Is there money in buying cheap BPO's in invention, like rigs, then trying to invent off them for a T2 BPC and selling it,or does the cash come from actually building t2 ships and such?

Modules and ships. Rigs are not profitable bcos of advanced rig component prices and negative ME levels from invention. It is not reasonable to invent rigs.

Most of the cash also comes in the building, since it also requires specialised skills and materials, there is a small market for invented BPOs, mostly other inventor/builders who know what it costs to make and won't pay alot more than that. Most people can also invent far more BPCs than they have slots for.
Look at the prices on contracts of BPCs and work out for yourself what they cost to invent and you can see if there is profit to be had. As mentioned, Rigs are not great, almost all of the cost in making them is in materials, not the invention.

Rigs can be invented for profit, but only those that are in more demand than there is supply of ME0/PE0 BPCs.
With the top ME decryptor you can get a ME-1/PE-1 (1 run), which uses 10% more materials than the found BPCs with the falling datacore prices there are a few rigs that are worth it.
But money is mostly in modules.
Just see what there is demand for, do the calculations and you can make money. Lots of other activities that are more profitable though.

I have made calculations for several modules (using MEEP), according to which the profit margins are extremely slim. Now, I have tried a Light Neutron Blaster II, Manticore, Golem and some other things I do not remember anymore. Sometimes there was even a negative profit. I guess there is no way a non-dedicated person can compete with individuals having multiple accounts pumping datacores and people 'mining their own minerals for free'.

The issue are always people 'mining their own minerals for free', 'getting the datacore for free from agents' and 'building the T2 component for free at my POS'.
