Maybe not so much in the empire you hug but in the hostile system I fly, you don't let your enemy setup camps for you while your screwing around in a spot with your opponent.
Think...
I fly mostly solo myself and I do ransom.. from time to time Ofcourse, common sense should be applied, i.e. ransoming in hostile system is no-no most likely; still, saying that "Ransoming is really a waste of time and requires time to ransom".. well, can't agree with that myself, but to each their own :P

Ransoms and 1 v 1's should always be honoured in my opininion.
However i tend to keep my ransoming to targets in deadspace... plenty of time to negotiate the best deal. Don't forget the ship scanner

Yes i know this but he wasnt red and didnt steal, we were just in the same area of nowhere(no structures/planets or moons) and he "aggressed me" with a warp scrambler and jammer and opened fire the few times i broke his jam i returned fire but i was certainly not the agressor and after 19mins concord had still not shown there ugly faces my question is how or why? is there an exploit there?

I for one ALWAYS honour ransoms, and should hope everyone else in my corp will too. However, I do not always offer ransoms, and smacktalk or other abuse directed at me may just make me a bit more trigger happy. Normally I will ransom most ships of cruiser size and above.
If I ever caught anyone not honouring ransoms, from my corp or not, I would probably do my best to pod them Would you trust something with teeth but no eyes!?!?!

These are the only two rules you need to learn. Btw all the people you see here saying they honor these two rules only make up about 10% of the eve pirate population. Dont think that just cause alot of pirates say they will that all will.

i had my honor, it got scamed from me. now my new rule is : if its less then 20bil i dont care if u scam it :)
anyway if someone exedently blows up that payed me i usaly feel sorry... for 0.1 second and afterwords the pirate in me start and then its WHATEVER !!! :P
but yeah ransom should be honored a bit. its still the main way for all pirates to get the big lootz. if every pirate didnt hold to it noboy would give any ransome :) --- Somebody needs a hug! |

Over all you will make more money as a pirate in this game ransoming than you will from mod sale. You have to consider the moving and constant docking involved in moving any loot from many kills over the simple solution of your wallet flashing from a ransom. So in the case of what happened to yourself it is worth noting the corps out there that do ransom and stick with there agreement with you and the vast amount that do not. The only time a ransom pirate may just take your ship down is if you are flying a Faction ship in low sec. --

If you develop a reputation for dishonouring ransoms, you'll very quickly find that it ceases to be an issue as people just won't pay your ransoms. It's not about ethics, it's about good business sense - is that killmail really worth cutting off a potentially lucrative revenue stream?
If you're gonna pop someone so you can loot their crap, do it - don't waste time trying to extort a few estra iskies out of them as well.

Edited by: flashfresh on 17/03/2008 19:44:09 I will always honour ransoms as would my corp, though there was one*****-up a month or so ago but that was because the ransom negotiations took too long and the guy was popped. No monies were exchanged however.
Anyway, why honour ransoms? For me, ransoms make up a small % of my intake per month. A destroyed ship, looted and salvaged usually makes me and my guys more. It's more about honesty and keeping your word. Yeah - we're pirates and such; and most of the time; someone can be crying out for ransoms and we ignore them and kill 'em just because we can.
On the occasions we *do* stop and ransom - then it's about our reputation. Yes, reputation. It takes a long time for a player and corporation to garner some level of recognition and reputation and respect. Months? Years?
All can be undone in a second.
Honesty and keeping your word keeps your reputation alive.

One person not honoring the ransom when offered does screw it over for everyone, afterall I now personally will never pay a ransom again, as i have no guarantee it will be honored and whats the point in losing iskies AND good modules, the 75mil i "paid" would of replaced the DG ballistic.
If i offer a ransom i will honor it. Oh and just so you know the +++e in question is monsterscorpse(monsterscorp) and narkogirl(npc nub) just in case they ever want to join you "honorable" pirate corps and dont want your rep bringing down.

In my experience, some time ago, I learned the one guiding principle. Not so much a rule as a guideline of sorts:
Be the kind of Pirate you would be Pirated by.
If you're gonna ransom his arse, and then kill him, you're just asking for him to call in his PvPer friends to hop you and drop you.
Trust me. Personal experience.

Always honor ransoms
Always honor 1v1
Always show sportsmanship and have a good attitude whether you win or loose.
If you get convo'd by a person you just blew up. Be courteous and respectful, unless the person is being a complete jerk. You never know when you might make a good friend or ally. In fact, after having a pleasant chat after a group of pirates blew me up, they all became my friends. Months later I fell into the life of piracy and joined their corp.

All the above will make you more money as a pirate than going against it and getting a bad rep. Only one thing i will not do anymore is 1v1. They are never honored 9 times out of 10. --

For X = 1 To TARGET() If TARGET(X) <> Dead Shoot TARGET(X) Else Loot TARGET(X) EndIf X = X + 1 Next X

People talk of taking time to ransom and its problems, for me time is not a problem. You set a price, give them 20 seconds to pay and if by then they havn't blow them up. If your jumped in that 20 secnods and die i say c'est la vie, they deserved it for such a quick response Please resize image to a maximum of 400 x 120, not exceeding 24000 bytes. Oh and, if i'm speaking on behalf of my corporation i'm probably not lying (as in, if I tell you we will escort your freighter in exchange for something, we actually will).
Barr that though, party in my wallet.
