Pathetic. People from the country that kills children in Iraq every day protest against Chinese olimpics. What could be better.

To answer this question as well as proving the whole Free Tibet thing is a complete waste of time:
A Few hundred years ago China was conquered by the Manchus, who are not ethnic Han Chinese. Manchuria is in the North-east of China. I think it was the Qianlong Emperor who became quite spiritual and managed to get the Tibetans and Mongolians to willingly come under Chinese rule. The area directly west of China, Turkestan was historically conquered. Now with the Manchurian homeland in the northeast, Mongolia in the north, Turkestan and Tibet in the west, the Han Chinese homeland was essentially secure territory. Any 'barbarians' who had ideas about conquering China would have to go through those great swaths of land first. But they didn't count on 'sea barbarians'.
Anyway that's why Tibet is so important to the Chinese leadership. And in answer to LUH 3471's question, they're not defending themselves from the Tibetans, but they see TIbet as a means of defense against any other potential enemies, especially India which shares some border with Tibet. If Mao had his way Mongolia would still have been in Chinese hands and we'd probably moan about that as well, but you can thank good ol' Uncle Joe Stalin for that cos he wanted Monglia to be a buffer against the Chinese.
And that's why the whole Free Tibet thing is pointless. China isn't going to give Tibet up because 1) it questions their legitimacy as rightful heirs to the Imperial legacy and 2) it means giving up strategically beneficial territory and 3) using the Olympics as a means of coercing China is pointless because the olympics are suppose to be free of politics and use of sanctions would be more productive even though again useless for the above 2 reasons.
And besides I don't see anyone coming up with a Free Manchuria campaign. Manchuria was never Chinese land. Today there are hardly any Manchurians left cos China did to it was it's doing to Tibet now, promoting great influxes of Chinese migration into the land and causing what the Dalai Lama described as 'Cultural genocide.' Apparently there are only a handful of people who speak the Manchurian language, and i doubt it's going to get any better. If that isn't cultural genocide I dunno what is, yet I have seen no Free Manchuria camapaigns before... it's just hypocrisy, or it must be a lost cause afterall who cares about Manchurians. Or what about Free Turkestan, atleast Tibetans and Chinese share a similar religion, Turkestan is primarily Muslim, but who cares about the Muslims, especially these days. That's why i hate Free tibet movements, it's hypocritical, if you want to free one land then you must free the others for exactly the same reason.
It should be 'end the Chinese Empire' not 'Free Tibet'... but then again i'm against the break up of the Chinese empire
