i've got quite a bit of spare cash and i'm thinking of starting to PvP, so i'd like some advice on how to set up my first PvP cruiser (thorax), i'll probably be using it alone or in relatively small gangs two or three people. As far as i understand i'll need an MWD, Blasters and scrambler + webber, i'm not too sure wether to fill out the highs with 5 blasters or use 4 allowing more powergrd to fit other modules main problem i'm having is that an MWD and 5 blaster setup is quite power hungry (not sure wether it would be better to use the lightests med-blasters available to free up power grid). At any rate some guidance on the matter would be much apreciated. (lastly is there any real point sacrificing low slots for warp core stabs?)

I'd say there are two schools.
With skills: Heavy Neutrons, mwd, web, point, 3 mfs, damage control.
Or Electrons, mwd, web, point, RCU 1600mm plate, EANM, suitcase and mfs.
Without skills: Electrons, 800mm plate, eanm, suitcase.

Hmm i have a setup in mind, would like to see what ppl think
Highs: 4x Electrons (Antimatter charges) 1x med nos OR 1x smart bomb (not sure which)
Meds: MWD, Scrambler, Web
Lows: 2xMFS 1xoverdrive injector 1xMed armour rep 1X DCU
(any guidance would be good, i seem to continuously run short on powergrid i could train a level of engeneering relatively quickly but wouldnt aliviate the problem much and as far as i know using reactor control units is a bad idea) I chose the med armour rep over the plate and small armour rep i though a good repair capacity would be better than a massive capacity to take damage not too sure about that choice.. I dont expect the fitting to be FANTASTIC but i do hope it wont pop at the first sign of trouble.

He's totally right, that is the real man fitting, with newbish skills go for the fit with electrons and an 800mm plate, the 1600mm only fits with perfect fitting skills and an rcu II. whatever you do though, please don't fall into the 1600mm with light guns trap. Repping through a plate that large is ridiculous and a the real man fitting mentioned above will beat it hands down anyway.

Edited by: Gaelenus on 27/03/2008 00:17:03 Okay i've refined my fitting as follows:
Highs: 5xElectrons / 4x Electrons and 1 medium nos (still not sure wehthere the cap warfare is worth the damage reduction?)
Meds Web MWD 7.5k Scram
Lows 800mm plate 2x MAgnetic field stabilisers 1x adaptive nano membrane 1x small armour repairere
(i'm assuming with this set up i'm really just hoping i can take more damage than the other guy seeing as the small armour rep is gonna do next to nothing in regards to reparing that plate... at least in a combat time frame..) Oh will also be using 5 hammer head ones

ya man, that's a good fitting though i'd make sure you've got a damage control on it because gallente ships have the most structure hp and.... well... you NEED it on a blaster/endurance ship. so put one on there and i'll like you . also, use the last blaster, even with a nos, if this thing gets cap war put on it it's going to be out rather quickly. just remember you aren't running the mwd for very long.

hmm nearly there then , well i'll go with the 5x blaster setup so no NOS, last point rele is on my lows. I have three modules to chose between and only 2 free slots -Small armor repairer -DCU -Adaptive nano membrane
i'm leaning towards fitting the rep and DCU.... not very sure advice on this matter would be much apreciated

Simple answer would be - you don't.
Dock up and rep or let a gangmate with remote reps rep you up. Or fight till you pop.

If you can squeeze a 20km point on there, do it. You're presumably after belt PvP in low sec and while you might catch some folks with a 7.5, the number that get away when you're 10km away on warp in while drive you nuts. After missing a solo Apoc 4 times on 4 seperate gates having fitted a 20km, I will ever fly with a 24km point ever again. ______

Yuri that would be fantastic if: a) i had the skills b) i didn't mind losing the huge amount that ship must cost to fit .... though seeing as i don't have the skills, and although i do have the money i wouldn't want to gamble it all on my first proper pvp ship that set up is a bit out of reach....

1. Yes, its a bit costly (still less than by bigger ship t2 fits) 2. Yes, needs a lot of skill
But: You can change the whole t2 moduls to t1 named (not the most expensive types), but KEEP the rolled tungsten. So: Cheap ship, less skill needed What matters: This formula is the best, imho (no matter if cheap t1, or t2) What can happen: Without adv. weapon upgr. lvl4 maybe u cant fit all the modules Then u have to decide, smaller dps, or weaker tank

Edited by: Jallem Sims on 27/03/2008 11:21:34 /me about to load med ECM drones...... thought it would go so nicely in my vigilant (faction thorax), as i open them a new one with;
4x heavy ions (navy) 1x neut (darkblood)
web/disruptor(faint)/10mn mwd/small cap booster
dc II/3xEANM II/Mag field stab
oh, and set of trimark rigs :P
but then that is for a faction thorax, so gotta spend for the fun... standard thorax set up is similar without the 'faction' and capbooster.
The neuts are great for snagging inties and reducing those active tanking *****s to crumbling wrecks.... if they can target you as you have them jammed with your drones.... enjoy taking them apart...
although... only just trained for the drone setup :) so yet to actively try. But have seen it work very nicely

hmm never considered using a neut... as for the 1600mm plate formula could give that a try, though its basically the same as my proposed set up except dropping a mag stab i.e. dps for the 1600 tank...also was just thinking if i have spare power grid would it be unwise to switch my highs from all being the same gun to say a few ions and the rest electrons?

