getting into drones and i'm looking at the faction specializations on which to buy, knowing that each drone factions are different (Gallente kinetic damage and more damage than other drones, Minmatar drones are much faster and do explosive damage). not finding a topic on the matter i figured to start one.
which faction specialization is better for what fighting? and is there a combination that do more damage?

Gallente drones (thermal damage) do the most raw damage but are usually the slowest. Minmatar drones (explosive damage)are the fastest but also have fairly low damage but not the lowest. Caldari drones (kinetic damage) are somewhere in the middle and are a good balance between Gallente and Minmatar in terms of overall performance.
Amarr drones (EM dmaage) are generally not worth it unless you're fighting something that is really weak to EM damage but not much else. Even against EM/Thermal NPCs Gallente drones do better because their damage multiplier is enough to make up for your target's higher thermal resist. They're between the Caldari and Minmatar drones for speed and tracking, but do less damage than the Mimatar drones.

I trained both Gallente and Minmatar drone specialisation to level IV.
That lets you use Ogre IIs, Berzerker IIs, hammerhead IIs and warrior IIs.
Gives you good selection of options regardless of the ship size (BS/Cruiser)
or the the situation you want to use them in (PvE/PvP).
The other 2 races specialisations are (imho) only worth it if;
1. You do a crapload of ratting/missions vs Bloods/Sansha or Gurristas.
2. You plan on focusing on droneboats.
Even then, the gallente drones will do the job.

If I didn't have anything else to train at the moment (LAFFO) I'd get the Caldari one. Shields are the only tank a drone has, so it might be worthwhile if they ever change NPCs to change targets or target intelligently or not be mentally disabled.

the only thing really missing here is cost.
Gallente drones will cost you about 10x as much as any other drones.
Although the prices have dropped, losing a full set of hammerhead IIs due to having to warp out or to some guy shooting them will cost you multiple millions.
Losing the same number of vespa IIs will cost you a few hundred thousand only.
If you use drone boats for anything besides ratting/missioning these costs will add up very fast.

The specialisations themselves are fast to train, if you asked me I would say train whichever you like as its only a 5 day or so train to level IV.

The other guys have pretty much covered everything you need to know about drones i have finished completing all 19 drone skills, 20.480mil in skill points so i have used them all. You want to find the right ship for your skill level of couse, i can only fly gallente ships a domi is a great all round ship you can use for almost any situation so aim around that for starters.
