Definitely a big NO. Anyone who has followed the Chinese server will understand this. Aside from irked players, people would be able to exploit the system and ruin the economy and game.
If you think alliances are bad now, imagine those who can set up POSes across 0.0 w/o anyone to destroy them. There wouldn't be Dreads for a year or so, so POSes could be established and fortified very easily with no way to counter them. It may be easy for alliances to control more space than they need now, but with a reset it would be next to no trouble.
Maybe if it were reset to launch status, but more stable, I could go for it, but then people would still know how to establish massive industrial bases and farm ISK in ways that weren't possible at launch. So probably still no.

Yes, in fact I would re-initiate my old alt account (or start another) as well. As is, that's about the only thing that would keep me from leaving if there was actually any real competition in the genre. That or increasing the map size by 2 or 3 times the size.

It would ruin the game, but not just because of the skill reset.
Primarily because the whole server would be full of people who know how to do things perfectly. No mistakes in character creation. Everyone speccing Atchura or whatever they are called for perfect Perception and Willpower. Everyone would run to buy just the right BPOs, train them up to the right ME/PE. A gold rush to the most profitable regions would ensue. In short, China server mark II.

Yay!
Level the playing field at random intervals. Then we'll see who's really any good.
Plus it would wipe the smug expression off a few faces.

Im not about to start the last few years all over again
Im also not going to bother with an eve 2, if they dont remove the learning skills

Lets say that today we wiped the server, what about in 2 years time when newbies want a new serverwipe... you still would want that now when YOU are on top ?
Truth is that after X amounts of years ... skillpoints equal out for everyone... right now after 4 years of playing (half year off without training skills) my newbie corpmates that I have played like 2 years longer are equal in skillpoints. They have catched up ... what's up with that ???? it's not suppose to happen right ?, well it did. ---------------------------------------------- "When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I felt as a child, I thought as a child: now that I am become a man, I have put away childish things." 1 cor. |

To all the people who said they'd still play after a reset.
Would you still play after the 2nd reset 6 months after the 1st? Because of all the newbies whining about your 6 months worth of SP/isk advantage and wanting to even the playing field?
How about the 3rd? 4th?
Every MMO that did a server reset has died after a few months.
Sharding the server would have the same effect. There was this one MMO that used to have only one server, and after much whinage, the devs gave in and added a 2nd one.
Everyone migrated into the 2nd server, even the people who didnt want to did because no one would play on the old server anymore. A few months later, the whinage commenced again till the devs reset the 2nd server.
Game died after that. If you want to see eve die, shard the server or do a reset.

Only if they revamped the skill system while at it. The current skill system is a stupid cash cow designed to keep people throwing money at CCP. It's a huge obstacle between new players and fun, and creates artificial inequality where player skill should be the only deciding factor.

As pointed out look at what happened to the Chinese server. POS' with no means to destroy them and players would "tech" up so much quicker cries for another reset would follow. Once the precedent has been set there would be no turning back.

Btw, everyone saying you wouldn't continue playing is basically saying this game is not worth it for new players. Sad but true.
You think the game would be better and more fun if all the players were able to fly all the ships and use all the mods straight away?

No, there's nothing wrong with building up your skills. I just don't like the idea of someone taking all my skills away from me.
Sure, the first few million SPs are a bit dull, but once you start to specialise you're laughing.

I think it would be better and more fun for those new players (which is what EVE needs). Many old players would of course be crying when noobs come and kick their teeth in when given somewhat equal means to fight. I don't see any good reason for this "initiation rite" where a fresh player is forced into the role of inconsequential cannon fodder for the first year or so. Why not just throw everyone in the sandbox and let survival of the fittest take care of everything? Right now it's survival of the ones who have been paying subscription fees for the longest time.

I really like the idea of one universe. So i dont want more servers. i would not play if server reset because of history. history made by players create unique eve universe. skilling is long term here, its good to have 4+ years veterans here and you can still pod 4+ year char or compete with him in market etc.

So building skills is ok... but not so ok that you'd bother with it again. If it were fun, then surely you'd have no problem with it?

Ok let's disregard all the territorial stuff, economy, etc, and say it would be counterstrike in space. What does that make current EVE? Counterstrike in space, where you buy bigger guns with real money (=subscription fees over many years)?

