Edited by: Zanpt on 14/03/2008 09:03:42 Yes, I'm having whiteout. Before this patch I was able to run 7-8 Eve windows in Classic with no cache and some other settings turned down. Since the patch I have barely been able to run 5-6 Eves. One or two of the Eve windows will cycle in and out of whiteout. When in whiteout the FPS is awful and there is significant lag in everything from getting the window to take focus and come to the front to clicking and right clicking items and getting the expected action.
The whiteout seems associated with extreme, excessive CPU usage. CPU usage seems to have risen with this patch.
I can't run all the chars I'd like to, so the ones I can't run will expire and not be reactivated until somewhere down the road when CCP straightens this stuff out.

I saw this last night as well. I run two Premium clients on two monitors. I logged one of them off to relog in as a different account and the splash screen background was whited out, and game performance was very slow.
After I dropped both clients and allowed time for my OS to drop all the related threads I was able to log in as normal, with no white-out.
Bug report it if I were you.

I run dual monitor but this never used to be a problem up until recently, CCP please fix this i want to run more than 3-4 accounts

Exactly the same issue. Can no longer run two accounts when before I could run three on my Core2Duo computer. Now when I try and logon a second account all I see is a white-out. Sometimes I can't even login the second account as it stalls on the authenticating part.
I suspect huge memory leaks or something that is making the CPU use waaay more processing power than before because when running Eve my computer is simply slower than before. ---- Disco Biscuits, Baby!

I'm having the same problem when running two clients using the Classic content. One of the clients will "whiteout" and fps on both drops to 2/3 fps. I am not, however, always affected by this. I don't seem to be affected as often when missioning, it appears to happen more when both accounts are travelling.
I can only get both to work again at a decent fps by closing down both clients. If I just close the client that has gone whiteout the fps on the other seems to go back to normal, but when logging the second client back in it is instant whiteout if I haven't first closed both.
I did see this occasionally pre-patch when using the premium content (this is why I stuck with Classic), but never with the classic.

What's going on in the background is that the "clouds" from the usual image are missing. Same thing with the character screen.
I also have this bug. It occasionally happened before the patch, now it's happening all the time, making it a major annoyance when playing with 2 accounts. I've taken to calling it WSoD (White Screen of Death).

Edited by: Dog Solitude on 20/03/2008 19:45:19 Same issue here though I am hoping a computer upgrade will help. I don't find it happens every time, and usually only happens after a longer duration of 2 clients being open.
I also found that flipping up to fullscreen and back down to window (or vice versa) would reset the screen at first. I'm not finding this to help anymore. If I am in window mode and swap to fullscreen, it won't even maximize anymore but flash a couple times and resume the white-lag-screen of doom.
I tried changing all sorts of the in-game graphics settings to no avail.

I'm getting the same issue, but for me it's when I'm using 4 accounts. Running 3 has been fine (so far) but now whenever I load a 4th client, it will quickly get a whiteout + 2/3 fps. It doesn't matter which graphics settings I use it stays the same. If i reboot the broken client, it comes back exactly the same. However if I close a non-whited client, the broken one suddenly changes back to display normally, of course if I load up the account that just closed - it will have the whiteout instead. Unlike some here though, everything else works... The whiteout client is slow and painful to look at, but my other 3 clients run are the same speed & windows responds happily.
For those wondering what we're talking about, here's a screenie of whitey in all it's glory...

Can you folks edit your posts, or add new posts to include the following info please?
Operating System Processor Memory amount DirectX version Graphics card
How many EVE clients do you use regularly What resolution you usually use (list for each client) Windowed/Fullscreen: Windowed (list for each client) Number of monitors
example:
OS: Windows Vista Business CPU: AMD 64 X2 5200 2.6GHz Memory: 3070 MB DirectX version: 10 Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT
No. of EVE clients I usually run: 5-6 Resolution I usually use: 1024 x 768 (all 6) Windowed/Fullscreen: Windowed (all 6) No. of monitors: 3

Handy thing to do when in the middle of a L4 mission and the WSoD appears... :)
A lot of things used to help, sometimes just hitting esc twice (to bring up the options menu, then making it go away) on the non-bugged client used to help, but the WSoD got a lot worse after the patch, and even changing resolution doesn't usually work anymore.

