Joshua Calvert	Posted - 2004.04.11 09:51:00 - [1] I'm thinking of upgrading my graphics card - I'm currently running an ATI Radeon Pro 9800 bu wish to upgrade to a Sapphire Radeon 9800XT 256MB. Does anyone have any experience of this card and any technical issues with Eve? Don't want to waste ú256 on a card that won't work on my fave game. LEEEEERRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

Tobias Raddick	Posted - 2004.04.11 11:13:00 - [6] The only problem I've seen with any ATi card and the Eve client is an issue of warp tunnel 'resetting'. You'll be warping along, and instead of the warp tunnel moving smoothly, it'll be fine for about 10 seconds, pause briefly, then start up again. As for the card, Sapphire are nice, but if I was choosing I'd go with the HIS 9800xt.
Shocky	Posted - 2004.04.11 11:46:00 - [7] Joshua, There are a few visual bugs but its not the fault of ATI, Its EVE. They manage to introduce visual bugs with every patch and provide no advanced options to fix the obvious ones. The R9800 will have the same IQ as a R9800XT. There practically the same card. Infact I use XT bios on my R9800Pro. Don't waste your money.

A XT is not much more than an overclocked PRO, it's definately not worth the money if you already have a 9800PRO. BTW, a few benchmarks to convince you to buy something more useful instead: UT2003 Call of Duty HALO Edit: Bah, crappy hotlink protection. Copy link -> new browser window/tab -> paste -> add a space after the .gif and it should work.

Thorne Semperti	Posted - 2004.04.11 16:39:00 - [13] To be honest there is no sense in upgrading from a 9800 pro to a 9800 xt, the difference whilst there, is not going to be at all significant and you would be better off waiting for the next line of graphics cards to be released. That said, in January i upgraded from a geforce 4 Ti4200 to a 9800xt, and there is of course a marked difference, and I have not had a single problem whilst playing Eve other than the flickering station/jumpgate textures which I assume is a game problem seeing as my old Nvidia card had it too. Your choice, of course, but seeing as you posted looking for advice, mine would be wait.

Arachnyd	Posted - 2004.04.11 23:39:00 - [15] Eh, if you have a 9800 Pro now you outta look into upgrading other parts of your computer instead. A brand new AMD 64 CPU would make EVE purr, and would an extra gig of RAM, both of with would cost approximatly the same amount as a 9800 XT. You won't see much of a performance increase upgrading from a Pro to an XT, but if you're determained to throw $400 at something, you can paypal it to me instead. If you're snappy about it, maybe i'll send you something resembaling a product in return!

I can't agree with that, my cpu isn't too hot, but when ragarding eve's performance the major bottleneck for me seems to be my ram, both size and speed. Personally I'd say it goes RAM > CPU > graphics card Naturally, josh, you should wait for 'pci extreme' if you've got that good a graphics card, people predict it really is quite close, as close as this summer, in fact, and along with it, will come new graphics cards, conveniently, pci extreme boards "can't" have an agp slot too... , tho you prolly know all of this already, but, point is, save your money because your next upgrade may very well require a new motherboard as well as a new graphics card.

Joshua Calvert	Posted - 2004.04.12 08:56:00 - [22] Well my systems specs are: Windows XP Pro AthlonXP 2700 1.5GB PC3200 DDR RAM ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Audigy 2 soundcard Thing is, the limitation is probably my motherboard because it it maxed out as far as cpu-type and amount of RAM goes. Guess I'll just save my pennies for 6 months and invest in an Alienware setup. LEEEEERRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

I play windowed (1152 by 864 or something like that) with moderate graphics settings and can't get above 25fps inspace regardless of what graphical settings I choose(it jumps to about 48fps in station) with cargo/scanner/chat windows visible. I think I'll play full screen for a bit and see what that does for my fps. LEEEEERRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

You're right - fps jumped up to 35fps inspace and 56fps in station when running full-screen as opposed to windowed (with same settings). As long as the fps is above 30fps in a game like Eve I'm not too concerned. Only First Person Shooters need really high frame-rates for mouse control, I guess. I don't understand why you're going to save up for a whole new setup, you have enough money to buy a really good motherboard now, a new setup wouldn't give you anything that much better than what you've got, apart from a motherboard, having said that, I'd still wait and see whether this pci extreme lives up to its expectations, but, if it doesn't come out by the end of the summer, I'd upgrade anyway. BTW, josh, what motherboard have you got? And, also, I don't think your current one is limiting you at all, yah, I don't know the speeds of it, but I doubt its that bad if you can use 1.5gb of pc3200 ddr ram.
