Introduction
Maelstrom Crew is today announcing our retirement as a mercenary corporation. In the 18 months since our inception we have successfully completed over 50 contracts that have led us to fight over most of the galaxy. With our final contracted target admitting defeat and reforming a new corporation in Blue Alliance it is time for us to find a new path.
Merc life is an exciting career, but at it's best requires it to be played at a high intensity. Real life changes as quickly as the Eve political map, and with our leaders no longer able to find the time they once were we are finding ourselves unable to maintain the high levels of organisation that we once were. Rather than dwindle to ineptitude we have decided to find a more relaxing style of combat.
History
The Early Days:
The corporation was formed by a shadowy caldari agent by the name of Wulfyn who was operating around Ammatar space. Losing a card game to a young Minmatar pilot with an extremely well polished head he had found himself short of cash. In order to settle the debt he took this bald fellow into his employment, and set about giving him odd mercenary jobs.
The early days were glorious with a small band of inexperienced pilots roaming the space-scape in tech 1 fitted frigates searching for kills. The corp grew to a respectable membership level of a couple dozen, although our policy of global recruitment from inception gave us a tradition of fighting outnumbered in small gangs.
In addition to numerous small time contracts we decided to give ourselves a tougher challenge. Searching around Metropolis lowsec we located the meanest looking corp we could find and wardec'd them. At first Naughty 40 were outraged by our insolence, but a combination of us explaining our motivations, and a willingness to engage them no matter the odds led to some good fights between our corps. We only won one engagement of the entire war, and at the end lost our entire fleet to a fight against a single skilled Scorpion pilot (he was in structure dammit!!), but it was great fun and our corps became good friends.
The turning point for us came in November 2006. At that point we were still seeking to increase our reputation to get larger contracts, and although our membership was very stable I knew that if we did not achieve the step up soon then we would fragment. Luckily we were contracted to wardec Multiverse, and so we relocated up to Dodenvale. We've always sucked at the first engagement, but later that day a small fleet of ours defeated an enemy fleet twice our size on their own HQ station. The rest of the war consisted of us picking off their ships as the moved around their home systems, and despite the intervention of Otter Pop eventual they surrendered due to the help of The Devil's Rejects and Dark Excession.

The Core Contracts:
Over the next few months we managed to secure and complete a number of core contracts that were key to our development. We learnt to stack the boring contracts across timezones so that we had 23/7 combat. Seeing the success of the corp a number of friends and previous associates joined the corporation, expanding our membership to unprecedented levels for what we had expected. We fought a large number of good missions over this time, culminating in a contract offer against Antigo Dominion.
At this time we did not have the numbers to take on such a unit. Although we certainly had the desire and skill we felt that we would not be able to guarantee value for money when we could just be blobbed into submission. The answer came from some old friends of ours. When we first started off we became involved in an unofficial group of mercs called the Cartel, alongside The Devil's Rejects, Dark Excession, Final Vendetta and The Phoenix Mercenaries. The relationship had caused El'Hith, then CEO of PIXE2 to form an alliance, inviting the cartel membership alongside Stain based friends AIL to join. We had turned down the offer to join, as I felt we were not ready to move to that level, but this contract provided the perfect opportunity.
This contract was hugely enjoyable, as we based ourselves just 2 jumps from their home system, just off the anchor point between 0.0 entry points. Our mission was primarily to take down small POS and secondary to engage and destroy their fleet. However our first POS attempt was interrupted as AD allies The Core Collective supported them in the defence. We warned them to not get involved, but they did so anyway, and so after consulting with the client we wardec'd them as well. Ironically TCC ended up losing more ships to us than AD. The highlights of the war were taking on a dread bait outside a station, and then defeating a combined AD and TCC fleet, alongside killing both TCC Thanatos and Moros class capital ships. Shortly after our contract AD reformed under a single corp (Wild Hunt) and moved to 0.0 space. At the end of the contract we left The Cartel.
Full details alongside some stories of our encounters can be found here. (Please note this website is out of date as we are in the process of migrating).