Edited by: NightmareX on 06/04/2008 16:18:57 About the white background. I have been testing alot of settings with my graphic card with different drivers to my Radeon X1900XT card.
The thing i have found out is that i got that white background thing from Catalyst 7.4 driver. On Catalyst 7.3, i could run everything on max in the Catalyst Control Center. I had no problems at all there.
But when i installed Catalyst 7.4, i started to get those white backgrounds that make my fps go down to 5 fps. And that was only when i had Anti-Aliasing on max. And my Catalyst A.I. was also on standard, not Advanced. So i didn't upgrade my driver at all.
So then we are here today, and was thinking, lets try out the Catalyst 8.3 driver. Because there is soooooooo many game fixes from the 7.3 driver to the 8.3 driver, so it's a must to install it. But i still got the same white background thing when i had everything on max settings.
So i did try every graphic settings, and i did try every level on every settings. So i found out this.
I could run everything on max except for Anti-Aliasing. I had to set it at 4x and had to set the Catalyst A.I. to Standard, then i could use EVE with Anti-Aliasing and all of the other nice graphic settings in EVE.
So i'm not sure if it's a problem with the driver or if CCP haven't integrated something to EVE that may have been changed in the newer drivers.

That was my setup until 2 weeks ago. Running a 2nd premium account would always result in "whiteout" on the 2nd client. Changing a random graphics option on the unaffected client and hitting reply would temporarily resolve the issue. It would re-appear when docking or jumping gates.
The "whiteout" would also appear on random item images in-game. The background would be all white while the item itself would be ok.
Copying the .dds files from the cache of the unaffected client to the affected client would resolve that issue. Tho new items not already in cache would either load ok or with white background.
Since then I've upgraded to a GeForce 8800 GT and have no problems running 2 premium clients. Altho, the same issue has appeared once, while running 3 premium clients.

I'm beginning to think this is something to with texture memory and perhaps a leak in something using texture memory.
Is everyone getting the WSOD running more than 1 client? If so, when you get it, close down one of the other clients. That fixed it for me.
I think this may be a similar thing to the "change graphics settings" fix.
Something is happening to clear down GFX card memory, and it's OK.
I don't have any tools to see what's going on within the graphics card memory, but perhaps the Devs could run 2+ classic clients for a few hours.
By the way, this ALWAYS happens to me after a jump. It never just flips to WSOD flying about. However, the fix by logging the other client is instant.
Also of note, I only (heh, "only"!) have the 320Mb texture memory model of the 8800GTS.

I can confirm I've seen the login screen looking different too. It has just the background stars with no wispy space dust overlayed.
I'd always assumed this was just a movie being played back, but it looks like it must be rendering the background on the fly. Thus also explaining why the GPU temp also goes nuts when the machine is just sitting at the login screen!

Yes, closing down one client has always fixed the problem. Before the last patch the WSoD would only appear in a jump or when docking/undocking, but after the patch it started appearing whenever it felt like it.

Whiteouts or WSOD continue to occur for me. "...changing the res..." which I took to mean changing the screen resolution didn't work in 9 out of 10 cases, indeed, changing anything on either the 'whiteout' client or the 'normal' one doesn't consistently fix it. The only solution is to log off one of the clients. Sometimes if you log off the whiteout client it is still affected when logging back on again. Currently I'm logging off the non-affected client and seeing if this always clears the whiteout and does not itself whiteout when it logs back on.

When i'm running only in Windowed Mode, it seems that 1440x900 is the ONLY resolution that gives me the whiteout. I can run all other resolutions, like 1360x768 and 1680x1050 in windowed mode without any problems.
It only happens when i run EVE in 1440x900 Windowed Mode.

