Each race has a subject that all it's names are based on (it's not just the BS).
Caldari is animals (mainly birds),
Amarr is holy kinda stuff,
Minmatar is norse stuff (I think),
and Gallente is celtic stuff (again, I think, my mythology is a bit rusty).

Gallente is mostly based on greek mythological names. Hyperion was in fact, a greek Titan(godlike being).

All the races seem to have an underlying theme which is a little more general than what you've stated.
Amarr - Religion (Prophecy, Damnation, Armageddon)
Minmatar - Storms/Weapons/"Dogs" (Cyclone, Typhoon and Tempest)(Rapier, Sabre and Claymore) (Hyena, Hound, Wolf)
Gallente - Greek Mythology (Eos, Thanatos, Hyperion)
Caldari - Birds (Merlin, Falcon, Rook, Raven)
However, it seems like the Amarr are the only race that actually fully stick to their theme. All the other races have names that blantantly don't follow their theme.
Minmatar - Bellicose (the word meaning warmongering?)
Caldari - Scorpion (last I checked, they were not birds) and some mythical half bird creatures (Harpy, Griffin) and the Ferox (ferocious?)
The Gallente battleships seem to be just made up names (except the Hyperion). ---------------------------------------- Our allies have forsaken honor. Now we walk alone...

Minmatar Capital Ships are Norse mythology.
Ragnarok, the Norse apocalypse. Naglfar, in Norse mythology, was a ship made entirely from the fingernails and toenails of the dead. (Taken from Wikipedia) Hel, is the lowest realm in the Yggdrasil world tree. Fenrir, in Norse mythology, Fenrir or Fenrisulfr is a wolf, the son of Loki and the giantess Angrbo=a. Fenrir is bound by the gods, but is ultimately destined to grow too large for his bonds and swallow Odin whole during the course of Ragnar÷k. He will be slain by Odin's son, Vi=arr, who will slice his belly open, avenging his father. (Taken from Wikipedia) ---- In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move. - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Addams |

Gallente are named after Latin and Greek Mythology and words
Dominix comes from Domini (Master, Lord for Latin)
Megathron is a Greek word and means big throne (also was implying the great King, since a great king would sit on a great throne to show his power).
Hyperion is a Greek Mythology Titan. ------- Nobody can be exactly like me. Even I have trouble doing it. |

Edited by: Emroth on 11/04/2008 17:32:04 Dont know much about other ships, but as a norwegian and quite interested in the norse mythology i can say Minmatar ships are quite often named after Norse mythology / norse words.
Hel - Hell, short and simple. The word 'hell' comes from the norse word 'Hel'. Nidhoggur - a worm thats beneath the earth, trying to destroy the roots belonging to 'the Tree of life', Yggdrasil. Sleipnir - Odin, norse god, had a 8 feeted steed and Sleipnir was his name. Naglfar - The name of the largest ship, made by nails from dead people. The word 'Nagl' is a norse word and even in the norwegian language today, meaning nail. Huginn - One of the two ravens Odin had. Munin - Same as above. Vargur - Means wolf. Fenrir - Also known as the Fenriswolf, yet a mammal, a wolf from norse mythology. This wolf is strapped in chains still, and if the wolf gets loose Ragnarok will start. Ragnarok - The vikings name of doomsday.
Also we can see that many of the Matarian ships are mammals, Hound, Hyena, Vargur, etc.
There, lesson over, when other mates where playing football i was reading books, finally i got it put to some use! :)

French words don't make for very interesting names, since the majority of the playerbase speaks English, and French has a lot of similar words to English and no mythology to take names from. :P ---- In the beginning the Universe was created. Bad Weather: Tempest, Hurricane, Typhoon, etc. All BS and BC.
Vague or Miscellaneous: Bellicose, Claw, Wreathe, Prowler, Vigil, etc. * * * In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

While most of this is correct, the one thing that's been missed entirely is that the Caldari ships are not birds, nor animals, they are creatures (both real and mythical) that are strong, if not the best of, hunters. They are all creatures that will prey upon other creatures, including their own kind if food is scarce.
All of these ship class names apply across the board, not just to Battleships. So, to revise the original statement:
Amarr: named after archetypes or events that are common in Religion Minmatar: named after forces in general, not just forces of nature (a burst is a force, but not really a force of nature) Gallente: named after creatures and people of myth and lore, mostly greek or roman Caldari: named after Creatures of Prey

If I were in charge of naming Caldari ships, the Raven would be an Eagle, the Falcon would be a raven and an eagle would be an albatros.
Afterall, why the hell is a caldari battleship named after a carrion bird? Seems a better name for the destroyer given their main function these days is to salvage.

Well Greeks do have a way to survive. And i guess that the original description of Gallente was trying to paint them as EU population mainly (where the French and German are the main axis somehow).
So for German heritance it has the Gallente Federation sign, and for French origins has the description of the race.
Greeks and Romans have the meaningful part lol ------- Nobody can be exactly like me. Even I have trouble doing it. |

Gallente and Minmatar names really can't be generalized... all of the Minmatar capitals are from Norse Mythology, and a lot are named after various canines, felines and strangely theres the Mastodon and Mammoth, two elephants, along with assorted English words for chaos, violence and destruction. ---- In the beginning the Universe was created. A/ your thinking of megaTron, not megaTHron
B/ in the original cartoons and toys he was modled on a walther PPK pistol (same type James Bond was fond of), but as this would make little or no sense for the most reacent film, it was altered to a Jet, based on fantasy, and was supposed to be a common type on the Transformers homeworrld.....so no wheels.
C/ the megathron has NO wheels anyway... Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward. Whoever cannot take care of themself without that law is both. |

Amarr are western religious themed. Did you notice that the Khanid variants sound eviller than the Viziam and Carthum ships?

Mostly birds or creatures of flight would have been a better example.
And of course there is the badger.... right. And the Caracal, which is a cat that hunts small birds. I think out of all of them the names of the Badger and Scorpion fit the Caldari the least.
Also, as a side note, it would be awesome if the red underlining spell check would not highlight Eve-related words like Caldari and Ferox as being misspelled every time I type them.