Seeing some of the comments and setups in here, I thought I would post mine and see what sort of criticism and constructive ideas it can get!
Highs: 5 Heavy Modal Neutrons (using antimatter)
Meds: 10Mn MWD / Web (best named) / 20km Scram
Lows: SAR II / 3 MFS II / DCU II
Rigs: Not sure thinking of putting a trimark armor rig and one Kinetic and one Thermal Resist Rigs
Drones: 3 Hammerhead II 2 Energy Neut
Does very well for me in a small gang (2 or 3 ppl) and is putting out some good damage. Havent really calculated the dps on it but each shot hits for roughly 150 and med hybrid is still at 3, working on getting to T2 guns!

Edited by: RDemon on 27/03/2008 14:33:54 Hola m8t, i fly pritty much nothing else then thorax, for effective small gang pvp, here is THE setup:
ALWAYS USE ECM DRONES, they are amazing, i fly with 2 or 3 others in general en you can lock down 1 or 2 ship completly, or get away when things go wrong 1 vs 1, they will Not work on recon ships in general.
THE setup:
i use tech II, but as mention before you can switch to tech one and upgrade while you go:
3 ions, 2 electron with caldari navy am.
mwd/web/warp scrm
800mm EANM DCU mag stabs * 2
FUll tech two gives me 415 dps with my skills and implants, and about 20k eff hp.
Now thats a pvp ship :) dont bother neuting, just do damage, thats what you are good at .

edit : the warp scram and web you may need to change to named, oterwise you run into cpu probs.

nothing worse than having a damn crow wizzing around! or a couple of rifters.... i guess i fit a neut cause in my experiance the is nothing worse than watching your active tank drain faster than it should!! I guess its just chance tbh.
I often think of dropping the nuet for guns.. but its really helpful in gang situations to have someone draining cap. Not used ECM drones yet, but if they work well (which i am told they totally own) i will prob reduce my HP buffer and go for more gank. Trimarks are 15mil a go, and only use on my vigi seen as a thorax is really a throw away ship at 7mil a pop.
Faction Ion blasters have better dam multiplier but less range.... and also less Power.

Ill edit when i find the forum post... but the is a great explaination on the forusm somewhere.
Basically its a calculation on type of sensor strength. By which the higher strength you have ofset by there strength changes the 'chance' percetage you have in jamming them. Each race has its own type of sensor design. Gal is Magnetometric, and typically the thorax has a strength of 15points. The vespa EC-600 drones has a multi spec strength of 7.5points on each type.... anyway...
not sure i fully understand it, but the more points you can stack the better your chances of getting a jam on the target.

I often think of dropping the nuet for guns.. but its really helpful in gang situations to have someone draining cap.
More dps is usually more beneficial in gang situations, and if you can neut a crow ( which should be orbiting you at 20km) then he would die anyway, since he'd be in web range, same goes to rifters, and also the thorax already has problems with cap, a neut will just make it worse
Another setup, a little bit like rdemon, think this needs perfect fitting skills and maybe a few fitting implants 5 heavy electron II mwd, web, scram 1600mm plate, 2 mfs II, 1dc II, 1 EANM II ECM Drones
Can swap 1 of the guns for light neutron blaster II __________________________________ Garmonation - Rupture fun video

nothing like pumping the mwd to get within 14k (dark blood) neut range :)
unless its a tackling inty.. then yeah... but rifters... not going to do much damage at 20k plus. Its really for those pesky ones that try to web me :P

One comment about Thorax drones for PvP. I'll typically use 5 Warrior IIs and 5 Light ECM drones. The Warriors are for harassing 'ceptors/nano ships, the ECM drones are for everything else.

I still see tonnes of stabs in low sec. Mostly on mission Drakes, sometimes Ravens and other random ships. It's a bit annoying actually, so I'm buying a HIC.
Far as the 'rax goes, I love it. One of my favorite ships in the game. Lots of different fits that are viable and you'll find some good ones in this thread so I won't bother adding to it since mine is pretty similar. ______

^This, although without running the numbers and speaking purely out of my bottom, remove the 1600 plate and put CPR II in there for a different option. Helps both your MWD and will last longer repping. Since it's a non-rigged setup, you can't get much more out of that (cap recharge rate), but I'd be concerned about adding 1600 plates to a cruiser without the cap to be able to mwd yourself out very effectively due to added mass. 2x CCC's + will definitely be a huge advantage here, but then we're not talking about an 18 mil cruiser anymore, are we?

used to run similar, with duel 1600 plates.... and vespa IIs. Was a great ship... all out short range gank with the lights being suprisingly good, and one hell of a hp buffer! For large fleet battles, changed the neuts for a set of 150mm t2 rails to run as light support before i specialised. Now, the great thing about it was the shock people got when they chewed through your shield they feel like they hit a brick wall :)
in fleets the randoms not following primary call move to a easier target! the BC you just started eating apart starts to hope they last!
Tbh, though.... i guess in the reach for best ship optimisation.... use its bonuses.
On a follow up to my idea to use a neut.... last night jumped in on 2 stabbers and 4 rifters.... stabber only just started nibbling at my armor before it crumbled, and everything else was like squating flies :)
these are great ships :)

High slot: 5x Modal electron blaster I (Caldary navy antimatter)
Med slot : 10mn MWD , j5 prototype webber , warp disrupter II
low slot : 2x magstab II ,Damage control II ,nano plating Tech II,800mm Thungsten
i still not lost in pvp i killed many other cruisers with this setup ! U need good Gunnery skills u not need tech II Guns!!
Just never putt a armor rep on your thorax it drains your cap too fast just fit 2x magstab II and kill the target fast!
