We use ventrilo, mutch better sound quality and mutch more features. Tho it prolly eats 3 times as mutch bandwidth as TS.

Teamspeak allowes you to communicate to your fellow gamers and having fun on TS is sometimes alot more than half the fun while playing EVE.
A great bunch of people on TS make even the most boring chores fun.

My 0.2 isk:
TS in combat: can be invaluable, not that mandatory if you have ppl knowing their job.
TS for chatting:
1. I have yet to meet anyone being as chatty on TS as on chat. Including emotes and roleplaying, which is mostly impossible on TS(which is direct player to player communication), i like chats a lot more than TS.
2. Casual gaming. If i use a chat, i have no problem doing a biobreak, talking to my gf, whatever, as i cant miss anything. Along the same lines i have no prob waiting for an answer for a minute on chat, if someones busy, with TS you just drop your question into the void.
3. It is much easier to follow a multithreaded conversation on corp chat than on TS
4. TS often isolates non-native speakers to some point
5. Being on TS all the time can really annoy your RL environment
Conclusion: I personally gladly join TS during fights, but that is player-player communication. For char-char communication you can either mostly kill it, or still use the chat for, ermm, chatting.

One of my mates turned TS off when I started picking up his girlfriend thru his speakers. I must have a sexy voice if my friend was affraid I might actually succeed.