I quite enjoy cooking dinner, but it doesn't mean I want someone to whip it out of the oven after 30 minutes and throw it away, just to give me the pleasure of re-doing it.

your post is full of largely incorrect assumptions. If there was a server rest, the experienced and organised alliance players would utterly dominate 0.0 all over again. Combat is not decided with SP alone, and the larger the fight, the less individual SP come into it. Additionally, the 0.0 alliance players would have the advantages of knowing exactly where the good systems and moons are, which are the vital choke-points, where the best ores are. They would just make a beeline for the best space and claim it with POS which would be effectively invulnerable once anchored.
If all players could use all ships and mods as well, then the disparity would be even greater. Let me tell you that there's a lot to know about which mods to fit and how to properly use a ship. The old players have had lots of experience doing this with the advanced ships, the new players have none. Result: slaughter.
The noobs and empire-huggers would be left in the cold.
When you say "it would be better and more fun for those new players (which is what EVE needs)" your agenda becomes obvious. You don't object to there being old, powerful, rich players. You just object to the fact that you're not one of them.

You're probably right about all of this, and I'm not opposed to any of it, because this is all a result of player skill. If you for instance beat someone because you knew how to fit your ship and the other guy didn't, then that's just the way it should be. I object to the kind of situation where you beat the other guy only because you had a T2 ship, and the other guy couldn't fly one due to character skills.
Originally by: Malcanis The noobs and empire-huggers would be left in the cold.
Only if they choose to stay in empire, or are too incompetent to make it in lowsec. But at least they would have an equal chance from character skill point of view.

Are you seriously suggesting that balancing of same types should be made with the assumption of one vs many? In that case, give my raven 500% damage and shield hp bonus. In a larger fight you can bring many of whatever battleship you're flying, so clearly that's balanced

It wouldn't be eve anymore if it was reset. The history would be gone. But the same people would still be ganking the same people, the whiners would still be whineing and the same groups of people would be the same groups.
I don't think I would play. In some ways it would be a relief, tbh. If I lost all the sp I worked for, I'd probably not have that urge to keep them going that keeps me playing when I'm bored with the game... (yeah I promise I'll get counciling! Not!)

Eve Online is a very special game. Love it or hate it, (and sometimes both at the same time) we all acknowledge it has something special that keeps us coming back, keeps us training those skills, evolving with the technology, fighting our virtual foes and chasing the dreams so beautifully envisioned in every fabric of this engaging and utterly ruthless game.
ItĘs about the universe: itĘs big, itĘs brutal, and itĘs totally uncompromising. ItĘs filled with predators and bullies, rivals and spies, assassins, psychopaths, patriots and the occasional hero. The environment can grind ambitions to dust and send you packing with relentless, terrible cruelty; you can see your hopes broken, corporations and alliances crushed and devastated, you can witness fantastically expensive and rare spaceships burning and annihilated before your astonished eyes and the work of years undone in moments in a frenzy of betrayal and intrigue that wouldnĘt be out of place in the darkest espionage novels of the cold war.
But all this matters; itĘs remembered. Because Eve is a single universe with a single history, and whether we play villains or heroes or driven individuals just trying to survive, our stories remain. Talk about Eve and you talk about Eve. Talk about the death of the Phoenix Alliance in the GNW of 2004 and you are talking about something everyone of that age lived through. Talk about the Great War and itĘs a subject with a common frame of reference for all Eve players - our characters are not lost in an endless repeating mirrored maze of shards and instances and duplicate game-worlds, they stand their place in the one universe and as they succeed or fail they leave their mark in the virtual history. To play Eve is to live Eve and experience the aggregate accomplishment of a hundred thousand players who have come and gone in this same universe before you.
Eve is unique amongst online games; a single virtual world where consequence and reputation are universal and accomplishment is absolute. ItĘs a rare treasure and compelling vision, and truly something worth fighting to preserve.

What? I don't see how you get that from what I said.
What I meant was this: 1 v 1 in similar ship, having a lot more SP brings a good advantage. 100 v 100, extra SP over what is required to fit your ship SP don't really make all that much difference. Got Shield Management, Hull Upgrades and Mechanics maxed out? Great: you'll last 1.25 seconds when you're primary instead of 1.0 seconds. When it comes to large combats, the issue is decided by numbers, ship types, and above all FC skill at managing the fleet and fleet member experience at quickly and efficiently following the FC's orders.
A coordinated, well-fitted, expertly led fleet of 80 T1 fitted ships will decimate a gang 100 T2 fitted ships of similar class.
CONCORD provide consequences, not safety; only you can do that. |
