Edited by: Ler Rhan on 17/04/2008 05:04:03 Hey,
I used to play Eve back in 2003 for a while then I played some in 2005 and I've decided to come back. My old character(who I don't have anymore) flew Caldari missile boats, including a raven. So I've started a new character, an Amarr engineer and I have been training learning skills but soon it will come time to choose what race's ships I want to focus on. I'm thinking about spending most my time doing small group pvp, and either doing missions or ratting for isk. I would like the ability to solo pvp as well. I'm very interested in battleships, HACs, and the covert ops/black ops line of ships. Maybe some EW on the side. I am also a looks *****, and Caldari and Minmatar ships (with exception of the Scorpion) offend my sense of fashion.
So I am leaning towards the Gallente as the Deimos looks awesome, and their ships seem more versatile, while most of the Amarr ships are big laser boats. Also I don't see a lot of people complaining about Gallente. On the other hand, lasers really look appealing, I've gotten tired of reloading stuff on my old character. And no one will disagree that a gankgeddon can put out some serious damage in a group. I am good at managing drones, but sometimes I don't want to bother with the additional hassle. What do you guys recommend?

Amarr and Gallente play very similar. Both heavily use turrets and drones (obviously Gallente more heavily). Both of their turret types use lots of cap. Both armor tank (amarr get the better tanking bonus IMO) Amarr have the Khanid ships which is a nice change of pace. Gallente have an edge in soloability since they almost always fit MWD, and get more mids, as well as bigger dronebays, but you can solo as Amarr, it just takes a different mindset. Amarr shine beautifully in gangs as they are generally tougher nuts to *****, and don't have to MWD up to their targets before doing damage.
Obviously EM damage type is still subpar but it is more playable now.
I trained both. Actually I trained all 4, although I only trained Gallente for T2 BS, and Amarr for Recon and HAC. I can T2 fit any races BC though. After trying em all my choice is to switch races every couple days to keep things fresh. -- Distortion| Distortion 2 Preview |

edit: I thought my original post made since but it really didn't to summarize, don't be afraid to cross-train once in awhile. It's fun to switch up which race's ships you fly from time to time, even if it only takes the form of a temporary excursion in someone else's racial frigate. |

Hi Ler Rhan, and welcome back to the game.
If you want PvP, every race has their strengths - but I think Gallente would be best for you. They have many blaster-boats which are very powerful and deal great DPS.
I don't know what fighting style you prefer - but usually players would solo PvP in a very high dps ship if possible, either that or a really hard to kill ship. If your ship is not-that-good at tanking and damage, you will have issues solo'ing without support - so you go with strengths.
A common solo PvP ship for the Gallente would probably be the Deimos, Ishtar, Dominix, or the Megathron. The Megathron and Deimos are usually very high powered blaster boats - so it's sort of a kill or be killed rule with them. As for the Ishtar and Dominix, they can often times be tanked out and rip everything to pieces with their drones.
If you remember a Nos-Domi - that is a good example of a PvP Dominix. They don't work as they did a long time ago, but they have not changed that much - and are still very capable of solo'ing or working in a group.
If you want PVE I would recommend using Gallente drone boats, since you can choose damage types and you have damage bonuses on them.
The Amarr you will not be able to get incredibly high amounts of dps out of until you have a lot of SP which will make that possible. They do not have as as many ships capable of matching the damage of the more deadly Gallentean ships (Megathron, Astarte) - however I wouldn't call all of them terrible.
A Pilgrim or a Curse set up properly can be a large threat to a enemy so long you are in a group. Your target can't do much without capacitor :)
The Amarrians have two HAC's that are not that bad either, good balanced of speed and firepower. They also have some very good battleships - and more recently the Apocalypse was tweaked to act as a efficient sniper boat now. The Abaddon is also probably the hardest t1 ship to kill in the entire game - if your more of a tanked now, kill later player, you will like the Abaddon.
The only serious issue I have with the Amarrians is that their lasers only do EM and Thermal damage - so you may have serious issues fighting a tanked Gallentean or another Amarrian player. Also in terms of PVE, you would find it will take forever and a day to finish missions with rats tanked out against EM and Thermal - most rat's tend to not be weakest in EM. Angel Cartel for example you may find would take forever and a day to kill compared to any other npc. |

