Hello pirates,
I am trying to probe down mission runners using snoop scanner probes (I am within 5au of the mission runner I want to track) and I am having a lot of trouble getting a lock.
So I was wondering if it is a lost cause to probe mission runners in deadspace or if there is an easier method of probing them.
Thanks for your time.

To elaborate further: I heard by scanning cosmic anomolies you can scan the deadspace pockets themselves. If this is true is it more feasible to use this method?

1) I don't -think- you can find mission deadspaces by scanning for anomalies...not 100% on that though
2)Scan for drones AND ships.
3) If you're within 4 AU of them, fit a scan probe launcher and use Quest probes corresponding to the target's sensor strength (Magno for gallente, grav for caldari, ladar for min, radar for amarr).

You can scan for ships using the explorer probes? Because those quest probes require the scan probe launcher instead of the recon probe launcher.
It would be awesome if you are right because this would make things a lot easier.
Also note that I do scan ship and drones.

Giving the quest probes a shot now - here's hoping it works. I am within 4au of this guy and i am eager to probe my first mission runner.

Yes. If you use the right quest probe, you'll have 250 points of scan strength, compared to 11 (lol) scan strength for the Snoop. Quest probes will always or almost always hit the target.

Quest probes don't find ships, they find deadspace complexes. Only scan probes can find ships. A Quest probe scans for different scan signatures that are linked to different types of plexes, not the different scanner types of ships.

See that was the problem I had with the help channel - differing arguments as to whether quest probes were allowed to track ships or not.
I am giving it a try. after all the disadvantage of quest probes is the much higher can time needed to use a scan probe launcher.

You don't know what you're talking about, sov. The only thing that affects whether you find something or not is the scan strength and the other stats displayed on the probe itself. There is no magical, hidden "Can find ships" or "Can find deadspace complexes" modifier on any probe.
I know this because I have found many ships using quest probes myself.

That's good to hear. I can't fathom how else to scan down a ship in deadspace with the 100 times penalty. A snoop has an effective scan strength of 0.2 when scanning deadspace.

I use spook recon probes and they pay the bills just fine, exploration probes are better but require extra BMs, placing and scanning time. Yes recon probes wont probe inside the deadspace very well but most of the time you can scan down ships sitting at the entrance or haulers looting de-spawned missions...and yes i do have a very good clue what im talking about. ------------------

The time invested getting a better place for your probe and the time is takes scanning with an explo probe is worth it. With a snoop you risk sitting probing for 20min. Chance is so low getting a hit, when you get it its more luck then anything else. Not getting a hit with an explo probe is more unlucky.
Sitting at the entrance wont give you a better hit then if they are inside the mission. The entrance is part of the deadspace. You can however get good hits should the target just warp out or in.
Of course if you can't use explo probes due to range you have to use 2nd best, snoops, fathoms.
Ive never actually seen a hauler looting wrecks in low sec, however do they even yield any isk worth probing/attacking?

Young player though I am, I have learnt that for scanning out people both types of probes have their use. One main distinction being if you are searching for specific people or just want to find anyone in a crowded system.

Preach it! Mission runners, that Quest nearby you is just someone exploring, never mind the fact you ar 15AU from the nearest planet.
You have nothing to fear, docking up would just be believing in silly forums rumors.

You still have about 11 times lesser chance finding something on each scan then someone who is using quests. Whats your scan time there 20sec? So you do about 7 scans same time someone do 1 explo probe scan. Think its easy to see whats more beneficial in the long run. Lets do some maths anyway.
Lets say explo probes has 50% chance finding someone. 1 scans, -> ~2min (130sec my skills) -> 50% finding target. 3 scans, -> ~6.5min -> 87.5%
Considering 50% chance on explo, snoops have about 4.2% chance finding the target. 16 scans -> ~5min -> ~50% chance finding target. 48 scans -> 16min -> ~87.5%
For some reason ppl think clicking scan more often increase their chances. You can boast about ure skills and kit, fact is someone with crap kit and skill will out probe you with explo probes. Have patience when probing waiting for that 2min probe is worth it if you are under 4 AUs.

and with drones out on the target u got 5x more chance of hitting a drone :) mission runners with drones out rule.
thing is with the quest u usaly are not in range. i use the spooks 20au covering a hole system in 1 probe. and the spook probe lives longer.

When you are spending time trying to get within 4 au, I'm already in the mission. You are virtually guaranteed to find the ship with a scan probe first scan, this is true, but on average I will be in missions faster using snoops. Not just because I donÆt need to get so close, but also because my snoops find ships fast. Out of the last 50 missions probed out I have only had to drop a second probe 5 times, so you could say 1 in 10. Most ships are picked up within 3 scans
As you well know its all about bookmarks. I have a ship set up with a sisters probe launcher and one with a recon launcher.
On paper scan probes look better, but just donÆt cut it unless you have 200+ bookmarks in each and every system in eve. Even then you can be struggling to get within 10 au far less 4 au.
As for the %, forget it. It donÆt always work that way. Dunno what causes it but I can put a spook out sometimes and catch the same ship everytime. Last night I got a hit on a drake 12/12 when looking for good bookmarks àààà. He was busy doing a ôworlds collideö

Yeah but same goes for explo probes if they got drones out, then a explo probe almost guarantee a hit.
I totally agree that recons have their use, and I carry both in my cargo hold. If you haven't been in the system much and dont have many BMs you need recon probes. Personally I would advice getting as many BMS in the busy systems as you can (its not like all systems in eve are mission runner paradise, there are systems commonly visited by mission runners), as it will increase the number of ppl you manage to probe out by a lot. However if you can easily get under 4AUs explo probes are better.
I can admit to not use recon probes often because every time I do it takes forever to locate someone. I remember one time probing for a BC (no drones) with a corp mate, he was about 4.5 Aus away. And we spent 30min probing never getting a hit. Unlucky for sure. Sure being lucky you can get hits more often, as I said getting a hit sooner with recons are more about luck, getting it later with explo is unlucky.
If you say that the chance to get a hit with recons is 10% keep in mind explo probes would still have about 10 times higher chance getting the hit.
A fathoms chance is about 25 times lower.
And Im actually surprised to see someone say that they manage to probe mission runners with the 20 au probes, that would have a 50 times lower chance finding the target then a quest. And 4 times less chance then a snoop.
I find it troublesome enough to probe someone with fathoms. Yes if they have drones it easier. I find that there is actually quite many mission runners that don't use drones though. So you can't rely on it.
