I was ratting today and I warped into a belt to see rats sitting over 7'000km from the belt and flying away. What was going on here ?

More than likely it was an overview bug. Best guess you had NPCs on overview.. warped to a new location and they stayed on the overview.
An object that is over 500km away should never show up on the overview as it'd be in a different grid, needless to say 7,000 km away would certainly not be displayed unless there's a bug in the overview as described above. ____________________________ I break things.

Actually, this happens to me too, it's very common to see this happening. Sometimes a belt gets a NPC spawn which immediately starts MWDing/approaching to another belt or gate (don't ask me why). I have seen NPCs at such distances too and they weren't overview bugs. Also, I have seen grids that extend all the way to 10 000km so I don't really think this is an overview bug.
ps. It's common to see double npc spawns when this happens. The normal spawn being at near-0 to the warpin and the bugged spawn over 500km MWDing/approaching another belt or gate. _________________________________________________________

Edited by: Jorr Meditir on 11/04/2008 17:36:22 Happened to me several times as well, they could be seen all night going closer and closer another belt by mwding. And they would still be there when i returned from a swop around the other belts.
This might raise another question, how many spawns do we have out there, mwding day and night towards next belt?

I have seen this as well.
It seems connected to rats warping to other belts. Sometimes, you get 2 spawns in 1 belt by some freak timing or something. One spawn will realize its not supposed to be there, and attempt to go to a different belt, but via mwd and not warp.
Whats wierd is you CAN see them hundreds of km out, sometimes over 1000km out. their distance on overview and speed keep updating, even tho they should be off grid.

those pics show exactly what im talking about. As you can see from them, the belt has TWO spawns present....there should only ever be 1 spawn present.

This is clearly no overview bug. If your faster than them you can even catch them hundreds of kilometers away and kill them. It happens on a regular basis for many people in our corp in 0.0 belts. Suddenly NPCs are hitting MWD flying manually (not warping) to a different belt.

Edited by: NightmareX on 12/04/2008 14:19:43 That have been in EVE for ages. I remember from the days i was a carebear my self, and when i was living in 0.0 space (ASCN / LV days), then i did see a rat spawn just spawn right outside of station, and right after that they started to MWD with full speed towards something.
And when i had found out where they was MWDing, then i took a fast frig, and bookmarked a spot like 150km before them, warped back to station to get my Raven Navy Issue. Warped back to my bookmarket spot and started to shoot the bs / bc rats when they went into my lock range.
Then i killed one of them, but the rest of them went out of lock range before i had killed one of them, since the rat i was shooting used to slow down a little when i was aggroing it.
Then i had to get my fast frig again and then bookmark a spot 150km before them and then get my Raven Navy Issue again to kill the rest of them when they got into my lock range.
And i had to continue to do this until the whole spawn was killed.
Was kinda funny though, but i'll guess it's a bug of some sort.

I have seen rats just outside a regular space station in several High-sec solar systems. The do move fast to some unknown destination, much faster than I can go in my BC, so MWD/AB seems likely. At first I also thought it was an overviw bug, but it was not.

They are getting killed, day after day. No wonder they're trying to get away

7Q-, Arnola stargate. Has a grid of over 850km. And I remember systems where you would just dissapear of grid 100km of the stargate. Pretty lame if you are trying to get a snipe spot for your fleet tbh...
If grids are supposed to be 500km, I suggest you look in to them, because they are no way near that.. |

I've not had them display as that far off much (does happen sometimes - they stay on overview - and I've had things on the overview that were 600km+ before quite often) but I think he's reporting that the rats were that far from the belt, not the overview messing up.
I've had it several times when rats appear at a belt and MWD towards another belt until the next downtime. I've had to catch them in an interceptor and web them 1 by 1 so my alt can kill them :D |

Yeah, it is weird. Are NPC Belt-Rats finally getting intelligent now? (Or rather staying, since they've been doing this since I really started playing in '06) |

I've seen this happenning countless times now. Though one was a bit funny. Spawn in 0.0 belt suddenly engaged their MWDs and headed somewhere into blackness, but continued on shooting. Furthermore, when they got away for 700kms, they still had a lock on me and still managed to hit me with missiles, from 700km range. We got a corpmate with an inty to mwd there, warped on him and killed the whole spawn :)
Although this usually has something to do with 'double spawns' as we nicknamed this phenomenon. A new spawn of rats spawns in belt, then the old one starts moving away like this.

I've chased some of these rats, and my findings are... interesting. The grid eventually stopped if I went in a straight line, but then it would start again. Then it would stop, then start again. Every few hundred KMs it would do that. But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started.

Living in 0.0 has its quirks, including the occasional BS/frig spawn right outside one of our POS's. I had the rare opportunity to test out my starbase defence skills on a pack of rats only to see them engage the MWD off into the deep blue yonder...
They were 8000km away before I gave up watching (finished playing with the POS) and went to bed.
That overview bug happens way too often in belts :( |

IT is very common, but not as annoying, as the bug where all rats dissappear.
They just dissappear, usually after i have spent some time hitting them.

Yea, I have seen this often and was shocked when I went back to cloak in my deep safe spot whilst ratting in 0.0 to find an NPC spawn (2 BS and 3 BC) waiting for me ffs

Seen it often.... I think they just decide to change belts the hard way rather than warp.
Would be a bit of a ****er to watch a faction spawn race off into the sunset now that I think about it :)

That's actually not a bug, rats _do_ warp off from belts. They just don't bother with all that aligning and accelerating crap us mortals are encumbered.
You can find the same spawn, in another belt, in exactly the same condition they left the previous belt.

Ive seen it happen before, and it wasn't an overview bug because I've been in a gang and we all noticed it. The rats were over 1000km away and still on our overview.

yes, ive seen the serpentis rats in syndicate do it, and the sansha in catch, (do they even have MWD?) it isnt an overview bug, i caught them and killed them.. sort of odd though =D this out of all will remain, they have lived and have tossed; so much of the game will be gain, though the gold and the dice have been lost. |

I have had rats run away from a belt before a long time ago. I chased them down in a navitas and caught them 150km away from the belt with my single drone
Also, I had rats 'warp' between belts today. I found a faction spawn in a belt, went and got a combat ship, came back, and the shadow serpentis destroyer disappeared right before I could get in range. I rat a bit more and later find it in a different belt. Unfortunately it dropped a crappy passive faction armour hardener. ========== This is a signature, a cunning ploy used by forum warriors! |

I've been seeing somthing like this whiling mining Ice in High-Sec lately... Not sure if all ice belts are vertical to the universe plane or not, (I'm rather new and only visited one ice belt so far) but I have a spot staked out at the very top of one.
NPC's will spawn anywhere along the entire belt (350km ish) But when they go into attack mode, they'll lock and shoot, but normally by the time the 1st missiles hit me, the NPC's will have just plain *teleported* to the bottom of the belt and are now over 200km away... with an active target lock and still landing shots... then they'll *teleport* back to my local area and resume like nothing happened. Normally the teleport cycle on;y happens once or twice a spawn, but there was one time me and a Hulk @ the bottom of the belt played pingpong with them for the better part of 30 mins before they stayed still long enuff to kill. pewpew? |
