For the last many months I've used a Catalyst, since I can fly it and I like it better than the Cormorant.
But is there something better? I have Caldari Frigate 4, Caldari Cruiser 5, Battlecruisers 5 and Caldari Battleship 4, Destroyers 1 (and minimal skillz with Gallente Frigate).
I'd like more speed, and better cargo. In particular, the destroyer is an intermediate size class-ship, and therefore doesn't get full benefit from the AB II I've fitted onto it. A cruiser with 10 MN AB II might be able to go faster than the 420 m/s or so of my destroyer, and might be able to beat the 820 (or so) m3 of cargo hold.
What ships should I look at?
What Caldari cruiser? Or Caldari frigate?
I doubt it's possible to pimp a BC to go anywhere near 420 m/s, so they're out of the question, but I can afford a Raven (and therefore any other tech 1 non-faction Caldari battleship), I just haven't bought one yet because I don't have the skillz to fly it well on missions.

EFT is your friend.
Personally I was using a cormy. But I run 2 boxes so now I role a domi with hvy drones and 3/3 tractors/salvagers, and a raven.
But honestly a destroyer is your best bet, I cant imagine you spreading your kills out so much an ab wont do the trick. or that too much more speed is going to quicken things too much.

I've used a Ferox and it works well.
High 4x Salvager 3x Tractor Beam
Mid 10MN MWD 3x Large Capacitor Battery II Cap Recharger II
Low: 4x Expanded Cargohold II
Max speed 650m/s, 900m3 cargo, cap lasts 6 minutes w/ the MWD running.

tbh 450 m/s is near the cap of what you want to go. remember that a tractor beam only pulls at 500 m/s, so if you go faster than that you will be outdistancing your wreck. ________________________________________________

As you alredy probably figured out, if you want to pimp out your salvager well beyond destroyer performnce, you should look into Amarr or Minmatar BC and BS or Megathron. 3000m3 and more cargo, cap plenty, 8 highs, MWD solves the speed (or split cargo / overdive and offline overdrives towards end).
Anything caldari is just small upgrade to your catalyst.
Alternatively, salvage in catalyst, jetcan when full, come back in industrial to pick it up. If you dont rig your salvager you can move it in that industrial when you change homes.

I use a Osprey. I don't know that its the best by any means, but I had an Osprey laying around from my noob-mining days. It's got the biggest cargohold of the frigates and cruisers (iirc).

How fast can it go? And is that with AB I, AB II or some kind of MWD?

I know that. I want the speed for when I move between "wreck clusters". My approach is (at least in theory) to AB to one "wreck cluster", then tractor in and salvage all that I can reach while my ship is stationary, then AB to the next "wreck cluster". And it's that part which is boring. Once I've done a "cluster", the next wreck will be a minimum of 22-23 seconds away, at my pitiful 420 m/s AB II speed. -- Salpad |

Edited by: Wet Ferret on 07/04/2008 01:31:37 I still use a Cormorant. If I ever upgrade it will be to a Sabre. I just can't justify using a bigger ship with how well this thing does, having a massive cargohold would be nice but... well, I tend to do 3-4 missions at once and so with all the looting I would probably end up overflowing anyway. And with all the warping around I might as well take an extra few minutes to pick it all up with a hauler.
My setup is like this:
4x Salvager 4x Small Tractor Beam 1MN Microwarpdrive II, Small Capacitor Battery II, 2x Cap Recharger II Expanded Cargohold II 3x Salvage Tackle I
Forgot to mention, the reason that I like this better than the Catalyst is that the cap lasts longer with the MWD fitted. With just an AB neither should run out of cap but with the cargo expander and rigs I need the extra speed.

There are two other active threads on page one. http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=741717 pretty much covers it for whatever type of salvaging you want.
The thing about salvaging is, you want an optimal combination of speed, capacitor strength, and cargo hold (if also looting) and Caldari ships aren't very good at either of the first two.
