I cant seem to find the option to run in DX10 mode. How do you enable DX10?
Im running Vista + 8800GT + premium client.

There is no DX10 mode, just DX9 and DX8. -

Edited by: Vistrix Ferocia on 04/04/2008 11:20:42 Why is there a large article on DX10 in Eve published in 06? I guess its for a future update?
Eve is listed as one of the few Direct X10 games on Wikipedia currently available...

Initially they wanted to make the Premium Client DX10/Vista only.
But then i think they realised they could do most of the cool things in DX9 and too few people had Windows Vista and a DX10 card.

At the time they developped trinity engine, they made and used stats (steam stats I remember) on what the average game user computer is and found it would be used by too few people to be worth it!
So, instead of being in DX10, trinity uses close to all possible in the last DX9. Thus making the game nicer for more people and not to loose anything in terms of quality. -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast !

Initially CCP were planning to have the premium graphics in two versions: the one we have now, and an even better looking one running under DX10. However, they eventually figured that the work involved wasn't worth it for the amount of people who were going to use it, so it got put on hold or cancelled. We will probably see a DX10 upgrade of EVE eventually, but not until it's become the norm for everyone.

Edited by: Vistrix Ferocia on 04/04/2008 15:15:27 Ok thanks.
Various gaming sites in November 07 reported that DX10 will be available in Eve in the form of a patch dated Q2 08. I hope CCP still have plans for DX10 in the near future.
The reason why people aren't set up for DX10 is because theres barely any games that support it... The same thing happened with DX8 and 9, people were forced to upgrade because games slowly made it compulsory.

Also, people aren't set up for DX 10 because Vista is, kind of... crap.

Unfortunately Microsoft will stop supporting XP some time next year. That means no more updates and security patches. At that point the viruses will eat XP alive. I plan to switch to Linux.

however they do have DX 10 models done.
the art book has fully modeled non-normal maped model that must have at least 200,000 polys.
I can only guess they dumbed them down for the trinity release and one day will release these "SUPER" models for DX10.

I must be having some sort of aberrational experience then... When I first built my 'new*' pc about 7 months ago I went with XP. Things ran OK and I was pretty happy with the performance of the machine.
Well, a few weeks ago I got wind that SP1 had been released for Vista so got a copy of ultimate and installed it on my PC to see how bad it really was/is.
To my suprise my FPS in games went up(not just EVE, HL2 saw improvement as well as other) and I have had no stability issues either. Under XP, if I tried to run 2 or more instances of EVE I would experience frequent CTD's and overall bad performance. After installing Vista I can now run 3 premium clients with acceptable FPS, 2 is no problem at all (60 fps in station, drops to around 45 in space, 35ish in busy mission deadspace), and no CTD's at all!
This is not to say I am on the Vista bandwagon, as I am still holding my breath for something bad to happen .
*PC Specs (the important ones anyway): AMD Athlon X2 5200+ dual core 4GB OCZ RAM Nvidia 8800GTS
I am blaming the increased performance under vista on the 4GB RAM. I have heard from a couple people that Vista really likes having ample RAM to play with. -=^=-
My views do not represent my alliance. TBH, my posts do not even represent my own views...I am posting while asleep. |

Well, your computer is probably running well despite Vista, rather than because of it. Let's face it, it's a bloated operating system, it's sometimes annoying, it's as buggy on average as all the other Microsoft operating systems, and we were all just getting used to the XP interface, simply because it's been around for so long (pet peeve of mine: consoles are so popular partly because the PC requires so much tinkering with, and the PC requires so much tinkering with because Microsoft can't make a good OS to save its life).
In any case, a couple years from now, we'll all be on Vista, or (hoping against hope here) Windows 7 (8?) (and hopefully that one is not bloated or too buggy).
I'm running XP Pro in regular user mode, dual 8800 GT's in SLI mode, dual LAN, 3 GB RAM, premium client, just fine too (and I define "just fine"... you know, closing my eyes when all the EVE bugs happen, overview etc.)
EDIT: I am NOT holding my breath for something bad to happen (with my computer), though. Heh heh heh. All adrenaline and worries are available for in-game pew pew moments.

People said the same thing about XP originally.
Vista isnt crap if you have a decent PC.
People need to move on sooner or later. Ive had zero problems with Vista.

There is no such thing as a 'decent' pc. Evereything becomes obsolete sooner or later and the successive versions of Windows that Gates et al come out with just eat up resources far beyond what the extra functionality is worth. I swear my PC seems to do no more than my PC 10 years ago did, despite having about 100x the resources.

You're confusing the channel availability plans with the support lifecycle. The types of support that home users require (security patches) will continue on till 2014. Please read Microsoft's Lifecycle Policy and see how it applies to XP instead of spreading FUD.

I have Vista and I don't hate it because it's bloated, I hate it because nothing ever freaking works and games that usually run well crash frequently on random occasions and some games just stop running and move at a slideshow. The only decent thing is Crysis on Very High at 30 FPS.

If you do indeed plan to switch to Linux, start now. Install a dualboot system and try how it feels. Since Linux is an entirely different OS, it takes a while to get used to it (and to get everything you had in Windows to work ;))

Both myself and my fiancee have been running Vista x64 for at least 6 months now with virtually no problems.
I can play Eve, CoD4, C&C3 and other games just fine.
She plays mostly the Sims 2 and is suffering none of the BSOD problems that XP users seem to be having (maybe that's down to user-mode drivers?)
as for systems with a lot of RAM (3.2Gigs and above) - there's NO point in having that much if your OS & BIOS don't support it (you NEED a 64-bit OS to address more than 4 gigs, 32-bit OS maps IO devices like your gfx card to RAM so you lose some to that).
my system:
Athlon 64 x2 5000+ 2GB RAM 500GB SATAII HDD Radeon X1950Pro gfx card

Oh the horror stories.
I'm going to be installing Vista 64 bit on my pc in a few weeks when my XP licence runs out.
AMD64 3700+ 2GB DDR nVidia 6800GS
Runs Eve fine at the minute, if it doesnt run it fine after that then it'll be a black day for me. ____________________________________________________

Vista x64 FTW! :D
I have used Vista since before it became retail for the masses (when the Business version was a corp only release), the only times I get BSODs is when I play around with overclocking, otherwise its rockstable. Removing some unneeded background services can do wonders ;).

I don't see what some people are complaining about with Vista. I started using Vista as my primary OS 3 months after it launched first the x32 bit version and now the x64 bit version. While there definitely a dip in performance. Its not severe by any means.
Here is what I've run on this system:
Core 2 Q6600 6GB DDR2 RAM Vista x64-Bit Geforce 8600GTS
Call of Duty 4, Crysis/Sandbox, Eve Online, C&C Kane's Wrath, Orange Box, NFS Carbon, NFS: Pro Street, BioShock etc. with no problems.
