I'm looking towards getting a freighter and the hardest thing besides the cost seems to be which one is best? Is it likely that a freighter will need the capacity of the charon or is the armour of the Providence best, maybe the little bit of extra speed that the fenrir has is good. I ask this also as they are not all going for the same price with the providence being the darer of them at this time.
Your thoughts are appreciated!

Charon has the biggest cargo hold but honestly the differences between the four are not all that noticeable. I have a maxed (L5) Charon and when moving stuff it turns out I need to make as many trips as my mates...just my last trip I am 1/4 full where they might be half full.
The Charon is also the slowest of the lot (least nimble to align). Again not a huge difference but there.
As for defense frankly if you get in that position you are screwed anyway. Again the differences are very small as a practical matter and dreaming up a scenario where one would live where another would die (everything else being equal) is stretching things.
Bottom line I would train whichever you are nearest to skillwise and you'll rarely if ever know a difference. For "best" then the Charon for its extra cargo. For best looking Providence. Saying the Minmatar one is faster is just a joke. Yeah it is faster but they are freighters and all miserably slow...even the fast one. I doubt you would ever notice and appreciable difference.
That or choose the line for whom you think has the best T2 Transports and decide on that basis (Impel is very nice). -------------------------------------------------- "Of course," said my grandfather, pulling a gun from his belt as he stepped from the Time Machine, "there's no paradox if I shoot you!"

All four can carry an outpost egg at freighter I. Since most of the good spots for setup an outpost are already taken, or under heavy alliance control, that doesn't count for much. My alt intends on driveing a fenrir in time mainly because the prowler transport isn't far away then.
Pick the one that fits best with your long term plans and go from there.

Minmatar or Caldari as industrial 5 is biggest prereq for transport ships. I personally prefer minmatar transports as they have nice shield resists right at vanilla, caldari is good too.
On Gallente and Amarr increasing survivability (effective hp in empire) is done at the price of cargo hold. |

After the agility boost caldari recived a few patches ago this is no longer the case.
Effective agility (lower is better): Fenrir: 51.25 Charon: 51.6 Providence: 56.25 Obelisk: 58.75
This takes both mass and inertia modifier into account. The Charon is almost as agile as the Fenrir. ---------------------------------------- A Guide to Scan Probing in Revelations |

Charon is the best one, but the fenrir looks by far the best. --- -The only real drug problem is scoring real good drugs |

Caldari = largest cargo Amarr = prettiest Gallente = ugliest Minmatar = quickest (apparantly no longer so in aligning but quickest in m/s)

With the exception of the Crow, Raptor and Shuttle, the agility multiplier on all Caldari ships has been reduced. Caldari ships are now more agile.

I went for the Charon for its looks. Haven't yet found a reason to buy one though

My thoughts...
Caldari - cargo Gallente - more defense, so you can scream for help an extra 15 seconds as you cry, lengthening your pain Minmatar - Sandcrawler of space Amarr - Giant mechanical roach
Honestly, they all do the same thing... move slow and haul a fair chunk of stuff, all equally vulnerable. Personally, I'd go for the one you want to stare at, because once you spend 30 orso days training and a few hundred mill, you better love the way it looks... specially if you're going to be staring at it for a few minutes per system warp in some cases.

Charon is fine. the only disadvantage is you must flat pack everything but it's still a good ship and when you're done with it, it fits nicely in your wallet. ------- I came, I saw, I drank all the beer! |

And if you are interested in Jump Freighters... notice that the cargo capacity varies as well. However, the fuel usage per ly is proportional to cargo capacity. Rhea has most cargo, uses most fuel per ly.
I guess this is CCP's effort to make hauling m3 at the same price between JFs. They forgot to include inconvenience factor of additional cyno fuel/ship cost (in case it gets popped) in the calculation though if you need to make extra trips in lesser cargo JFs.
