Sorry if this is the wrong forum.
I've been looking into getting a wireless network (I'm a US player) that allows me to connect to the internet where ever I am. I was wondering if anyone does this or if it is even able to play EVE over these wireless networks. I was thinking of going with either AT&T or Verizon, but I wasn't positive. I'm not very knowledgeable in this subject, hence why I am asking if this is possible or if anyone else does this. Thank you!

Either are fine if you are talking about an air card... Depending on the strength of signal your rate of transfer could slow down... also if you are in a large fleet battle or need to load a grid with alot of ships (say Jita) it might take longer than DSL or Cable....
Most wireless carriers (i've tested it on verizon) give you basically just under dsl speeds... better than dial up... and definitely better than nothing. You'll miss being connected.
That being said... nothing beats being on a camping trip in the desert than being able to check eve cuz you are that addicted. ---------- Sig Begins ----------

Ah, I see, thanks. When you say air cards are you talking about those ones that slide into the computer? I was thinking of getting a USB one, but am still undecided. Also I noticed that the sites have a MB limit (I don't know what that is), will EVE be effected by that?

Verizon Air Cards or even a tethered Smartphone is pure win.
My cable went down due to some bad wiring and I realized I payed extra for my Smartphone to be used as a cell modem. Ran fine even with Teamspeak going, much better than dial-up.
The aircard I use on trips and when going to places that most likely wont have wifi.

MB usage shouldn't affect your gameplay of eve. However if you download songs, email with attachments, etc etc.... you will want to consider their "unlimited plan" for your given network.
I was talking about aircards I've used my phone (x6700) for verizon for the past 2 years for remote usage via usb "tether" (doing research on your phone model will also let you know if you can use the databackend of your phone for the data cost there are several phones that allow tethering which means you can play eve / use the internet like a hardline)
Hope that helps. ---------- Sig Begins ----------

Just remember that it's not bandwidth but latency which is the most important metric here. Wireless carriers such as AT&T can advertise "Wifi Broadband" but without testing the ping times it's impossible to know whether Eve would play ok on their networks.
Request that information, such as a ping between the node and 87.237.38.200 to see how long it takes for data to get to the EVE servers. If that's less than 1000ms, you should be ok.

Sprint has the fastest mobile broadband network of all carriers. I have used a Sprint Novatel USB evdo card for the last year which I use to play Eve about 99% of my Eve time. I can run 2 clients and Teamspeak with no problems or disconnects. It is more reliable than my home cable which I have tried to use for Eve but which drops all the time and I always go back to Sprint. I get speeds up to 1200 kbs download speed.
The only minor issue I ever had is when CCP released a patch about a year ago, I started to get disconnected right after logging in. All I had to do was change a setting in my connecting software which basically makes my computer think it is connected to a normal wire modem so it is connected continually. This ended up better anyway because all I have to do is plug it in and I am connected without running the software for the card.

I use a sprint phone (HTC Titan - EVDO rev.A) to play Eve when my dsl goes down. It works fine, and I have to admit that on the whole Sprint's EVDO has been much more reliable than Verizon's DSL.
Sprint SERO is quite cheap and gives you unlimited data.

i had wireless here for a while, and while the dl/ul speed is great, the ping times were horrendous. Loading and manipulating market orders was bordering on impossible, I would have hated to be in a large fleet fight with it. ----------------------

I've used Verizon's service. Speedy, but at times latency is multiple seconds. Bad for ssh, bad for EVE. ---- EVE-Central.com - Your EVE economic and corporate site, featuring the inter-region market browser |

and remember, Always to check the fine print on contracts/agreements.
Even when it says "Unlimited" at the top of the page, buried words like "Reasonable", "Excessive Use" and "Overage Fee" let them (carrier's) twist and warp "Unlimited" into "As much as we think you should have, plus extra fees for going past a limit we arbitrarily made up and wont tell you about"

I can't comment on the ISPs in question, but point to note: disregarding the speed of the connection, I would think wireless will always be less reliable than a wired connection. One more thing that can fail between you and the server really. |

I played Eve on the Telstra 3G Network for 3 months when I first moved back to Australia from the UK while waiting for broadband to be installed. Our network here is fairly crappy and it still played very nicely. I doubt you'll have any sorts of problems with the kind of networks you have there in the U.S.
