Every time I crash (yes it does happen =) I have to reselect my character. That takes alot of extra time and I bet it produces unnecessary server load. I also happen to know that Tank CEO, the poor guy, logs on and off with his alts alot to feel safer. How about making us both happy?
Why not two options?
* Regular logon with character selection screen and news * Log on character _______
Maybe the ini-file can store last character fast-logged? The news can be read from a concord newsboard, so no loss, a faster log-on and reduced server load.

You think about a option at the login screen to select your char already there? So you only have to enter your password and skip selection screen.
Interesting idea. Makes a little thing easier. I pray that CCP listen your words.

there was a line you could add to the ini file to do this, but it no longer works (for me, anyway).
wantToSelectCharacterID=[insert number from end of website Character Info url]
but as i said, it no longer works for me.

Agreed. I play my primary 95% of the time.
Since this prevents players from seeing news, have the news show up on game load on interface perhaps, if changed from last logon? --- Mining & Transport - Logistics Division - Hadean Drive Yards

I wonder how many "AYE" votes a suggestion requires for CCP to actually put it on an agenda somewhere? This is one of the few suggestions I've seen that actually has a (so far) 100% yes replies.
I mean you usually get a number of no way in hell, plus some who have their own version, why not log in using uhhhmm a java applet uhm in the colour purple...
But no sir, just yes so far, it's gotta worth something CCP

Edited by: CrashOverride on 01/05/2004 09:48:07 Hell No! If you are going to do this, maybe some sort of java app in the color... purple. _____________________________________________________ Life Is Only 9 Months Long, Everything After That Is Death. |

Too new ideas seldom get that much response I guess.
It would be good to know if this would decrease database load or not since CCP stated that the login is the most database intensive operation of them all.

I would assume not. You're still pulling in all the data for your player - the first step is most likely a small one, just pulling in portrait config, name and location of char - the second one pulls in assets, corp membership, cash, skills, skills progress, etc. Assets themselves are probably a huge drain that doesn't occur before character-select.
I still want this feature tho :) --- Mining & Transport - Logistics Division - Hadean Drive Yards

After beta, it was possible to save password.
But now because of security (customers that don't protect from trojan, virus), it is preferable that the customers retype the password than having it saved on the hard drive. Good idea... but does that extra 5seconds really matter?
I roleplay... there is this computer game called "Earth - The First Genesis" where i play a character in the early 21st century. |

It's not the password typing I want kicked, it's the character selection. And from LOGIN to, "activating character"..."entering space", it takes lots more than 5 seconds for me. And yeah, if you ever did PVP, you know why seconds matter...
I simply want loading of news and getting characters to go, unnecessary bandwidth and time imo.

There is an exploit involving logging on and off a lot... Not allowed to discuss exactly what that exploit is, but it's there and people are using it. No need to promote it. --
