I've been trying to make some friends start playing eve, but they complain about having to wait for skills to finish, in contrast to just bash critters until they reach a higher level. And I can see understand that if I want to get cracking on the exploration missions, it's dull waiting for 30min for my basic skills to finish to then get started. What I propose is that we have a line of missions, either the arcs or the current starter missions, rewarding players with small amounts of unallocated SP to invest in skills they need to do certain activities in eve. For new players, SP equaling a day worth of training is a huge difference.
I'm opposed to the idea of buying sp, but encouraging new players to try out different playstyles of eve would perhaps make them stick around longer and ideally, become subscribers. alternatively, is having basic achievements, like "make 1mil isk by trading", "scan down a sig", "kill another player", "win eve" etc etc. The impression of needing lots of SP to be able to play this game at all needs to be dealt with, hopefully this could be a start.

How many people buy/download a game then quit after a day? :/ From what I remember of the starting part of Eve the skills required to run the tutorials and starter missions finish in the time it takes to get used to the interface and start learning some of the basic game mechanics.
Also, when it comes to skill training and player retention it can be somewhat counter-intuitive. In some games, you might play for the first time, not particularly like it, and quit. Eve, however, has a certain way of inspiring players to aim for something and they will generally continue playing until they have acquired it. By which point they've usually found a new ship they want to start training for, and it starts all over again in a vicious cycle that one day ends with them popping scrubs in an officer fit tracking titan.
Giving away SP also doesn't really seem to address the issue with perception of SP requirements at all. In fact it kind of reinforces it. -áhttp://i.imgur.com/aWNfM.jpg |

I think they may have gotten rid of that when they removed learning skills ans gave evryone a flat stat boost instead. |

Oh, hey, look. It's THIS idea again.
no, No, NO. How many times do we have to explain to you people that turning EVE into another wow clone is NOT a good idea?
The impression of needing lots of SP to play the game is just flat out wrong, and forcing us to grind for more SP is not going to change it. Jump in a tackle frigate and go play in RvB or something. |

You know what encourages new players? Older players giving them advice and helping them figure things out and giving them some idea of what they can do and aim for. Skill points won't keep them interested for that long if they sit in the NPC corps with no clue what to do next. I've been helping a bunch of new players over the last month, many of whom have joined my corp and are now figuring out the aspects of the game they like the most.
Some of them have told me they've given EVE a try before and didn't have much idea what to do or where to go, but with the advice and help I've provided they're finding it much more interesting and are now capable of doing more than if they'd been sat in the NPC corp just trying to figure it all out for themselves.
If people want to keep new players why not try this yourself instead of asking CCP to give bonus SP? That's more in the spirit of EVE being player driven. WoW holds your hand until end game, and gives you a cookie whether you win or lose. EVE not only takes your cookie, but laughs at you for bringing one in the first place... |

CCP keeps talking about the New Player Experience and Player Retention, but honestly, most peopel i've gotten to try out EvE didn't give a rat's ass about the tutorial missions and the "new player experience". and a majority of them, 6 months later, will even say the ONLY REASON they stuck around was because they found a cool bunch of older players who were willing to help them and teach them the ropes, something no amount of tutorials could ever do. |

In addition CCP did have the cerebral accelerator as a promotion at some point and also provided as a bonus with the commisioned officer box. There's probably still some available under contract.
tbh, not sure if you can still buy the box set. Bounty Hunting for CSM 7

Not sure about buying the box set, but I've seen the cerebral accelerators up on contract for prices that are a bit outside the range of new players, and seeing as they're useless to older players they're just scams. They're not useless if you're buying them to train up your new alt. |

That's about the only way they could be of use to a character that's over a month old, as something for the alt, although looking at some of the prices I'd prefer to buy them a set of +3's, those would last longer than a few weeks at least.

In my opinion the thing that needs to change is that start up video we all saw the very first time we signed into EVE. You know the one...
... the "you are immortal" spiel.
I think THAT needs to be changed to a fully intuitive quick, down and dirty tutorial of the user interface. it will show pictures and videos of different situations and such in EVE and show a 3-d picture of the eve universe as seen from the point of view of the map. Basically the map but in a 3-d picture that will wizz by planets and such and show the different statistics for that day. Like the political lines, and sovereignty tiles and such. The number of pod kills and such. Basically a down and dirty overview of New Eden as a whole.
Just a thought. |
