I am still new at this game. I have been playing less then a month and had my first player vs player last night. I am pritty sure the guy that attacked me was even less expiranced then me. Heres what happened.
I was on a run to pick up some ore that my corp was mineing. I was in my indy and on aproch to the star gate. abpot 10k away from it a frigate opens fire on me. At first I thought that there must be some kind of mistake. So I hesitated (What can I say, I'm still new)Then when I realised that he was serious I looked for the npc ships that were uasly around the gates. I didn't see any.
Now I have to say that this guy had to be new to the game becouse after all of this time of being shot I still had more then half of my shields. So I opened fired with my one gun. a light ion cannon. It only took 4 or 5 shots and his ship was distroyed.
Now I was done with him.(although for some reason my ship took it opon itself to fire on this guys pod. Not sure why it did. but it didn't stop until I jumped)
My question is this, did I handle this right. Or should I have done something diferent?

What you experienced is called a _free-kill_
Whem such happens don't hesitate to pod someone, hell, you should pod everyone you see for the next hour in joy.
Now go get them sentries skipper!

is there a down side to poding some one that attacked you? will the police come after you?

OK, so I'm new too but if you ask me (and you sorta did  ) if someone opens up on you then you pod em.

i wonder, what does a noob like you (not to flame, it are your words :)) in non-empire space. since this happend at a gate, there had to be no sentries around

I was in Aydoteaux. I think it is a 0.7 or 0.6 system. I have no clue whay there was no protection around. It could have something with that gun to do with that bug they menchioned in the news. (I really don't know)
Anyway I play there most of the time, and this was the first time I got attacked by a player.

It sounds likely that the sentries *did* open fire on him, destroyed his ship, and you ended up targetting his pod and killing him. Nothing to be ashamed of though... killing is fun

I think you are right. Because 4-5 shots with a light electron is no way going to pod a frig, except if he's low on shield and armor..
I think the sentries did him

The sentries did not fire because they were paralyzed by the "cuteness" of it all.
1st sentry gun:"Gladys look! that adorable noob ships is firing on that noobb frieghter"
2nd sentry gun:"Oh my stars, Mable, isn't that just the most darling thing you have ever seen?!?"
1st sentry gun:"haha, averging 2.1 points of damage per shot. reminds be of my eric when he was just 2."
2nd sentry gun:"Look, Mable, the indy just destroyed that Ibis!" (sincronized sigh) "hey arent we supposed to do something?"
1st sentry gun:"JUMPIN JIMINY CHRISTMASS, Gladys! Blast that cute noob indy into the stone age!
2nd sentry gun:"she jumped."
1st sentry gun:"CCP needs to upgrade us soon(tm)."
And that is EXACTLY how sentry guns talk.
