Miso - I tried both mcaffee and norton firewalls, they still let messenger spam through. Go with zone alarm (yeah, freeware crap) havnt had a popup since. Zone Alarm Here
As far as popup's in your browser, google popup blocker works great.

Windows 2000 latest sp's and every damn update, no firewall and virusscanner, and been running various versions _with_ internet connection since 2000.
Gotta love those linux routers. __________________________

some possible issues:
messenger spam (messenger is a windows service that allows admins (or anyone) the ability to send messages to users on a network, not to be confused with msn, aol or other types of "messenger" clients which are portable chat rooms) messenger spam will tend to be in grey pop-up boxes. you turn it off from the services control panel in win2k/xp
or you have spyware, gator, bonzi buddy, or some other sort of ad fetching program on your system, adaware (www.lavasoft.com) should remove these types of attacks
browser hijack, your browser has been taken over by spammers and click-through pirates, there are several progs out there to fix this, try "hijack this" for removal.
some sort of trojan or worm, av should find these. but you never know ------------------------------------------------ There is a theory which states that if anyone discovers just exactly what the universe is for and why we are here, that it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. Then there is a theory which states that this has already happened. á á -Douglas Adams

Hi Miso, hope you read this before doing the full system reinstall. I had the same problem and I too have mcafee firewall. All you have to do is go in to the 'control internet programs' menu in the firewall program. Scroll down the list of programs till you find 'Messenger vVersion x.x', click on it and on the choices list underneath select 'block this program from accessing the internet'. Apply the changes and this should do the trick. Hope this helps.

It should be made legal to kill people into this intrusive marketing, I wish I could send a bolt of lightning via the telephone or the screen sometimes.

This is the messenger service pop up, you don't need it unless you are dependent on receiving domain messages from admins or other services...
If you are unable for some reason to disable the messengfer service just do the easy thing and stop it temporarely bu selecting start - run and write:
net stop messenger
[press ok]
That will keep those pop ups away until your next reboot...
