I'd like to know what helps me get into warp faster? As it is now, It takes me a long time to initiate a warp- plenty of time for my newbie ass to get blown to bits by a pirate. What can I train so that I warp sooner and have a decent chance of escaping danger?

under Spaceship Command: Spaceship Command / Rank 1 and under Navigation: Evasive Maneuvering / Rank 2
these skills give a bonus (2% & 5%) to a ships agility.
agility lets you align faster. (there are Inertia Stabilizer moduls for low slot that give same kind of bonus) -- my current auctions |

If you are trying to dodge pirates in 0.0 then you need to be using a mwd.
After you jump into a system and are cloaked, have the mwd set on manual and turn it on for one cycle once you tell your ship to warp to another location (hopefully using instajump bookmarks).
As soon as the mwd turns off (4 to 5 seconds) you'll be warping.
Do not use afterburners!! They take way too long to turn off and you won't warp until they do.
pssst, here is a little secret that PC rats don't want people to know about. A 1mn mwd will fit on any indy and will get you warping away from the gate in the same 4 to 5 seconds!! If you have a lot of cargo expanders equiped and are really slow, you can even use two 1mn mwd's to get you to warping speed fast.

Sweet, thanks for the tips!
So, when I jump into a new system: 1. select location to warp to, and warp 2. turn on MWD
and I will warp much faster? Awesome!
Now, why is it important to have bookmarks? I mean, you don't warp faster just because you have a bookmark right? Just that you may lose a fraction of a second if you choose the destination from the lists, right? I never understood this part...

Instajump bookmarks don't help you to warp away from a gate.
They help you warp into one.
As standard you warp in at 15km from a gate and then have to travel 12.5km until you get to the 2.5km jump activation range. If you have a bookmark set at 12 to 17 km on the otherside of the gate, then you will warp in at 15km from the bookmark. This should then put you almost on top of the gate and within the 2.5km jump activation range.
You save that 12.5km of travel and the risk of getting ganked. --------------------------------------------- Engineers motto; If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks it needed replacing anyway. |

Wow, that's ingenious!
All this time I'm killing ymself waiting for approaching jumpgates and never realized there was sucha clever solution
How do you manage those bookmarks though? I mean, sometimes you'll be warping into a gate from opposite directions? Is there any way to organize bookmarks? They need to add "folders" in the bookmark menu so you can organize stuff by region or soemthing- if it's not already included!
thanks!

Uhm, hate to burst your bubble, but MWD lasts for 10-15 seconds, depending on the level of your High Speed Manouvering skill. 10s+10% per skill level. That's still great for getting you into warp fast.
@ Valerien: There is already the option to make folders in the BM list. Look at the bottom of it. You don't really *need* to do that to manage instajumps (although I like to keep my BMs in tidy folders), if you have them properly named it should be no problem selecting the right one in the right-click-in-space menu. You can use insta-bookmarks for more than jumping though, make a bookmark on top of a station and you can dock instantly after warping in, heck it can even be used to make insta-can BMs for the haulers in a mining op.

Uhm, I hate to burst your bubble but my MWD's turn off in less than 10 seconds.
My afterburners on the other hand take a good 10 seconds to turn off.

Try putting your MWD onto manual and then pressing the activation button twice. You should get a warning telling you that it cannot be switched off while active, and how long it's activation time is.
Mine activates for 10 seconds, and I have terrible MWD skills...

1MN MWD: 10 sec 10MN MWD: 10 sec 1MN AB: 10 sec 10MN AB: 10 sec 10MN AB II: 10 sec
Afterburner increases AB duration with 10%/level so at least 14 secs if you can use MWDs. The other skills only modify speed and/or cap usage, not duration.

Oops, you are right. They stay online for 10 seconds.
But I still warp in 4 to 5 seconds.
I turn on the mwd before I select my bookmark to warp to. The mwd is blinking but I'm not moving until I tell the ship to warp to my bookmark. Then the ship uncloaks and the mwd is already 1/2 way through it's activation cycle. 4 to 5 seconds later I'm in warp.
Try it. It works Great!

One thing I do with my Indy when I haul ore is use the AB. When you go into warp, you have to get to a certain speed, percentage of your max speed (75% or something) before the jump starts. My badger has a top speed of 175m/s, turn on the AB for one cycle moving my max speed to 210. The speed needed to enter warp moves up too. Now, assuming you are aligned with the jump, when the AB cuts out, your top speed goes back down to its original value. As does the requirement for warp. But, with the AB, you have accelerated past the needed speed to start your warp jump. Instant warp start when the AB cuts out. Throw in some stabilizers to make the thing turn faster and you can enter warp fairly fast.

Dump the AB and replace it with a 1mn mwd. The afterburner skills make the AB duration longer which makes it longer for you to warp. The mwd will get you up to the speed you need to warp and will cut off sooner. Turn on the mwd before you select the location to jump to and you will warp really fast.

Edited by: voogru on 20/04/2004 03:48:33 IMO Best way to dodge pirates in 0.0 is with the following config:
Ship: Vigil
Highs: Nothing Meds: 2x 1MN MWD, 1x Tech 2 Small Capacitor Battery Lows: 2x Overdrive I's, 1x Micro Aux Power Core
Using this config, I have successfully outran pirates using interceptors with MWD, while webbed. With my skills max speed is 5.6KM/sec with both MWD's when webbed with a single webber.

High Speed Manouvering skill improves MWD duration by 10% per level the same way Afterburner skill does for ABs. So if you have both skills at L4 (like me) the duration of both ABs and MWDs is 14 seconds.
Besides, it is possible (and easy) to reach "warp speed" ( = 50% of your current max speed) with the afterburners/MWD on, which then just turn of once your ship is ready to warp and does. It's not as if you can't warp with those on
I'll give you that though, I think you accelerate faster with MWDs than ABs