The Golden Summer of '07:
The summer of '07 saw the busiest period in our history, as we ran for 13 weeks of contracts without a break. In this time we had 5 extremely enjoyable contracts, all starting with Rough Necks Alliance. Like Antigo Dominion this consisted of us engaging a much larger alliance in their home space, but this time we decided to go it alone. The war culminated in the single greatest fight our corp has participated in, as we engaged a RN fleet twice our size and with their carrier assigning fighters from the protection of their POS. Outnumbered 2-1 it took 3 waves of their fleet to eventually break ours, forcing our last few ships to disengage and jump clear. We killed 22 ships and around 400m isk of fighters for the loss of 12.
We followed this contract up with a war against fellow mercenaries LSD. A much tougher challenge fighting against fellow professionals, and a hugely enjoyable time. There were 2 highlights of the war for us, the first being the Kaaptenen Rope-A-Dope. In the first night we allowed a superior LSD fleet to chase us from Amarr back up the pipe towards Jita to see how far they would go. Two nights later we allowed them to do the same thing, but in secret we had reloacted our own battleships to Kaaputenen. Using a stabber to keep them busy we switched ships and caught them on the gate, destroying their 5 BS and BC fleet (including a CNR) for the loss of 1 BS. The second highlight was the maiden flight of the MCS Yarrvester, the corporations first capital, a Thanatos class carrier. Sending her into the enemy fleet first we again won the battle, although a node crash at the end saw an enjoyable fight come to an abrupt conclusion.
2 wars against Antagonistic Assembly (the latter of which forced our pos attack to be halted by an AIL led Chaos Incarnate capital fleet in system) and one against FEAR alliance brought about a heavy summer, and we decided to take a couple weeks off in September to recharge. These contracts also saw us become good friends with Molotov Coalition, who'd we'd met fighting Rough Necks but not worked alongside. Great job in the alliance tourney guys - I lost 10m betting on you! Our numbers were boosted again as The Devil's Rejects announced the sad news that they were disbanding, with many of their members merging into MCrew.
Mournival:
Looking for something to keep us fresh an old friend of mine contacted me saying he was forming a new corporation called Damned Legion. This was good timing for us as we had just finished fighting Ka-Tet in their own back yard and had been hired to harass KOS in their system of DZ-6. With more hostiles about and the proximity of the main war front (which meant potential ganks from both defending Goons and roaming BoB) we sought additional numbers, and D-L joined us for this fight. Our corps worked well together, and so we decided to formalise the relationship by founding a mercenary alliance, inviting fellow friends Kaminjosvig, and later old friends Dark Excession.
These were some fun times to be an MCrew pilot, with a contract against Crimson Alliance followed by a great war with Hydra. Simultaneous to our attack we noticed that they had also been targetted by KIA, Omniscient Order and Murder Death Kill. Someone clearly wanted them dead! I was away shortly after this contract relocating in RL to a new job, so I only caught the second half of our contract against REPO. Enjoyable fights against strong opponents.
That was our last big effort with the alliance. Damned Legion had gone inactive, and with that much of what we had originally signed up for. We decided that it was time for us to move on and find our own way, leaving Mournival in Nat's safe hands. Bolstered by The Movement, as well as some other old friends and enemies, MRNVL remains a force to be reckoned with.

