Just signed up after the trial, and i'm in the following situation:
Cant progress due to training taking so bloody long
Got about 2 million isk, an iteron 2, tristan, imicus, and another frigate (cant remember the name but it has a big pointy horn/nob on the front)
Done a bunch of mining and have 3 secure cans anchored
Done a bunch of agent missions, but cant do any more as they all require fighting at least one cruiser with heavy missiles and i cant win.
I have about 1 million isk worth of skills purchased and sitting in my hanger that I cant even train to level 1 because i dont have the prerequisites...
it's nearly 8 days just to get frigate IV so i can maybe train the cruiser skill i bought.... learning skills are at II/III/IV with a couple of weeks minimun left there.... then theres navigation/AB to just start training whatever skill for MWD.... missiles.... etc etc etc
atm i'm just logging in to change skill training and spam the help channel... should i just go and play something else for a month or what?
it's either too easy to get money at the start, or too slow to train the skills (so that theres a purpose to making the money). Tristans, light missiles and 150 rails dont cost much u know.
Maybe i should go on some suicide trips into 0.0?
Can someone suggest something for me to do for the next month?

get saving for your crusier, there not cheap. Well they are compared to a BS but hey. You can either mine or go fight rats (NPC spawns) in safe space, should keep you busy and let you get some combat practice in.

I'm sure some middle of the road ones will let a noob join, keep looking, but don't expect to ever be alowed back into the good graces of society once you walk that path.

lol mr. kitty...you have SUCH a long road ahead. but we all had to walk that road and only some of us got to exploit the jump gate big :/
implants and learning skills. you know how long it took me to get over 8m points...believe me you are at the beginning of a long ass journey

What you should do, and what I did, was:
Get into a cruiser as soon as possible.
Then I trained all my other skills up, like engineering, gunnery, navigation, etc. I had fun in my Thorax, even though I had **** skills, but then I trained them up, got good, and made money and had fun.

Not to be rude but with this game you really need to be able to think out-side the box as it were. If you can't do that use your imagination on what you want to do then things are going to look bleek.
There is so much to do in eve and it does not all require skills(mainly) but it does require time and an intrest think about somthing you would like to do and go do it. Be it kill somone(player) or find the sites not just the ones listed on the maps. kill npcs join a corp look at starting your own one.... these are just a few and they are thinking inside the box..
alot of the times you will have to make your own entertainment but that does not make it boring have fun and try somthing new till you get your feet setled.

I know there are Solo players out there, but in my view you get the most out of eve from player interaction, whether it be thru PvP, Markets, Group mining etc.. Join a corp, get to know peeps, and then ou'll find more varying things to do. As you say, it's a bit pointless otherwise, if all you are doing and aiming for is to earn money to buy bigger ships to kill bigger NPCs. There is little long term fun in that if that's all you are doing. THere is loads of stuff out there in Eve to discover and partake in.

We have a guy in our corp who we set on the hallowed path of agent missions.
Within 10 days of joining EVE he has already gained the standings to run a level 3 agent (although he hasn't started running for him yet as he is still in a frig).
He already has earned own enough cash to purchase a cruiser off the market and is training MWD and Cruiser skills atm.
As soon as he finished the basic flight skills we have a special 'military' skills set/guide set for him which will, within a relatively short period of time, make him an effective member of the PIE fleet.
After he is finished these basics he is free to follow whatever career path he should wish to take.
I am proud of my young Padawan!

meowcat,
put your money and your indy to work. there are a couple fairly large buy orders for tritanium (10 mil at 1.75 isk each) and pyerite (5 mil at 5 isk each) up in the Obe system. You can find these minerals at a lower price elsewhere, I've seen it myself, just too lazy to go fetch them. Buy them up and go sell them for the higher price, those buy orders aren't going anywhere too fast.
There's also good trading to be done in other commodities, although your best bet is in minerals!

Impossible. Either you have gimped your perception (like me, hehe) or you're lying.
I'll assume the former.
What you should do to speed up training is buy the Learning skills. Train those up to lvl 4 (do the memory and intelligence ones first, then the Perc and will). If I'm guessing correctly (perc 4) that should just about cut that trainingtime to one third of what it would normally take you.
No, It won't cost you weeks to do this, 1.5 days/per skill (from 3 to 4), tops.
8 days 0_o

EDIT: tried to check eve-db.com on learning skill but getting a server not found message just now

I went from Space Invaders to Evolution, I say I went from bad to goood
So it's possible to return to a life without crime when you had one with some criminal behaviour
This is not a hijack

Learning skill is a 2% reduction in skill learning time.
I'm in the same position as the original poster, just about to finish trial and start paying. But I've still got plenty to do - by the sounds of it I haven't been playing quite as intensely, so I've still got plenty of mining and agent missions ahead of me. I'm also going into scientific research, so I need to run some agent missions for the relevant corporation to get my standing up for the research agent. And I'll be looking to join a corporation, which will probably lead to more things to do in itself. Plus I want to explore more in general, still finding my way around the systems.
Incidentally, it'll take me just over 3 days to get Frigate IV, not 8, and my perception sucks.

Meowcat, read this thread. That will tell you how to kill the level 2 cruiser missions.
You should also keep making money. You need at least 3.5 mil for a cruiser and then another million to outfit it properly.

Sounds like borked up low perception. Had same problem when I first started, but caught it on day 4 or so. Cha was 13 or so, perception was 5. Couple options you have here.
1. Say, "Hey, 2 weeks in is nothing long term" and keep the char as a ault and make a new one with balanced stats based on whether you want more combat or more cerebral.
2. Train up spatial awareness to lvl 4, maybe even 5 asap, since by your low perception, you gotta have int or mem high I would think. Plus save, save, save for a cruiser it will help income a lot.

Roleplaying? (Sounds more exciting than cruisers to me :-) )
Or just start trading and see how quick you can break 100M.
We seek the Chosen ones / Roleplaying in Eve / Idea Lab favourites

Meowcat I am the new player that Hardin posted about. I too have been in the game for about 2 weeks now.
Quote: Can someone suggest something for me to do for the next month?
Get yourself into a player run corp. I did and it was the best move I could have made. I am an agent runner and in the past two weeks I have made a lot of ISK through doing lots of missions, last night ( probably through extreme luck ) I got my first implant!
EvE is a daunting place when new. All I can say is stick with it! The fun is there to be had.
Hope to see you in space!
