I am looking at ways to improve my 2d maps. I am aware you can autogenerate maps using the Eve data dump and it's co-ordinates within, but what apps are there that let you do this? I am quite happy to tinker around and don't need a walkthrough, but I don't even know where to start
Thanks in advance

The only auto-layout generating software I know about is Graphviz - you could try fiddling with that.

There was some source out for the influence map, with some diggin im sure you could find it. But unfortunately its slow as hell it rapes my oced q6600 and still take 10 minutes to generate an image My Blog |

Hi ombey, I'm currently working on a project right now, but if you want for a fee, I will be happy to design a program like this for you.
It can be in php, or .net
contact me in game if your like to talk more about this, I wont be able to start for at lest a 3 to 6 weeks. My work speaks for it self.

Thanks for the responses guys. Having pondered on it a while, I think I'll just stick with doing it manually... -- 2d EveMaps

Hi, Ombey.
Not sure you remember but we once talked about doing a flash version of the map. Here's what I got done in PHP.
EVE-Files: Kador (Auto-Generated Map)
The problem comes when I generate regions like The Forge where the systems are all overlapped. (read: messy)
It could still be implemented using some obscure AI algorithm to give the systems some margin.

I've written an App to autocreate maps some time ago, but it has never been released publically.

How did you figure out the 2D placement of the star systems? Was this just the exported 3d data from the static dumps minus the Z axis? |

Here's the file in PHP.
EVE-Files: Region Image PHP
It uses the Z-axis to get the systems positions. The gray margins were implemented for my local site. The DB is in MS-SQL. There's some GET vars that can be set to show the labels and the security, and also the width of the image. If you still have doubts, Sigma Xi'Pi, just convo.
PS: I hope Ombey doesn't mind me putting this file on his thread.

With the purpose of continuing this thread I'm posting another image that reproduces the mess that is the Forge.
EVE-Files: The Forge (Auto-Generated Map)
The thing I had in mind was a Flash map, so you could roll the mouse over systems and get extra info.
PSs:
Eddie, I'll look into that Planar map thing, although my math's a bit rust.
A friend of mine (a REAL computer engineer) showed me an application in JAVA he did in the university, where some moving dots where all connected to each other and you could dragged them to other places.
The thing is that these dots always found a way to isolate themselves from the other dots (a bit like electrons). It was a artificial intelligence project. So...
Again, I'll look into this Planar map and see if it's the same thing.
Ombey, if you want to check the php site I could gladly open the firewall so you can have a peek. I'm online from 16:00 forward (EVE time). My IP is dynamic so I'll have to give it to you, just convo.

Made this a long time ago, if it's worth anything to you, you're welcome. Old version php only, newer version flash with a neat app to create preferences for an embedded map.

I've not done much messing with Flash files, but doesn't Adobe have some way to export the vector data so that you could manipulate it in Illustrator. This would allow you to remove overlapping systems.

Hey,
Not sure if anyone is still reading this thread but here goes.
EVE-Files: The Forge - Separated Systems v0.1 (Auto-Generated)
I've managed to mess with the distances between systems through simple trigonometry. It's not yet the result I'm expecting to accomplish, but it'll do to keep this thread going. The info of each system is: M for moons, A asteroids, I icefields, etc. (read: sec status, name and etc.)
I'm still having a hard time figuring it out what's a factory (F) and what's a laboratory (L), the others I've managed to figure out: C (clone facility) and R (repair facility).

Ombey, I have always been admiring your work.
Connecting Excel or openoffice to the database dump can get you where you want. If you require help (queries etc.) you can contact me ingame or through tanx0r[at]gmail.com

Hold that thought: I'll try and generate an excel sheet this weekend.
Tanx- really love your website, it's great, I am using it now to revamp my maps :)
I'll be in touch in-game about Excel... but as you are generating an Excel sheet, I'll wait and see what you come up with Once you have the data in there you can create rollups and feed those to a lot of different apps, I'm sure others here can tell you which ones to use.

Ombey, I wrote a little bit of php code that generates a csv file (columns seperated by "|").
I will keep hosting this as it includes all outposts (which aren't static) as well.
You can find it at http://tanx0r.org/regionscsv.php.
For your convenience I have imported the current data into an excel sheet which can be found here: http://tanx0r.org/files/evesystems.zip.

That's exactly what I used, along with a ton of bourne shell script.
Basically, parse through the data and build some easier to parse (normalize) data files for each region, const, and system. Then build sets of .dot files and run them through Graphviz. Amuzingly it support vrml too. :)
I did think about seeing if you could use the IGB to display them and dynamically add in your corp/gang/intel information too. dealing with the UNDERPANTS of eve since 2004 |

Ombey, You have some great maps. (Just wanted to say that)
Also, since you said you dont have webspace, and people keep posting php and sql solutions... You may wanna have a look at loading them on your computer. If you run windows, you could get Apache Triad and just run a server locally on http://localhost might be the easiest/cheapest way.
I'd offer webspace for you, but I dont have a site anymore. sorry - I wish I had something witty to put in a signature. - |

If only what You need, is to geterate some images off from PHP script, all what You need, is PHP itself, nothing more. Simple php_shell.cmd:
@echo off if "!%1" == "!" (echo Usage: %0 path_to_php-cli.exe && exit) if not exist "%1" (echo Invalid path to PHP interpreter && exit) ftype PHPScript="%1" -f "%%1" -- %%* assoc .php=PHPScript will install .php scripts to work the same way as .bat/.cmd scripts works. You may even add .php to the PATHEXT variable and have full advantage. -- Thanks CCP for cu |