Edited by: Mithfindel on 17/04/2008 06:48:54 If you have support (preferably logistics, so all your cap goes to guns) a gank-fit Abaddon does deal a huge amount of damage, too. It has enough HP buffer to last for a moment even when alone and for the first minutes deals an awesome amount of firepower. When in a gang supported by logistics and tacklers it is an outstanding ship. |

I would say Gallente would be the best choice for you. With drones they are very flexible with damage types which is what makes the Dominix such a great PVE ship, not to mention that it tanks very well.
The PVP boats of the Gallente are great as well. Minmatar are also really cool.

To make a long story short, both have awesome ships. Amarr ships are usually more skill-intensive and tank better, whereas Gallente ships are usually easier to fly and a bit faster. Both have EW that is fairly useless on non-dedicated ships, and IS useless against missile boats. Both have secondary bonuses on their EW ships that are awesome. Amarr ships look better. Amarr ships are usually more engaging as they have to manage cap and transversal more than their Gallente counterparts.
Basically, it comes down to 'do you plan on playing a long time?', 'do you mind flying ugly-ass ships?', and 'do you prefer (relatively) mindless combat?' We need this. Badly. |

I fly max skilled Gallente ships. I'm currently training up Amarr. More range, same DPS. Gank Geddon and plate Abaddon are great.

Gallente has the fastest shuttle @ 600 m/s, Amarr has lasers. Its really a toss up.........

Shuttles are the only ships not requiring any skills. And anyway, who uses the shuttle to do anything but warping? If it gets caught on a gate, it won't outrun an interceptor anyway.

Ummm .... err the Damnation will tear a astarte or eos to shreds. While amarr lack gal dps there tanks are far superior in bonuses and slots. With gal also your dps has to be up close so you have to mwd to target and if you get tackled out of range your in BIG trouble. You can solve this with drones which are nice but to be really good they take 4.5mil sp + (a little less then turrets) and can be popped. |

I've got 2 PvP chars, one Amarr and one Gallente trained.
Both races have pro's and con's, but I think I prefer Amarr..... Bear in mind that my point of view is PvP from an alliance warfare perspective (ie. fleet and smaller gang warfare, not solo).
Amarr has some of the best smaller ships in the game, which is important if you're starting a character. The Crusader/Malediction are excellent for each their role (the Mal has very high in-warp speed, and the Cru has very good damage), where the Gallente interceptors are lacking. Assault ships are not much use, but the Amarr ones are imho slight better than the Gallente. For HAC's Amarr win hands down! The new Sacrilege is just mean! Amarr logistics is win, Gallente logistics is medium! Both races recons are pretty much fail, though Gallente are slightly better than Amarr.
And finally, the REAL reason I think Amarr rules over Gallente in the smaller ships, is the Harbinger (tier-2 battlecruiser). This ship is (when properly fitted) imho very close to being the best support-killer in the game!
For T1 ships below battlecruiser, I have no idea.
For battleships, its a coin-toss. The Mega and the Apoc are fairly evenly balanced, but the Apoc just had its range boost which tilts the balance their way I think.
For capitals, imho Gallente are better, but that's probably not a big priority for a new character.

Honestly, go with your first instinct (gallente). All races ships can be fitted/flown in such a way that you will succeed at pretty much any task you try, some will have the edge over their competition but ships in eve in general are very flexible and you can find a way to do what you need to do.
It's important to remember that ships change - they get patched tweaked and balanced so making a decision based on which is 'best' now does not mean that you can feel safe in your 'bestness'.
So my 2isk is just go with what appeals and dont try to analyse which is better.

Plus we have exotic dancers, and when you hit that first Wrecking shot with Neitron Blaster cannon II for 2500 damage, then you will under stand why we are the DPS boats of the game
EDIT: that embarrassed smily is the amar who is ashamed to be exited over such things becuase he would usually be whiped for showing excitment... --------------------
