Original Article: "The new CEO of Virgin Media, Neil Berkett, has openly stated in an interview that they think net neutrality is ôa load of *******sö and claimed they're already doing deals to deliver some peopleÆs content faster than others. They would then put websites and services that don't pay Virgin in the "slow lane", meaning those sites would load slowly and cause most users to give up using them, feeling forced to use whatever Virgin wants to push through their network.
This is not the first time an internet provider infringes upon net neutrality, but it is the first time that an ISP so brutally states that they simply plan to limit internet access to a television-like system in which the access provider completely regulates the content you have access to.
Virgin Media has over 3.5 million customers in the UK and the real danger is that when they start applying this system to their network, all major internet providers around the globe will soon follow the trend. Because this is exactly what major ISP's have been wanting to do for years.
But we can stop it.
If the masses of the internet react against this, we will set an example of what happens when one provider tries to take away our freedom. We will make it very clear that any ISP who tries to infringe upon net neutrality will see its popularity go down the drain because the users don't accept it. And we'll see to it that only the providers who care about sa***uarding our internet freedom have our support.
Speak out in any way you can and spread the word." (http://forum.ragezone.com/f71/keep-virgin-destroying-internet-386359/ - There's a bigger source for this article)
Well one ISP finally got the berries to actually say this publically. Spread the word guys, this is serious. If you happen to be subscribed to Virgin, write to them as a customer and tell them what you think about this.
The internet today is the biggest source of free information on the planet, letting this happen ultimately leads to the companies who pay the most control what you think, watch, and read. Do you really want this to happen? |

you're assuming the average Internet user might actually notice a difference or be informed enough to understand or even care, sadly |

The elderly in Britian which make up a surprising amount of internet users here, unfortunatly just know enough to know they dont need to add http://www. before every web address.....and thats the cream of the tech savvy amongst the masses.
Getting them to stop using Virgin will be impossible as many will not be able to grasp the concept that they are being sold out.

It sounds like a scare tactic to be to be honest. By all means do what needs to be done to make them change their minds but I seriously doubt that net nutriality will ever truely be threatened. I mean the problem with it is that its far too easy for your compitition to run an add like:
"Virgin media forces you to look at what they want you to look at! Well we dont! Sign up today and surf the entire web as you see fit!"

Virgin have since announced that they didn't mean it the way it was reported and have no intention to throttle their customers. Check The Register, just search for Virgin. ---- Infiniband can do more than just prevent lag |

But they already do throttle connections. Just now they do so neutrally with no regard to content of the traffic and just whack the speed of the top 5% of users across the board.
Seems to me these companies need to stop complaining and start investing in upgrading what seems to be the UK's seriously lacking data backbone structure.

I find it sad that people always seem to want to destroy one of the world's last free forums(no not the eve forums, the internet).
If this is a petition I sign it.
