Sounds about right.
Gallente ships have crazy close range dps and have good drone boats. Domi is versatile (in a good way) and mega is crazy dps with a good tank. The hype has a great tank and greak dps.
Amarr is a great small gang to a good size gang race, since their dps is good because their optimal is amazing; also they have great tanks. Hence, in a small gang you can just sit there while the FC calls primaries and lock and shoot and most likely you will be hitting within your optimal (close range dps ships have to move to the target via mwd).
Matar is sort of inbetween these two races...sort of. But they have crap to good tanks with a few exceptions (broadsword and mael), but good dps close range with...umm...versatility and speed as their plus (means less as you increase to BS level especially if it's over a 3+ ship fight). Plus you have to train a lot more to do basically the same thing, since most of their t1 ships are armor tanks though some of the ships are also shield tanks. As you move into t2 ships the t2 resists are all on shields, even though some of them should be on armor (i.e. wolf). So you will eventually have to train both.
Caldari is more for pve, but they have some good pvp ships that have ok tanks and good dps, like a dps torp raven and blaster rokh. Missiles never miss so it's sort of afk mode, but missiles take travel time so they are not that desirable as you increase in group size since the primary will most likely insta pop with a group of 10+ or more (depending on ships) while the missiles might still be in flight time.
So my pick for pvp would be either gallente (flavor of the...at least 2 years), or amarr. Matar is ok too and has the repution as the "pvp" race, due to it's fast and agile ships, which is true until you hit the bc and bs levels where most battles are not 1v1 and so kiting or anything of that kind of strategy is going to work a lot less (unless you are nano-ed, but that isn't matar ships per se but a nano-thing, which the devs are looking to eventually nerf).
Anyways, I know many might disagree. Not saying I am right per se, but that is how I see it.
