I am running level 4's in a Domi and now that my tank is pretty good I am working on T2 drones. My t2 scout drones will finish in an hour, after that should I train up sentries or heavies to t2 first. I can see the value of both and am wavering on this.
So, for a mission Domi, t2 heavies or sentries first?

Just a warning I'm a newb when it comes to anything bigger than medium drones...
There's a really good thread on drones I suggest you have a read of, if you haven't.
I pretty much asked the same question thou here, and forum warriors reply pretty much convinced me. He also makes a few points about I hadn't thought about otherwise. So I'm training for sentries.
Yes, heavies do more dps, but apparently the sentries insta-dps mean in combat you'll actually do more. Nope... I haven't field tested that... Audita et altera pars |

I suggest Sentries first if you're accustomed to using Sentries as your primary weapon. The only time I actually use Heavies is when the mission drops me on top of the rats and I need time to pull the rats away from the warp-in point for a second attempt :)

Once you have the medium scout drones and decent supporting skills, I suggest going for the sentries first. It adds some nice range to your Domi and should speed up your mission running, since you won't have travel time for those BSs circling at 37-50km. ------------

Once you are comfortable with running lvl4's you can slap 2 sentry range rigs and one sentry dmg rig on your Domi, add in a drone tracking/range comp and you got yourself enough range on the thermal drones to hit at a pretty respectable range, and do more dmg than hwy drones without the flight time, good stuff.
The tanking suffers ofc, but for most missions one LAR is enough.

Edited by: Mogren on 12/04/2008 13:42:34 Although sentries do give you insta-DPS, I trained for Ogre IIs first. Whenever I do a level 4 I aggro the entire stage and wait for them to get to their optimal ranges around me (4-50km). This usually does not take more than a minute or two. Once they are in range, I release the Ogre IIs and kick back. The purpose of letting all the NPCs into range is that it makes salvaging/looting a breeze afterwards. With active hardeners and 2x LAR II permarunning, I have been able to permatank everything except Worlds Collide so it works out on the tanking end too.
Its all up to playstyle though really.

My sentry drone setup for the Dominix is as follows:
4x 350mm rails 2x Drone Link Augmentors
1x Omnidirectional Tracking CPU 4x Cap Recharger IIs
4x Rat Specific Hardener IIs 1x DCU II 1x MAR II 1x LAR II
2x CCC rigs 1x Sentry Damage Augmentor ------------

Sentries, with one reservation: if you plan to afk a lot of missions, the permatank / heavy drone model is better. Otherwise, go sentries, which undoubtedly kill faster.

For afk purposes you can still run a dual LAR / 4 hardener perma tank with 2 omnis (don't bother with less than 2, you need the range) and thus efficiently use garde IIs to destroy everything but nearby frigs .. so it's not like sentries are totally useless for (semi-) afking, you just need to switch to lights once everything else is dead. It probably won't be much faster than heavies on the BSs though, because if you're not there to switch to longer ranged sentries for the stuff in ~50km orbits the dps at optimal+falloff of gardes tends to suck. Though you could run 3 hardener / 2 LAR / 3 omnis and utterly annihilate ( ) everything inside 50km, the tank probably often won't be enough for full stage aggro on anything but Guristas.
To conclude, if you're not mostly afk, go for sentries. Since when I still used my Domi and first got t2 sentries I can count the occasions I used heavies for pve on one hand. Just be sure to give them enough omnis to shine, as long as you're not running a gun/gank Domi.

Let me answer that question by saying my Ogre IIs are collecting dust in station every since I trained Sentry Drones V.
A very few missions need them, but I find for most missions the combination of Wardens/Gardes/Mediums/Lights works very very well. Wardens snipe anything past 40km and Gardes do excellent damage in the 25-40km range. For Sanshas or Bloods use Curators instead.
Angels though you'll probably want the T2 Berserkers to complement T2 Bouncers, I haven't run AE4 in months, haven't pulled it again since it was reintroduced.
Oh, and Sentries require you to actively keep them under control, you can't really AFK with Sentries, as they WILL decide that they want to shoot that trigger spawn over there and get you killed. |

Sentries. I never use heavy drones these days, except against close orbiting Angel battleships, cos Bouncers don't have very good tracking.
With 2 or more omnidirectional tracking links, Garde II's hit orbiting cruisers and larger just fine. I normally carry a set of Gardes for short range and a set of Curators or Wardens for long range, depending on rat type.

Sentries all the way. You can snipe probably half the level 4 missions out there, which means you don't need as much tank, which also means you get finished faster and make more money b/c you can fit for gank.
The poster who mentioned the sentry damage rig and two drone scope rigs is exactly right - that is exactly how I have my Domi rigged. I use 3 omnidirectional tracking links and fit a sensor booster for longer range targets.
If, however, you really are set on using heavies, you will want a drone nav computer to speed up the travel time. I still use heavies on missions like Damsel in Distress where the BS's surround you at very close range. But in Worlds Collide there really is nothing more fun than sniping with sentries at 100km outside of their missile range. You can just imagine the NPC commanders pulling out their hair.

I ran WC after finishing sentry5... I'd forgotten how annoying it is when the npcs just keep flying and flying and flying AWAY from you. They got out to 140km + before I got annoyed and refit a Mega for up and close blaster revenge....
anyways, Sentries > ogres now that I can use t2 sentries...

Interesting. If I may ask, at what range did you engage them? I've found that at 105km or more they sometimes flee, but at <100km they usually attack instead.
