Lets take a look at history, I read a study on MMO games and wish I could find the link to post hee.
- UO, almost whent under because of PVP In there early days they where PVP everywhere but the citys. This lead to a mentatlity of most players to go najked into the wild so that when you died you loas as little as possible. I rember going out to harvest wood with nothing but a loin cloth and a Axe. Got ganked more time than not, and for what? Wood? 90% they didn't even take the axe off me. UO did a study and found that for every 1 griefer they lost 10 paying customers.
- EQ, has half mill players (or there abouts) and doesn't allow unrestricted PVP. They have gotten a huge number of users. They have a 2 full PVP server and 20 non PVP servers. Which do you think people like? They are effectivly voteing with there $15 a month.
- DAOC, I consider this the best of both world and the corect way of doing PVP IMHO. They have extensive NON PVP areas that a player can work and build up there character before venturing into the RVR area. Once in the RVR area you can not comunicate with the Enemy. They for all intense and purposes VERY good NPC's, and as there is no peniltys for loseing in RVR and everything to gain it is popular. Still I know alot of people that are turned off of DAOC becuse of the PVP. They have a moderate Customer base, not as big as EQ but still growing where EQ is not.
- Shadow Bane. Great game, cool skill sets, neat idea of Guild vs Guild wars. Griefers are ruining it like they did UO. No one likes to spend hours of time working on there character, training skills, to have a group of people that you have no hope of killing come buy and take all you work away. The argument from those that like PVP is "If you don't like it play something else" well the players are again voteing with there $15 a mont and playing something else.
I didn' last the free month, joined a guild and we go our city up. we where working on walls when the uber guild got bane circles. they then proceded to go thru and wipe out every other guild that didn't have bane circles yet. They started with the next furest along guild and worked there way down the list.
I am not going to pay $15 a month to get beaten down every time I try to have a nite of fun game play.
Except for Shadow Bane I have played ecah of the above games for over a year. I believe for PVP to work there must be a area where PVP is not a viable option. this lets the player base build up to where they feel they have fighting chance. DAOC did this with there RVR realms. you need to be 15 to go to the first battle ground. and it is limmited to lv 15-20 this means you will always be fighting someong that is near your level of character and skill. The battle grounds progress to lv 35 where you are tossed into the main RVR. Many players go back to PVE untill they hit 45 and then head back out into the RVR. Like I said it is no fun to be playing and get One-shoted by somone 15 levels higher than you.
And the purpose of games is FUN. so in the end I like the way CPP is makeing the empire space. It is a safe area to work and build up, before venturing out into the unknown beyond. I would even support the implmentation of a reimbersment option that if you get killed in Empire space that you get everything you lost back when the pirate was killed.
I believe the typical griefer is the kind of person that like going out and killing others for the shear plesure of dominating another person. He is not in it for the challenge, he is in it for the suffering he inflicts on others. In real life these people are scorned, and disliked, the same as in game. but in games they are ruining the fun of others.
So in closing call me a carebear if you like but I like PVP when it is my choice to persue it and am aware of what I am risking. If I am trying to earn enought ISK for a new ship I don't want to be jumped by some nut job.
When I want to engage in PVP I will head out 0.0 space and go hunting, It won't be with my best ship or equipment. I will hold that back for dealing with the griefers. You cn make moe money with a cruiser sucking rocks in a 1.0 system than getting killed in PVP. so I am going to mine with my crusier and make many , many ISK case ISk are power in eve.