Further update. White seems to occur at a random time during any session. i.e. it doesn't seem to matter if you have both clients running an hour, 2 hours or more. Whiteout still seems to occur when starting or stopping a warp but especially if you open an info window, click on a character or something like that.
If I close the non-whiteout client, the whiteout client clears to normal. But if I then re-start the first client IT is now whitedout. (terrible adjective)

Like stated earlier this problem showed up after a patch. For me it always happens on the third client. Shut one of the two working fine down and the third(whiteout client) instantly clears. Its patch related as I have been running x3 clients without issue for over a year.

Update on problem for me, I just ran 3 clients no problem, when i tried to startup the first, my screen locked up, and i had to press CTRL ALT DEL and spam the end task buttom for the "Bugged" client, I have sent bugreport and my spec's are on this.
Has anyone found a fix to both the above and whiteout? or can we get an update from CCP Dev's?

Edited by: Jack Creme on 16/04/2008 07:55:07 There was no change after the new patch on Tuesday 15th. One of my 2 clients undocked straight into a whiteout. Logged it off and left it for an hour or so. On re-logging the remaining client froze then flickered for a good 5 minutes or so before the 2nd client got to a stable screen.
More random objects are seen as icons with a white background in either client.
The problem is clearly linked to the graphics engine; although a few people in my corp with 2 or more clients haven't seen it others have. One runs 2 of his clients on a laptop with no problems.
Its becoming very frustrating. I've jumped both characters out of 0.0 as its far too risky having this occur when reds appear and logoffski isn't always a option. I'll probably cancel both subs fairly soon as a protest - and not renew until this appears to be fixed. Maybe the 3rd as well, although he's got about 3 months to go.

I would get the whiteout after anything from 5 mins to 3 hours of play on the 3rd client initially and would end up just closing it. After boost patch I would get it on the second client much sooner and frame rate dropped. It would always be on the last client to be started up so sometimes would be the 1440x990 client. Trying to change graphic settings including the window size didn't fix it.. only closing the client and reopening it would sometimes work. Eventually it got to the point where WSOD would occur on the second client pretty much as soon as I undocked and then I started getting screen dropping out ... monitor was ok tho no video picture and ocassionally the monitor would start switching between analogue and digital looking for a signal. Then the graphics card died - no loading up into windows and no screen. Characters on the BIOS settings screen seemed to have been swapped about. I could start up windows in safe mode though trying to reinstall drivers hasn't had any affect and trying card on a freinds PC also had the same wierd characters in BIOS screen and windows failing to load correctly after the first startup which noticed new graphics card and updated driver (using latest version of Nvidia drivers). The graphics card appears to have slightly brown "cooked" looking solder stains which I had on a really old graphics card (MX550) few years back when I started playing Eve. Though that was a hot summer and the old PC didn't have very good ventilation and no chassis fan while the Athlon has chassis fans, CPU fan, graphics card fan and pretty good ventilation and gets a regular dusting to keep the vents clear

1) Run DXDIAG program (Start - Run... - DxDiag) this is a standart part of DirectX package 2) Go to "Display" tab 3) Push button "Test Direct 3d" 4) Upon you see spinning cube - press ESC and cancel other tests
The graphics in all three clients resets, and WHITEOUT disappeared.
5) Repeat steps 3-4 in case of another WHITEOUT
This workaround works fine for me. But little annoying keep launched DXDIAG in taskbar while playing.

Another solution (was posted around already):
When the whiteout happens: a) Switch to the client with no whiteout. b) Switch to Fullscreen Mode and back there (ALT+Enter).
It resets the graphic so whiteout is gone for time being

Well not totally sure if its a fix. But so far havent had a whiteout in over two days when using multiple clients on the same comp. All i did was this; for one client i used the /end/LUA:OFF command in the shortcut thats it. Everything i read pointed to the cache by trying that i have cache normal on one client and cache in the old place before trinity on the other. Seems to work will update if i get error again, but so far no recreation of it no matter what i try.

