The trick is how you guards it a couple of falcons with scan res scripts and logistic ships will be worth more than a few Mega's. Lock fast and jam, your only real concern is bolstering the freighters tank and cutting the gankers DPS for the 30-40 seconds it takes concord to clean up. Perhaps a couple of webbers to help get the freighter out of there once the point is removed via the ECM. All depends how valuable that cargo is.
The big problem is; guarding a freighter is BORING and requires a lot of concentration because the fight will be over in under a minute and most trips will be completely uneventful.
I'm very tempted by the idea of giving module slots to freighters, not to many, but a couple to play with. Put the safety of the freighter in the hands of the pilot a bit more. Remembering to turn on that DC II could be the difference between life and death.
I agree with guarding the freighter - but then we need the ganging problem sorted. A gang member not in corp cannot engage else he will be the victim of Concord.
Fact remains - in society - if it is a criminal activity the Perpetrators should be brought to justice! Not a quick blowing up of the ship and a 15 minute aggression timer. In other MMO's if u break the law, u need to escape the legal authorities and if u do not escape, then u are thrown in jail for a day or three. You do not just have a timer which u can spend logged off - (has to be game time) and then u get insurance paid as well. No if u do want to kill a freighter it must be worth the effort, time and isk. Now it is just a lawless bunch of thrill seekers, seeking a relatively easy kill. True everything said about the freighter pilots need to start respecting their ships and treating them as capital ships, but this alone should not be a reason to allow pirate activity in high sec space. There is low sec space and there is 0.0. The game dynamics do not help a defending gang in high sec and I vote that, that should be fixed first. Then we can kill the pirates and throw them in jail.
