I was wondering how a cruiser would defend itself against a first strike made by an agressor.
For example a kestrell armed with cruise missiles.
Seems some "noob would be pirates" are asking around to get such surprise attacks off and i would hate to loose a cruiser to it.
I figure if i can survive that first attack the kestrell is going to be toast to the combined might of all my turrets going off in his/her direction.
What possible defense are there anyway to inbound missiles?

Defenders, or my personal favorite, smartbombs.

The first attack at best will crop your sheilds but unless you dont have a sheild booster or the kesterl is doing hit and run attacks (in which case you can run) you should be able to lock him up and fire.

Edited by: Von Schnopp on 13/04/2004 09:02:57 A Kestrel with a Sensor Booster can lock and engage you as far away as 80km and farther so don't expect to get your guns within range easily.
If you get launched upon, send them the same medicin as fast as you can - either they will try and outfly your cruise missiles, which will have them exceed their maximum targeting range and their missiles will go dumb.
That or they warp away, which will have their missiles lose lock as well.
If there are multiple Kestrels ganging up on you, well, pick a destination and warp out of there.

You figured wrong. Most people who fly frigates in PvP do so for their speed, these babies fly faster than cruise missles and your turrets can't keep track of them so unless you have some crazy tracking speed, or he slips up (not using MWD's) you won't hit him once.

The best defense against frigate gankers is a webber and a MWD, or warp core stabs. If you web a frigate, its dead.

What Shamis said, if your in a cruiser with a drone bay launch them asoon as the frigate gets close. Against 8 heavies a frigs either got to run or die. Mostly harmless |

I still don't have a clue what the whole debacle earlier was about.Red Core are harmless, we don't pose a treat to anyone. If its money you're after, i suggest you declare war on rich carebears instaid of poor ones.

Thankzz for the replies.
What i did not realize when posting is that they would probably launch from far away ... which should give me time to warp out and back in to fight on my own terms.
Another thing i learned from your answers is that the missiles loose target when the owner is either away or destroyed.
That gives a few options to think about when designing a defense strategy
Makes me wonder if it is possible to manually outmaneuver incoming missiles. I.e. starting pursuit while missiles are still inbound.

Turn your sound up. Missiles make an un mistakable sound. Once you here it you will know.
I know it donÆt make much since to me either "space being a vacuum and all".
Never the less they still make a sound. But hell you should have noticed a lock unless you were afk.
If you just arenÆt ready just warp.

Use elite frigate, you will have speed and somewhat firepower there. You can do 3k. in no time.

SB's are good, defenders are kinda screwy and I dont trust them.
The other night I had several interceptors attack my BB, and I basically just hit the SB every time a missile got sorta close. If you fire your own back at them, it makes them keep their distance.. If they are really stupid, they die :) ______________________
