caracal , but beware its paper thin armour! :)

nope.. u will have issues and the probability that u ll lose your caracal is extremely high! unless u rly do research on missions and skip the more difficult ones. but whats the point of lvl3s when only doing the hard ones?
and why do u use arbalest standards? use Arbalest Assault Launchers on a caracal.
u dont need to have great skills for a drake and still be able to do lvl3s with relative ease. just bear in mind that with low skills it might take a while to get elite frigates down with heavies.

i love the caracal...spent several months in it, before i moved on to a drake, never tried to do level 3's in it tho...i just smacked level 2's and trained up for a drake meanwhile...
however, i had some fun in EFT a couple of minutes ago and a tech2 fitted caracal would own level 3's imo...but then again, if you can fit t2's, why not go for a drake instead...
drake is a great ship, i am now soloing L4's in it (full T2 tank, T1 launchers tho). takes a bit of time, but it's exciting :))
so i strongly advise to trian up for a drake in level 2's and hone your skills in a drake, then move on to L4's and train up for a BS.
just finished worlds collide level 4, man that was fun

Yes you're right Gamov, those are Arbalest Assault Launchers. Sorry, my bad. I also love this ship and I was hoping to stick to it for as much I could.

Yes, you can use your Caracal for level 3 missions if you choose your missions wisely (i.e. avoiding enemies dealing EM damage) and if you replace the Invul hardener to a missions specific shield hardener (kinetic if fighting Guristas etc.). Of course, your survivability will increase significantly if you mount another shield hardener to your cruiser.
As you probably already know, you will perform much better in a Drake. There are three main reasons (though one is enough) to why you should use a battlecruiser for level 3 missions:
1) Your dps (damage per second) will increase with at least 30%, not counting drones. 2) Your shield regen can be increased 3- to 5-fold while not sacrificing dps. 3) Your shield buffer is automatically increased 3-fold compared to a cruiser.
So, not only will you finish the missions faster in a battlecruiser due to heavily increased damage, you will also decrease the probability of getting killed by NPCs dramatically.
However, if you don't have the skills or the isk to step up to battlecruisers you can manage in a cruiser with some difficulty (depending on how you prepare yourself for a specific mission).
