I'm a little bit bored today so I sat down in front of Microsoft Excel and the transaction history screen in account management and worked out, reasonably accurately, the total amount I have spent on EVE since I activated in 2003. Just because.
I've had five accounts in total since 2003 - all with varying levels of activity. Two of them I can't remember their login details so I don't have figures for them. But they were only active for a few months.
I have also attended Fanfest once and bought fanboi merchandise from the store.
Subscriptions: -ú1,149.19 PLEX: -ú149.53 (for sale on the market) Account Activations: -ú57.06 (including two boxes I bought in my local Game when the game first launched) EVE Store: -ú77.35 EON: -ú41 Fanfest: -ú1204 (inlcuding flights, hotel, fanfest, spending money, car hire, excursions etc.)
Total: -ú2,678.13
If it weren't for PLEX and GTC, I would have spent a lot more. I've used 33 PLEX / GTCs. The figures above take into account exchange rates at the time.
My point to all this? Well, I found the total figure quite surprising. That's quite a lot of money to spend on a video game. But considering that it's over the course of eight and a half years, it's not an expensive hobby at all. In fact, it's a very cheap hobby and I've been to Iceland with it too.
I don't think EVE is an expensive hobby. If you think about the amount you could spend on a sports package on satellite or cable, it's a pittance. And with sports TV you don't get to blow up space ships. AND you don't get to grief.
Anyone else surprised about the amount they spend on EVE? Or do you dread thinking about it? I have a specific comb for my beard. |

Actually suprised, I havn't spent as much as you have. CCP does a good job at advertising their stuff, and I could easily be tricked into the thousands you have spent. disorientating |

It really doesn't matter if you're having fun. It's also surprising how much going to the movies costs, or how much weekend camping trips cost, or how much smoking or drinking cost. Everything is expensive if you start adding it up over the years.
The thing is if you're on a budget, do you have the willpower to stick to your budget even if that means sacrificing EVE subs? If you don't, then you're likely to have financial trouble and not just because of EVE. If you do, then who cares? Have fun, you paid for it. |

Absolutely. I have dropped my sub due to finances in the past. I'd rather pay the electricity bill than the EVE sub, you know? :)
But that's the good thing with PLEX - you can use PLEX when you're skint. Obviously it's probably more responsible to to make more money than playing video games! I have a specific comb for my beard. |

The figure is quite high yes, but you should try to calculate the cost per hour. I'm sure it's indeed a very cheap hobby |

This. I went and saw Journey 2 last night, spent $23 in 2 hrs.
Over 7 years I figured I have spent around $6000 US more than less. If I counted the amount I spent on car Insurance or something else I never use, it's much higher. |

I have 2 hobbies.
EvE (well gaming in general but atm its eve) and cars.
1 years worth of EvE maybe with a few plex's for me to convert to aurum 300 euro tops
new engine and forged internals that will give me maybe a few hours of fun per week (once i have endured hours putting it together and bleeding out from knuckle injuries) 1500 euro's
Even with spending money on the NeX store its still a mighty cheap hobby and I enjoy wasting my time on EvE (is it wasted if you enjoy doing it?!? my girlfriend disagrees but she has never blown up **** in space) |

On average 4 accounts active for 6 years.
About to go to Fanfest for the 5th time, been to three Veto meets in London and one Veto meet in Nashville, TN.
Somehow ended up spending -ú500 at the silent auction at FF and so on.

Cost of rent/land tax too since you need to have a house to have internet access.
Plus cost of food as a child, otherwise you wouldn't be old enough to play eve.

Truth is that amount of bang for all the bucks invested to CCP is awful low during Eve's entire life cycle. Quality, functionality and content are at level what you would expect from MMORPG which has been in development for 2-3 years. Only things what have been following on decent level are graphics and space combat.
For almost 10 years old game EvE is really shallow and clumsy when compared to all of the funds it has collected and to the potential what it could be. Almost every time when CCP releases dev blog or advertisement where they praise their awesomeness and goodness - it just reminds me about all the failures, wasted time and money.
I am really really sad that so big part of Eve's income has gone to CCP's other projects and Eve's buried expansions which never got released in the end. Too many 18 months, too many failures, too little bang for 10 years of revenue.
Sad thing is that even now Crucible seems to be rather popular, the big picture has not changed much.

I'll second that, I waited for walk in stations for a decade (since they started talking about it, I found an article just to make sure). They showed it at fan fest, they showed like 5 tech demos over the years, but nothing ever comes of it. I don't know what CPP does but it sure seems clear they can't set a vision and then accomplish it without re re visioning for a decade and 30 or 40 times. Bird in the hand, its worth two in the bush. Now just actually release stations and DUST within a reasonable amount of time. I've seen more new players returning just based on the rumors, if you actually do a good job with it (AND ACTUALLY RELEASE IT) I'm pretty sure subscriber counts would increase a ton. |

Agreed - sounds like much for a computer game, but then again, I usually spend the cost of a months eve subscription on cigars in 1-2 days. morons- sting like a butterfly and-ápost like a bee. |

20$ Activating account and first 30 days 15$ second 30 days 30$ the two months after Gooonswarm welped the sov bill in 2009
16.25$ a year for 4 years of EvE, I consider that a good value. You've got to remember that these are just simple miners. These are people of the land. The common clay of New Eden. You know... morons. |

"Value" is a relative term.
It is true that grinding ISK may provide more value for some people than grinding Gé¼Gé¼. Maybe they are awesome at grinding ISK, are botting or the activity gives value by itself (i.e. is considered fun). Or it is because their RL Gé¼Gé¼ earnings are too limited.
For most people, grinding ISK to PLEX probably reduce the value of playing EVE even if it looks good on paper. |

I have only been playing since PLEX. I only spent $104.97 on eve. however $52.20 a month for 3 years adds up to almost 2 grand.
I used to have Radio Controlled trucks and sometimes cars for a hobby when I had a "real" job. That **** got wayyyyyyyyyyyyy more expensive than a couple grand. like in the 10's. SO yeah, eve is not that bad IMHO.