Hi,
I get a combination of white screen / texture errors since patching last week. Though it seems sporadic. CPU/GPU temps are normal and no issues running other intensive games (Crysis/Oblivion). I did notice that after the texturing oddness occurs in EVE, and I can gracefully return to the desktop, Crysis/Oblivion failed to load properly. Though after rebooting, Crysis/Oblivion loaded as usual. So I sort of suspect something odd going on with video/texture memory.
In another instance of the texture oddness, I ran dxdiag.exe to try the dxdiag fix suggested earlier, but found it died (essentially nothing was visible on the screen and things just sort of hung) once it hit the DirectX 8.0 and DirectX 9.0 tests (the DirectX 7.0 test was fine). A reboot resolved this (reboot and then running the dxdiag tests).
I've run on the classic client and premium client, re-installed the client, re-installed DirectX 8.0/9.0c, re-installed the video drivers, and Windows is up to date. Still seem to have the odd texture mapping from time to time. Toggling the star-map or hitting Escape and then returning sometimes clears things up, but occasionally it just starts "layering" the textures (e.g., screen does not get wiped and restored and windows that have been exited remain on screen).
Occasionally, texture maps are displayed in the background instead of being mapped to a button/ship/etc (for example, on launching the character who is at a station, the texture map for the buttons appear as the background (white with the button images), or fonts on the buttons are skewed (larger than they should be) on some of the buttons. Station backgrounds sometimes look greyish (fog, perhaps). Launching out of the station basically keeps the background texture that had appeared incorrectly, so the star overlay isn't visible.
I've had one case when I had left the launch window open (logged out, just allowing the EVE graphic/poly to render on screen at the opening screen beginning) and I returned later to see the texture map for the poly on screen instead. Oddly enough the classic client did this once too, but I haven't seen that recently.
I'm not sure if it's related to the patch, but the texture oddness did seem to start last week. It could be coincidental.
Errors have been "reported to Microsoft". I'll start running logserver.exe regularly to see what I can be found as well.
My specs: Operating System: Windows XP Professional (all patches as of 2008/04/21 -- 5.1.2600 SP2 Build 2600). Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo E6850 @3.00GHz. Memory amount: 2046MB RAM (OCZ). DirectX version: 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904). Graphics Card: OCZ NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTX 768MB. Graphics Driver: nv4_disp.dll (v6.14.0011.6921 [English], 05/12/2007).

I'm getting this problem pretty consistently now, though I can't tell if it's the 4th client or the patch. Either way it's a bit more than annoying and bordering on the game-breaking. Even with all 4 clients open I'm getting FPS in the 60s on the selected client with only 70% memory usage so I'm not sure how this can be a resource issue.

Sorry to hear you guys are having trouble - I don't have any white-out apart from a momentary flash of maybe 1-2 frames right after undocking. All textures etc display correctly from there on.
Eve, Premium Gfx OS: Windows XP SP2 CPU: AMD FX-57 2.8GHz Memory: 2GB DirectX version: 9.0C (latest rev) Graphics: nVidia 8800GTX
No. of EVE clients I usually run: 2 Resolution I usually use: 1280 x 1024 (all 2) Windowed/Fullscreen: Fullscreen (all 2) No. of monitors: 1
I run Premium graphics, extreme cache on both clients, fullscreen at 1280x1024 HDR + driver-forced 8x FSAA with 16xAF. Looks great and I only get the one flash of white - usually connecting one portion of my ship to the station if its visible.
I have a second PC at work, also running fine.
Even if CCP's graphics code is spotless, nVidia's and ATI's graphics drivers may need to be checked by their respective companies in order to fix the problem, ie the problem may not lie with CCP.
Peace, hope its fixed soon. ----- VPN-Firewall Guide

Agree with you there Splash, in so far that the clients don't seem to 'fight' (flickering 2nd clients - locking up)over the graphic resources, but the whiteout may still occur later in the session. I haven't run 2 or more clients simultaneously for a couple of weeks now, however, judging by it still being listed in 'Known Issues' I guess the design team haven't found the source(s) of this problem.
I'll say again, this only started after the March patch. Having played eve for over 4 years with about 2&1/2 having more than 1 account this never occurred. The nearest was a white flash that appeared during every gate jump or on the map, if I remember correctly. That came after a patch once. CCP fixed it quite soon afterwards.

