You can see "Siege" "Citadel" "Bomb"(blurred) "Assault" "Heavy Assault" and "Heavy" on the wall, two notes in a very early production stage (one probably means "Rocket") are unfortunately unreadable because the camera moves.
Additionally, the bombers are also being redesigned, probably to solve the "battleship-launchers on frigs"-problem, along with Punisher, Rifter, Heron, Atron and Imicus.
On the shader-side, Amarr bc and bs, along with old-Impairor are in an advanced design stage (although the Apoc and Impairor are already on TQ)
And we might get new missile-sounds.
And if I'm correct and the ships on the notes face to the right for shaders and to the left for model redesign, we might see a new drake soon(TM)
Indeed a very interesting devblog. We have a winner.

Will all the models be replaced, or will we still see NPCs with the old ship designs - like the T2 Skinned Ibis in this mission:
http://everookie.blogspot.com/2011/02/if-i-were-coding-eve-id-fix.html
Would still like a missile launcher hardpoint on the Ibis too. Skye Aurora is a 7 year old Girl Who Wants to be on the CSM! Unfortunately, the Lawyers say you have to be 21, so.. Nicely done - being a gallente specialist, I particular like the velator. It looks more....balanced, while still asym. Good job to the art team. I like the rest, too.
Now redo the dominix so it doesn't look like flying upside-down shoe/space potato/bodily waste. |

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not quick to complement CCP recently, but this video was well-produced. Instead of the usual executive sh!t heads sitting in an interview chair spouting more bullsh!t, you have a good mix of employees doing their jobs. This is an excellent means for humanizing CCP.
Also: You might want to burn those EXCELLENCE t-shirts as seen here at 0:42. The Excellence campaign wasn't very excellent at all.

Tbh I never cared how my rookie ship looked like, not even on my first day in EVE. Everyone who has ever played Quake or really any other game knows that the free weapon you get when you spawn sucks and you better get something real, and quick.
Still, they look nice. |

I hope we get enough warning about the assets patch before it arrives, so I can stock up on the amount of alcohol that will be required to drown my sorrows.
Goodbye, beautiful Velator design. Hello, Caldari-fied Velator design. In my mind, Gallente are about curves.
Goodby, beautiful Reaper design, Hello, Caldari-fied Reaper design. In my mind, Minmatar are about shoving the essential bits together to make a ship that does what you want, and nothing more. No fancy casings, no decorative armour plate, no curves where they don't contribute to functionality.
And the Drake? It will be different, and I'll have to drink to forget what it used to look like :)
So much drinking. So little time.
I, personally, welcome our V3 design overlords.

Don't be fooled by that sketch of the Reaper on the blog page; that angle almost makes it look mostly symmetrical (and therefore awesome) but the actual model is still a lopsided, side-car lookin' thing. Everything else looks great tho. |

They re-did the engine casings to flow better with the curves of the forward superstructure. Nothing more was needed since it was already pretty damn sexy. |

Suggestion:
When you deploy the new eve website with ship previews, have an option to see the old ship models to include changes to the model, textures, and shaders.
It would be interesting to see how the Ibis of today compares with the original Ibis, for example. |

To be honest, I'm probably not the first person whose never actually thought of that before... and it goes to show how long I've been playing, that for a second or two, I thought you were trolling :(
Well, it's an understatement to say that "that sucks", so instead I sat down and tried to figure out how the hell to do it... It's not horribly difficult apparently - it just takes a while. So, I'm uploading a subtitled version to YouTube just now, and it'll be finished shortly.

I hope it helps.
Oh, and I've never done this before, so I'm hoping I did the right thing by not including all the "Umm..." and "Uhh..."' pauses, or repetitions, like. "and I... and I do this thing...", etc.

Hate to burst your bubble, but rookie ships don't really present anything memorable. Sure, you'll get a major use out of it running through the first tutorial .... and that's about it.
One of the core appeals that pulls players into the game are the ability to customize their own upgrades - there's already a sheer choice and variations out there. Have you guys actually measured the avg time that genuine new players spend in their rookie ships? Consider this, having an ugly rookie ships will spur many players to "upgrade" as soon as possible. You've then succeded in getting the players to interact and immerse themselves into the game, out of sheer necessity for better aesthetics.
Plan things with more substance. This is just wasteful *shiny* fluff.

There is something I don't get... when I started this character, I flew the rookie ship for like 1 hour, then gleefully shifted to the much better regular T1 stuff the NPE supplied me through tutorials.
Also, when i started my first character ever, back in October 2010, I quickly fled the almost useless noobship i kept losing over and over (even if it was free). I have a much fonder memory of my first (and hardly earned) destroyer than about that silly noobship.
Noobships are like "get rid of it ASAP", so, why the effort making them look cooler?
I mean, WHO really flies a noobship long enough to name it or even think of it again once they give you that cool T1 frigate/destroyer/industrial, one hour into tutorials? EVE residents: 5% Wormholes; 8% Lowsec; 20% Nullsec; 67% Highsec. CSM 6: 100% Nullsec residents.
EVE demographics vs CSM demographics, nothing to worry about...-á |

Altarica wrote:Although I recognise the need to update art assets and maintain a consistent look & feel I am a little sad to lose the classic ship designs (I still prefer the old Scorpion for example).
I also think that the new look ships can sometimes collide with their flavour text (whats going to happen when the old warhorse that is the Dominix is redesigned?)
How about adding just a small addendum to this text on the re-done ships, something like "Redesigned in YC113"?
I like this idea.
The upgraded ships look good and they seem to have moving parts on them that will make em more "engaging" at first. I like that alot.
It seems to me the entire old ibis design was moved to the enginecell, which is a good way to remember the old workhorse. As usual it is clear that the best rookie ship is and always has been the Impairor who keeps his looks with a slight aggressive sleeker update.

Really. Most turret hardpoints are so ********. Base of the guns sticking out everywhere.
Also, redesign the Talos hardpoints. If it's meant to be a blaster platform, why does it look so insanely good with the largest railguns, and so bad with blasters? |

Shiny reaper is very, very bad. It needs about 600% more rust and scrapmetal on it. Well, actually more than 600% since 600% of 0 is still 0. I'm sure the minmatar are very concerned with the quality of their free ships. |

I have one friend who decided against continuing with the game because his first impression of space was the current ibis. I have two who didn't continue because they didn't really "get" the tutorial or didn't like having to wait the 12 or so hours at the beginning of the game to get into a rifter or other cool-looking frigate. New player experience is extremely important, and upgrading the noobships is a large part of that. Sure, older players tend not to care, we're rich and experienced and never use the noobships anymore, but it's surprising how important that small detail is to new players.
Another thing that would be great is a more active in-game music setup. If combat music was activated when a player was redbox'ed (by player or rat), for instance, I think it would add to the younger-player game experience. There's nothing quite as jolting as losing your precious new cyclone in a level 3 mission while the peaceful music of a relaxed new eden plays in the background. Again, not a big deal for older players because we spend most of our time on fleet comms anyway. |
