....what the crap do they mean? I've seen red blue and purple, but can't seem to figure out why each one is significant...

one colour is jumps between solar systems within a constellation;
another colour is jumps between solar systems in different constellations (constellation jumps);
third colour is jumps between solar systems in different regions (region jumps).
Not sure which is which, but you should be able to figure it out with this information

I've personally set it so the lines are colored by region, to more easily tell them apart.

By Jump Type - Blue means the jump is within the same Constellation; red means it's to a different Constellation but within the same Region, and purple means it's a jump to a different Region.

The significance of the constellation/region jumps is limited.
For constellations:
- Certain Agent mission levels ( 3 or lower) only send you to do things in the same constellation, so it's useful to pick a small constellation, so you don't have to travel far.
- Sovereignty rules to get constellation sovereignty and creating a capital.
For region jumps, the importance is;
- Market orders are not visible outside a region.
- Contracts can only be collected in your current region (although they can be viewed elsewhere).
- 0.0 Alliances tend to define their boundaries at the regions edge ie. cross this line and you die.