Edited by: ari III on 05/05/2008 00:39:48 New trick I"ve been using and has been workimg is to log all three clients on to the character selection page before selecting a char to enter the game. This has prevented whiteout which I was always getting on the third client when I entered the game with two others first. I tried some of the other tricks but they worked for only one run, next time I tried to run three whiteout on the third until I tried this new method of entering the game. I have had a severe lag from time to time but no whiteout so far. I'll edit down the road if whiteout returns.
PS I can always run two clients without problems, always. Whiteout is on the third and as mentioned before it showed up immediately after a patch earlier this year. |

Finally an clarifying answer from CCP.
Originally by: CCP Sputnik rules to run multiple eve clients: * every client needs its one installation/copy of the eve folder * deactivate the sound in the clients (its possible to run one client with sound but not more than one) * run in window mode (if your pc is getting slow minimize the windows for a short while - 1 or 2 seconds - this will reset the memory and cleans up all the stuff trinity is loading into the ram to make the game faster) * best combination is 1 premium 1 classic client, but 2 premium should work too with enough RAM

* dont blame CCP if anything is going wrong, we only support one client per machine (I run multiple clients all the time, but official support is something totally different.)

Oh so I guess all those "two for one account"-deals were expressly meant only for people with two computers? Funny, I don't recall it being mentioned in the offer.
That's a bullcrap copout if I ever saw one, and it also opens a whole can of worms labeled "false advertising", since giving discounts for multiple accounts strongly implies support for the same.

That has to be one of the most appuling stments to come from ccp for a long time, there must be about 70% of players have 2 accounts and like to use them at the same time and no where have they said anything like this before to warn us of this problem.

I see this has/had slipped to page 8 - but I still have the problem. A whiteout still randomly occurs on any running client. It's still listed on the 'known Issues' page:
"Technical Issues
* Some computer configurations show the background nebula as white if more than one client is used"
I wonder what, if any, progress has been made on this?

Someone earlier asked if there was anyone running only 1 client and still having the whiteout problem. Well, here I am. I only have one char, just got back into EVE today, and experienced the whiteout problem for the first time. Strangely, it only really seems to happen if the station is visible on screen. It doesn't happen when docked at all. I really hope someone fixes this.

Edited by: Bluebeard on 04/06/2008 19:53:52 I used to get this problem and solved it in the following way.
1) Use the classic client 2) Use a seperate directory for each Eve client 3) Login the first client and once you're ingame, press 'escape' to bring up the options screen. press 'escape' again or click the close window button. 4) Repeat step 3 for each additional client.
I have a script to start each client
----- set USERPROFILE=C:\games\Eve3 start "Eve3" "C:\games\Eve3\eve.exe" /END /LUA:OFF -----
The interesting part, is if you start up 2 clients, let them run for 30 mins or so (without using the option screen trick above) and then examine the memory used in the task manager. *Then* go into the options screen on the clients and watch the memory used drop like a stone. I seriously suspect there is a memory leak there and entering the options screen, somehow frees it.
My system: AMD x2 4400 4 gig RAM 1 gig 7950 GX2 Windows XP Pro
I happily run 4 clients at once at 1,600 x 1,136 resolution and 5 at a push.
Hope this helps,
Blue

Windows XP Pro SP2
Twin Intel Core 2 Quad 8GB RAM Twin ATI Radeon HD 3900 Crossfire
Eve Classic, used to be able to run 6 clients without hiccup (pre-Trinity).
Now trying to run more than one client per graphics card causes a massive drop in FPS the game window 'flickers' Eventually the entire system hangs, sometimes with the screen still visible but unusable, sometimes I get a GPF and forced restart.
Latest drivers for everything are installed.
Windowed Mode, 1280x960
