Just got this for ú5 seems a bargain and very atmospheric despite it crashes on the first 5 mins on the very first level when i leave that guy who gives missions. Alse it seems quite a resource hog.
My dual 3gig E6850 with GT8800 512mb and 3.3 gig system struggles to play it on 1600x1050. I have to drop the settings down to 1024x768. I dont mind but the thing crashes my NVd4 ( gfx ) driver like hell and well, its unplayable.
Anyone with a similar experience?

Worked just fine for me.
You just picked up the best FPG/RPG since Deus Ex and System Shock 2. Hope you get it working, because its incredibly awesome.

get the patches onto it and it becomes a bit more stable than a 16-year old emo with a straight razor.
Damn good game... exceptional gameplay, fantastic storyline. I'll not give away spoilers, as it's well written... but I will suggest as you play it, to remember to keep checking the PDA as there's a fair few plot parts that lurk in there without any prompts... first time I played through I missed some of those, and did'nt get to the proper end.
Anyone know when Clear Skies is due out? :)

I thought it was a complete sack of ****, to be honest. Here's the start of the game, here's the first encounter, oh look, you're dead.
As cheap as it was, it got uninstalled very quickly. I didn't think much of the graphics either.

Come on, STALKER isn't even that hard; its not nearly as aggravating as System Shock 2 was.

Sorry for failing to complete it in 20 minutes. Unfortunately I don't play 1st persons all day long, and the first impression this game gave was that it sucked.
I may try again at a later date, but I'm not that fussed really.

I think it was pretty substandard. A for effort with the attempt at making what Bethesda are going to fail doing with their Fallout, but a C+ for the actual result.
I'd love to have seen it as open-ended as they first meant to design it.

I completely agree mate.
Played it for quite a while to give it a chance and see if I could start to enjoy it, but failed to do so.
Then again I also thought Deus Ex was an incredibly overrated pile of fail which I didn't at all enjoy playing.

Awesome game, just be sure to keep many save files, don't just use the same one over and over. In my first game I managed to completely break the story pregression by doing x18 mission out of order. If this happens your only chance is a save game prior to running x18 or a complete restart. The bug is present in latest version and is caused by a door which is supposed to be locked untill certain objectives are complete not being locked at all. I had to do complete restart myself.

STALKER was kinda tricky to get into, but it was a good game that got better as it went on. I for one cant wait for Clear Sky next month.

is there an actual release date for clear sky that's got any chance of being met? Q1 '08 for the entire thing felt too optimistic for me, particularly given Stalker's... shall we say extensive development time...
I'm still expecting delays.

Steam has it listed under "coming soon to steam", and it says May 2008.
Edit: I started Stalker once, got a fair way into it and then a patch came out which (iirc) wouldn't work with old saves. That and the excruciating loading times meant I didn't stick at it. I intend to have another go at it next time I upgrade. - Originally by: Miss Anthropy Real life friends are over-rated and real doll's are just sad. Companion cube is by far the best choice.

My main qualm with stalker was the crap damage done by the hand gun, fortunately there is a mod to fix it.
As far as games go, I thought it was a bit of a let down after keeping tabs on it for years. There are far worse games out there and for ú5, you can't go wrong.

Stalker is an amazing game. There are plenty of tweaks to remove the annoying loadtimes (command line tweak... /no_prefetch IIRC), the atmosphere is the best you will find in an FPS. Ever. I mean that quite seriously. X16 has to be one of the only times a game has ever scared me.
Its not quake, its not doom. Treat it more like Oblivion with guns, in russia, than your standard FPS.

On a side note, stalker is one of the few games that has put the wind up me. I was mowing down a load of guys when one popped out seemingly out of nowhere. I managed to accidentally swipe a few things off my desk whilst shrieking in a girly manner.
My wife laughed heartily

Nice game, if it wasn't so 'unpolished' shall we say.
Best experience: Having a mutant boar follow me into a hostile encampment... I hide and have the pleasure of hearing the boar gore all but one of the hostiles.
That, and the first time you meet a Controller.

I bought it when it first came out, but sadly my machine wasn't up to scratch. Playing it on a friends brand new machine was like a walk in the park compared to the days on end I spent sneaking around trying to avoid combat to get to the third area in the game since I couldn't kill ****
I was though kinda disappointed it wasn't completely open and free like maybe GTA is, but perhaps an FPS will come along like that inspired by Stalker

It was originally planned to be like that, but time / money meant they had to scrap the idea for the time being. Rumor has it, Clear sky is bringing the devs one step closer to their dream of a fully open zone 族---族

Didnt like stalker much, too awkward to play, got as far as the second zone and then got killed 10 times in a row trying to do some stupid mission and just uninstalled it out of frustration, but I'm gonna give it another go down the line.

Such a great game... just remembered why I love it so much... you get vodka, it makes you drunk, then you run around and try to fight everything while the world spins.

well im amazed.
How the hell was this game released? The amount of bugs it has is astonishing. My ninja PC cant run the Dynamic lights at 1280x1024. I have to use the 2nd option.
Its crashes so bad it nukes my nv4 display driver to hell. Still I can see it has potential.