The final days:
Our last contract was against a new corporation called Virikar. It was during this time that we really realised that the intensity of our life was beginning to show in our performance. Our results against VK are not especially impressive, but like many other groups they rightly only engage when they have superiority. We did however manage to shut them down in that they dropped their wardec and were getting no kills except against us. Today they announced the closing of their Eve branch, with some mebers switching out to Virakorp. With the conditions of our contract met it was time for us to hang up our merc gloves.
Credits
Firstly I'd like to thank all those members of MCrew past and present. I'm proud to have fought alongside every one of you, and hope you are having a great time in Eve wherever you now are. I'd especially like to thank Chantrelle, Eva Wellington and Reelism, who have been with me from the beginning of this journey. Looking forward to more great times ahead!
Thanks to all the clients - no matter what your motivations. You allowed us to be the good guys saving the unsavable as well as the the evil griefers sticking the knife in when it most suited you. Both sides were great fun to play.
Thanks to our friends. All the Cartel corps were great fun to fight alongside, as were Mournival. Thanks to those who were in N40 before their corp was stolen and they were forced to leave. Cheers Molotov you bunch of drunken bastards. Bring a few more dreads next time and we'll bag ourselves a mothership :)
Finally thanks to all of our opponents. Without people shooting back this would be one really lame game. We have the greatest respect for you all, and even when fighitng you wished you as much success as our contractual obligations would allow ;) Thanks also to the pirates of Tama and Rancer who gave us something to do between contracts. You've given us some great memories!
What next?
Well we're looking for something to do (answers on a postcard). Most likely we'll be taking a few weeks off shooting people in lowsec and deciding our next move. Although we have retired as mercs if there are any merc groups out there that want to subcontract any big fights out, then we will be happy to listen to offers. There are a lot of pirate corps recently switching to become mercs - maybe it's time for a merc corp to become pirates...
ps this post would have been shorter, but C&P has been so lame lately I thought you might like a long read.

Was fun times.
Last week I actually deleted a screenshot I took during our war Dexion, was of our little gate camp inty, Rapier and Rupture and when your single figure gang jumped in CCP suplied the usual service and the node died. I ended up over 1000km away still attacking until the client realised. Your one of the few during my MCrew time that I had the game time and a working PC to actually shoot .
Can read the MCrew report on the war here which also contains a link to the MCrew KB at that time and a AAR of one of the bigger fights at the end of the war. -

What ?! Im member since the creation of corp, been director, diplomat, co-CEO and CEO and I can assure you whatever you heard is pile of crap. I can think of only one person that fed you this bullshlt. Because he did shlt all and was just whining all the time then he left, on his own. Four other older members left because they wanted to do other stuff (their words). At least I know now I was right about that one particular person. Thanks for confirming that. |

Yeah Commoner that was him. I was just idling in vent chatting with some of our guys as we lazily patrolled around Anckee, then I saw commander nick drop through all the channels. He got to us and just screamed "we've tackled a dread, come quick". No-one ever moves as quickly as when you have a cap ship tackled... ;)

Yeah that was a great campaign to fight in, I have some very fond memories of that war fighting with you guys. Didn't you get the tackle on the Moros Nick? Iirc you spent hours wandering around in your vaga just keeping tabs on the enemy fleet, waiting for them to make a mistake like that and then just pouncing on them.

Oh man - if i thought C&P would have coped with more text I would have definitely written more about you guys. We were between contracts and decided to raid Tama for a bit, stirring up VMF Blacksheep back in the days when nano-phoons were sick! Then you infiltrated us with Jambo, and soon after Parabellum and I think it was a corp called Night Lords or something had joined in decing us. Soon after we got hired to fight alongside Beagle in the Forsaken Skills campaign, which saw us dec The . Forsaken, Skill Level Six and Eve United Directorate. That totalled us to 6 active wars, the most we have ever had at any one time. Was really interesting to be hunting down contract targets but always having to keep one eye over our shoulders for you guys hunting us!
Love fighting with VMF & Parabellum - we win some and we lose some, but you guys always bring it no matter what. The rate my guys are going since I removed the rule to keep sec status above -2 we could be joining you as dirty pirates soon

Nope, I grabbed the Thanatos after we got it probed out. He deserved to die for fitting Gist shield mods...I have some fraps kicking around of that fight, I think. Also, I couldn't help but to fight those guys for hours on end. I had the time during that contract, and they just wouldn't stop undocking frigate after cruiser after frigate. Those guys were awesome.
