You broke it!
It was working earlier, but I just caught them in the act myself. There's no reason for it to be down (no service outage warnings from QuestionPro) so consider them On Notice! Just as soon as I can connect to complain...
(FYI the survey isn't down yet, so if you are having trouble getting through please try back a little later) |

That was a little more effort then I had envisioned with no reward (I.E. Survey results displayed as payment for wading thru the survey).
Also if you are trying to prove or disprove the whole "More young leaders in MMORPG's" then you need to be sure to measure the ratios as well. In other words... if you have 1000 people, and only 3 of them are over the age of 30,, and all 3 of those are in leadership positions,,, then even if you have 300 other leaders all under 30,,, you do NOT have more young leaders...percentage wise.... which is I think what you are getting at?
Being a leader in Eve takes far more then just combat skills. You need economic, personnel, and diplomatic skills as well. These skills are learned over time in the real world and applied to the game.
Here is the rub.... you can learn these skills in game too!! Seriously. But, it would take just as much time as in the real world.

It took me long enough to take the survey. Being in the corp leadership I should add my three cents and see how it comes out.

I would have started saying random things just like this but you have to keep in mind that in a real research project the participants are only given enough information to reach their tasks to either support or not support the hypothesis placed forward regarding the topic.
I am looking forward to seeing the results, in detail, when the author submits them for peer review. I have considered doing a number of surveys through EVE and other MMO's but I never really had a topic that I cared enough about =P ---

I took the survey.
My answers were rather similar, as I usually work and play with teams of peers.

A survey in which the subjects are self-selected?
Please tell me this is just for fun and not an indication of how scientific standards have fallen since I got my experimental psych degree 25 years ago. |

Excellent survey, good question base.
I pretty much expected how my answers would pan out and they did for the most part, despite intriguing similarities.
The results should be interesting indeed. "I got soul but I'm not a soldier" |

Don't worry, I come from a program with a strong base in statistics and proper research methods, so no silly/misleading/wrong results like "Gaming CAUSES increased Leader skills in ALL people of the world! Sign up your children today!" will come from this. While it is a bit of a side project, that doesn't automatically marginalize it.
Let's be honest though, all surveys have selection problems and/or biases in completion. As an example, even if I talked CCP into forcing all players to complete a survey (else be banned), at least some of the people who filled out the survey wouldn't answer it naturally/truthfully. And there would still be a few people who refused to fill it out. They would likely differ on some level from those who did. These aren't issues that have changed in the last 25 years.
I just like to think folks are a bit more aware of the research pitfalls these days. Okay, some of us are -- I won't go nearly so far as to say everyone uses statistics in a proper manner! |

well plus your choice here isn't between doing a randomly selected/sampled survey and doing a self-selected one, its between doing a self-selected one or none at all. as cheevy points out you're not going to get a random sampling, even if you could get CCP to impose draconian measures on players. So, being an academic, i'd have to say given the choice between imperfect science and no science, i'll take imperfect science. (and i do) |

Maybe a year or two into playing EVE, I was contacted randomly by someone ingame and asked questions about various things, ranging from acts of violence to helping people. I think this guy was Nick Yee, but I'm not sure. Anyway, a few years later, I got a mail back stating he had finished his thesis etc, gave it a look and was quiet surprised as to the quality of the whole thing.
It's cool to see that this particular survey was partly inspired by his work. It's a nice insight to see how different / alike MMORPG life and real life are in terms of how people act. ┌--------------------------------+º Kojee º½--------------------------------┐
