Hey folks!
I have a 5-10 minute survey studying leadership behaviors among MMORPG players and would greatly appreciate your participation if you are 18 or older. No personal or identifying information is being collected, and once the study is done I'll share the overall results with the community.
Why?
I am a graduate student in industrial & organizational psychology (and a long time gamer/EVE denizen) and one of my research interests is leadership. I would like to see what links there might be between game and real world leadership and bring some academic love to MMORPGs in general.
The first page of the survey link has more information about the study as well as contact info if you have any questions.
Thanks for your help and fly safe!
PS: I am not associated with CCP in any capacity, but I thank them for their gracious assistance!

It's an interesting survey, and it's pretty well-done. If more surveys looked like that, maybe people would take time to do them?
P.S. Yes, I did finish it, and I think I learned something.

Done.
Bump for an interesting questionnaire about an interesting subject.
The outcome of good leadership is relatively easy to define, but working out all the different facets of leadership behaviour is a bugger.
I'd also say that some rl leaders can't be eve leaders as to be the latter you need a certain dedication and game knowledge.

VERY good survey.
IF any proper alliance/corp leader would score well on that first page and I could trust him to actually be that way, including most others in charge of that corp/alliance I might actually be inclined to join a 0.0 alliance again.
Till then, since I don't want to be used/backstabbed/milked I'll remain in high sec doing my own thing.

I was actually surprised at how different I answered the two pages. But then, I'm not in a leadership position out of EVE. |

I guess that the survey will show whether that is the case and provide a basis for conjecturing why that may be.
Anyway, I found it very interesting. |

That's why people play MMORPG's, because you can be different from RL. In real life you can be hampered and held back from becoming what you can be. in MMO's the only one standing in your way to become good/important/influential is yourself. |

It's a good thing you make this poll, as you bring a certain awarness for this issue into the eve community. Leadership skills are a key factor in success of corps or ops.
If i ever joined a corp again, the most important factor would not be size/location/onlinetimes/alliance/politics etc. but i'd look at their leaders and FCs and try to figure out whether they are skilled in leadership.

Thanks to everyone who has had a chance to take the survey so far (keep 'em coming!) and for the encouraging remarks!
One person pointed out they weren't in a leadership position. If you fall into that category (by definition, that's most people) I still need your info! It helps paint the broad picture of leadership in & out of MMORPGs.
Fun & exciting trivia: the average complete time is currently about 9 minutes. |

I did one page, but using the format of askintg the same questions in a lengthy format for a second example of leadership made me lose interest. Leadership is leadership. Period. Its no different for me when I am leading a team of 42 scientists in the business world, or if i am leading a small team in EVE. (or a large alliance in DAOC).
I think your survey needs to be edited for length and made more cohesive. Yes, space is big and, it's cold. |

That was a little more effort then I had envisioned with no reward (I.E. Survey results displayed as payment for wading thru the survey).
Also if you are trying to prove or disprove the whole "More young leaders in MMORPG's" then you need to be sure to measure the ratios as well. In other words... if you have 1000 people, and only 3 of them are over the age of 30,, and all 3 of those are in leadership positions,,, then even if you have 300 other leaders all under 30,,, you do NOT have more young leaders...percentage wise.... which is I think what you are getting at?
Being a leader in Eve takes far more then just combat skills. You need economic, personnel, and diplomatic skills as well. These skills are learned over time in the real world and applied to the game.
Here is the rub.... you can learn these skills in game too!! Seriously. But, it would take just as much time as in the real world.

I would have started saying random things just like this but you have to keep in mind that in a real research project the participants are only given enough information to reach their tasks to either support or not support the hypothesis placed forward regarding the topic.
I am looking forward to seeing the results, in detail, when the author submits them for peer review. I have considered doing a number of surveys through EVE and other MMO's but I never really had a topic that I cared enough about =P ---

Don't worry, I come from a program with a strong base in statistics and proper research methods, so no silly/misleading/wrong results like "Gaming CAUSES increased Leader skills in ALL people of the world! Sign up your children today!" will come from this. While it is a bit of a side project, that doesn't automatically marginalize it.
Let's be honest though, all surveys have selection problems and/or biases in completion. As an example, even if I talked CCP into forcing all players to complete a survey (else be banned), at least some of the people who filled out the survey wouldn't answer it naturally/truthfully. And there would still be a few people who refused to fill it out. They would likely differ on some level from those who did. These aren't issues that have changed in the last 25 years.
I just like to think folks are a bit more aware of the research pitfalls these days. Okay, some of us are -- I won't go nearly so far as to say everyone uses statistics in a proper manner! |

well plus your choice here isn't between doing a randomly selected/sampled survey and doing a self-selected one, its between doing a self-selected one or none at all. as cheevy points out you're not going to get a random sampling, even if you could get CCP to impose draconian measures on players. So, being an academic, i'd have to say given the choice between imperfect science and no science, i'll take imperfect science. (and i do) |

Maybe a year or two into playing EVE, I was contacted randomly by someone ingame and asked questions about various things, ranging from acts of violence to helping people. I think this guy was Nick Yee, but I'm not sure. Anyway, a few years later, I got a mail back stating he had finished his thesis etc, gave it a look and was quiet surprised as to the quality of the whole thing.
It's cool to see that this particular survey was partly inspired by his work. It's a nice insight to see how different / alike MMORPG life and real life are in terms of how people act. ┌--------------------------------+º Kojee º½--------------------------------┐
